He has like five residences around L.A. and one of them is just two blocks from me in the old Metropolitan Water Building which was renovated for historic apartments a few years ago. He resides in William Mulholland's (think the movie "Chinatown") old penthouse. Once a friend at work and I actually saw him from our office window racing around in a white bathrobe getting ready for the Oscars the year he won for "Leaving Las Vegas". We checked out the building when I was first thinking about moving to downtown. I'm emerging for a second to hip everyone to two new Joni jazz covers, some of the best I've ever heard. Apologies if someone has already mentioned them. Pianist Fred Hersch, one of the true current greats, plays "My Old Man" on his recent solo album Let Yourself Go. It's brilliant and delicious, as is the whole album. His take on Joni's tune pays heed to both the lyricism and angular chromaticism of her melodic and harmonic genius. His choice of the tune is made even more delicious because he is openly gay ... "we don't need no piece of paper from city hall keeping us tied and true, my old man ..." Organist/pianist Larry Goldings covers "Woodstock" on his recent album, the title of which I don't know. He casts the tune in a setting reminiscent of Miles Davis seminal In A Silent Way period: organ, guitar, bass and drums ... spooky, spacy, and sensuous. Goldings cops Joni's vocal phrasing nuances better than anyone I've ever heard, down to the detail of the lyrics on subsequent verses. It's stellar. This has been trying six months for me, and you thoughts and prayers have been very much appreciative. As many of you know six months ago one of the students I worked with in camp had been shot six times in the leg at Columbine. He has proceeded to be a huge encouragement in the lives of others he has come in contact with but will be dealing with this tradgedy for many years to come. His best friend was murdered right at his side. Three months ago a friend was driving back from New Mexico with a bus from a retreat. A car crossed over the centerline and hit the bus killing 6 of his students. One of my students brothers committed sucide two months ago. Last Sunday night I was in a church building with some 150 students for a See You at the Pole rally. the kids were ready to pray for their schools and their teachers this Wednesday. I woke up and ran my boys each to their perspective schools to participate and then proceeded to the new High school and took pictures for some of my students who were involved at the new campus. We talked that night about the turnout, 1st Amendment rights, stories of Soviet students who spoke out about their Christianity and were beaten, taken away from their parents and imprisoned in camps. The feeling was one of great joy, until I returned home only to find out what was happening only 150 miles away. Ministry is sometimes tough, I think of a family where their Mother was murdered and how the boys were so hard to talk to and so unwilling to trust someone. Of numerous students whose parents walked out of their lives, only to leave them feeling unwanted and unloved. But, I also aware that their is much joy that goes with this job. A family of five with no father living on $5000 a year. The oldest daughter is teaching 6th graders, the next is working for Disney in the student success program for underprivledge students, and the two youngest brothers are currently attending UCLA and Cal State Long Beach. All raised by a latino Mother who owns a Pinata shop. Mom graduated with her AA degree a year ago at the age of 50. There are many of these like the girl who spent the last year in China teaching english as a second language. Or three of my girls who spent a month of their summer working in a Romanian Orphanage. Through all this God is faithful. But it is also a blessing to have people like you who share words of encouragement. Peace to you good friends, may God bless you as you have all blessed me.
