The thoughts I am left with are: 1) What an amazing, wonderful group of people that I am blessed to be a part of! 2) How very glad I am that all the times I thought I would un.sub.scribe from this list because of the time factor, I did not. 3) Every single person at this Jonifest was willing to pitch in, recycle, wash things that needed to be washed, schlep things that needed to be schlepped, set up things that needed to be set up, run for things that needed to be run for. In short, it was one of the most relaxing, calm weekends I've had in a long time. 4) The cat never got out! (As a matter of fact, we never even saw him the whole weekend!) 5) I'm STILL laughing hysterically at Evian's list of Top Ten lists of "Why I can't go to Jonifest '99 and Top 10 reasons why I wish I was there! 6) I am thinking of how much I am going to weigh after eating all the chocolate presents that arrived throughout the weekend. 7) I still can't believe you all sat in my family room watching home movie bungee jumping antics over and over again! I have many regrets about Jonifest '99. I regret that there is never enough time to connect in a deep way with every single lister there. I regret that you are all gone in what seems like a "flash." I regret that everyone that planned on coming wasn't able to make it because of unforeseen circumstances. I regret that we weren't able to have a videocam set up for the whole weekend, so that everyone could "be" here, without actually "being" here. And, I regret that the whole list couldn't be here with us at this "family reunion." I will not "officially" commit to a New England Labor Day Jonifest 2000, because..... well.... who knows what a year will bring? But.....you "might" want to save the Saturday of Labor Day weekend in the year 2000, "just in case." How could I "not" want to repeat this fabulous event and experience? I would also like to thank Brian for all of his "hearing" help and encouraging me to come in the first place. I do not like crowds and an extremely uncomfortable in large social gatherings because of my hearing loss. Brian reminded me to bring the listening device into the house when we arrived and I was glad that I did! His assistance with my listening is just one small tiny example of his many caring gestures. Bob NP: "Woodstock" live ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1999 23:21:21 -0400 From: "patrick leader" Subject: RE: Bette Midler (NJC) part one Bette Midler <> a capsule review of each disc as well as star ratings. i'll tackle this. joseph, i have all of her albums, but i really think it's difficult to understand the appeal of this artist without live performance, and i intend to include commentary on the video performances. i hope jerry notaro will add his thoughts... - --the divine miss m (1972) includes 'boogie woogie bugle boy', her first hit. also lots of covers of songs that had already been radio hits, like 'do you want to dance' (bette's version is slow and sweet), 'chapel of love', helen reddy's 'delta dawn' and the carpenters' 'superstar'. bette's version gets at the heart of 'superstar' and as far as i'm concerned her cover versions on this album are always better than the originals. the prize of the album, though, is probably 'hello, in there' a devastating john prine song that she has made her own and has continued singing for nearly 30 years. *** - --bette midler (1973) somewhat an attempt to repeat the success of the first album, it includes covers of current songs, some standards (bette's 'skylark' is my favorite version of the song), some hubba-hubba (her term for the double-entendre swing songs she was singing and recording). this album also includes trancendent versions of the brecht/weill 'surubaya johnny', dylan's 'i shall be released' and 'twisted' (a year before joni recorded it, and joni's version has never even held a candle to bette's) *** - --songs for the new depression (1976) this is really my favorite bette album of all time. it was produced by moogy klingman who was in the first lineup of todd rundgren's utopia. almost all of the musicians from that band are on the album, including klingman, ralph shuckett, john wilcox, and todd, who contributes magnificent backup vocals on a klingman composition 'let me just follow behind'. the trumpet solo is by randy brecker. the album also includes a duet with bob dylan on 'buckets of rain' and her first recording of the tom waits composition 'shiver me timbers'. bette has sung this wonderful song so well, so many times; it deserves to be as identified with bette as much as any 'billie' song is identified with billie. **** - --live at last (1977) this is basically a record of the 1976 home box office special. i'm not sure if this available on video; the album is absolutely a must- own. highlights include a version of neil young's 'birds', the 60s popsong 'up the ladder' as well as stunning renditions of songs i've already mentioned, especially 'shiver me timbers' and 'hello in there'. and oh, those sophie tucker jokes... patrick np - dianne reeves - bridges I am not >exactly a fan of Midler (I hate her "From a Distance, Wind Beneath My >Wings") but having listened to her FOR THE BOYS album, with mostly >jazz-inflected songs sung beautifully, I want to know more about her >outputs: past and present. Perhaps they're worried about a repeat of the infamous "Egg-incident" which happened a few years ago while the Queen was visiting New Zealand. A few local iwi (Maori) were a bit miffed at the government's attitude towards their land claims, and pelted the Queen with eggs - kind of a "drive-by yolking". Note: I don't want to get into a debate on Maori land claims, the monarchy, etc. so I express no opinion about this incident! >I do hope you're being PAID for not being at work, given that it's not your >choice. If not, then perhaps a letter to the president of the USA is in order! Not a bad idea, but unfortunately we were given the option of working at home, taking annual leave, or working out in one of the regional parks for the day, and since I have a huge amount of leave to use, and a burning desire to start my next DIY project (a wooden coffee table with built-in games chest) I decided to take leave! I just got home from Boston after the most wonderful weekend in memory! It has been great reading all the posts about it from Bob, Ashara, Julie, Mark, CatGirl, and I hope I haven't left anyone out !! It's hard to talk about such an experience when you're jet-lagged, so I'll post tomorrow. But I can't go to bed without thanking Ashara for her boundless generosity and hospitality, and her beautiful voice and inspiring singing. I will never forget our time together playing and singing show tunes - it was like finding the other glove, finally! It was entirely NJC, and boy, was it fun! Working with you and performing Two Grey Rooms together was a real treat for me, too. So this is a love letter to Ashara!! Thank you so much for everything!!!! More love letters tomorrow....
