As one of the list’s ‘senior citizens’, I remember bread and milk being delivered by horse (pony) and cart in North Sydney where I lived as a kid in the 1950s. My brother and I used to collect all the ‘pony poo’ and give it to a lovely old lady who’d taken it upon herself to beautify a small piece of public parkland with flower gardens. Sometimes the horses also 'dropped' a shoe, which we would also collect. I still have two pony shoes that my Dad mounted on a decorated piece of board and inscribed with the names of famous Australian racehorses. We also had to help Mum with the weekly wash - in a tub with 'blue' and a big wooden stick to move the clothes around and a wringer to squeeze the water out before hanging on the clothesline. Boy, times have changed! Just a couple of nice memories triggered by the discussion! John (in Sydney). PS. My thoughts are with all those threatened by the hurricane. Well, it's comforting to know that I'm not the only one on here sweating it out here in Florida! Somebody (I think his name was Jerry) posted something about St. Petersburg and I wondered if he meant in FL ... am I right? I live on a barrier island right off of Florida on the Gulf Coast side (thank God!) and we're not expecting too much from Floyd. Just a lot of wind and some rain. It's closing in on 3 am early Wednesday morning and its looking pretty good for most of Florida ... keep your fingers crossed, okay? It's pretty scary stuff when you see the size of this storm and if it had hit just right, it could have practically eaten up the whole state of Florida! I hate this part of living here in paradise. It takes a lot of the appeal away and just chucks it out to sea. Still beats living in the cold, though :~) On another topic, I was glad for Bob's and others comments standing up for the 50+ year old women. I thought it was pretty ironic since Joni's in her 50s and looking great! Let's not forget Tina Turner, Stevie Nicks, Diane Sawyer, Debbie Harry from Blondie, Bonnie Raitt and the list goes on and on. I'm a big believer in the concept of "if you think you're old, you'll be old!" Let's face it, we will all be "old" one day so why rush it. The reality is that we have more knowledge and technology today than we ever did and people are starting to live much longer lives than they used to. Unfortunately, we live in an extremely age oriented society and we get caught up in worrying about what other people think and believing that we're old because of someone elses's perception instead of our own. Boy, did I go off on a tangent ... you must have struck a chord in me! Obviously, I feel pretty strongly about that one because it was and still is a fear of mine. I'm 40 years old and after years of working in the music business watching everybody else do what I wanted too be doing, I'm just starting to follow my heart and pursue a career in music. It's pretty scary because the music biz is definately caught up in age stuff unless you're already established and even then, the media will probably call you names like the "dinosaurs of rock", etc. Most people don't believe me when I tell them I'm 40 because I look more like I'm somewhere around 30ish and I really feel more like that age than whatever 40 is supposed to feel like ... you see age really is just a number and we put WAY too much weight into it! Enough babbling ... I'm going to get off my soap box now :~) and hit the hay! I hope everybody else here in FL - Jerry, Pearl, Paul, Bev and all - are doing okay and that Floyd and Gert stay as far away as possible. My memory may not be too good here, but I think it was David Crosby who talked about this in his autobiography. He said the difference between the two was that Jimi Hendrix was so stoned (on whatever) that he didn't even know what planet he was on, let alone which festival - which begs the question, how on Earth did he manage to perform at all! I've got the video of this festival, and he is still amazing! But the funniest thing I've ever seen was during a Rock Awards show a few years ago. I can't remember which one, but it wasn't the Grammy's. It might have been something like a "People's Choice" awards show, or something. I'll also preface this by saying that I DON'T like Nirvana, which is possibly why I found this funnier than other's would! Anyway, this was right at the start of their popularity - I don't even think their first album had been released in NZ at that time. They were playing some song, and the crowd were treating the place like a huge mosh pit - the bouncers/security were rushing around trying to get everyone off stage. Near the end of the song, the bass player threw his guitar into the air (about 20 feet), caught it and kept playing. He did this a couple of times, to huge applause, but unfortunately he got a little carried away. He threw the guitar up, failed to get a hand to it on the way down, it smacked him on the head, and he was out cold. I know it's not polite to laugh at other people's misfortunes, but I nearly wet myself as they carried him off the stage! I mean, if you're going to have a "stage act" or gimmick, you should probably practice it a little first, to make sure it's not going to kill you! Penny, A while back this was brought up on the jmdl. Some people thought that Gwenyth Paltrow could play Joni...When Paltrow hosted SNL, she demonstrated she had a voice in a folk singer skit.....you never know---- a movie might one day be made. Is the "Little Green" story compelling enough to be more than 'made-for-tv' fair? If anything I can envision a motion picture capturing the times and intertwining the lives of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and David Crosby. The title could be "Helplessly Hoping" why that title? Because it could be the story that deals with their hardships and liabilities and how they pursued their brilliant careers in spite of them. Wouldn't the soundtrack be stupendous? If Oliver Stone could work "The Doors" into something respectable, certainly someone like Jim Jaramasch could do so and much more creatively... The actors would have to be bigger than life and at the same time good, if not the whole thing would be cheezzzy. I could see Sean Penn as Crosby, not so much the way he looks, but he could pull. Edward Norton could do it. Ethan Hawke or Johnny Depp as Young? -Julie, for all of you emailing me personally, I didn't give it that much thought about which actor I assigned to a Jonifest-er...instead I merely thought about the humor in choosing popular, bankable actors. For example, I know Ashara and there is no way that Madonna is like Ashara. But wouldn't you know that Madonna would fight for the part.... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 12:51:16 -0700 (PDT) From: zapuppy2@webtv.net (Penny) Subject: RE: rupaul?!?!?!?
