Boy, you people know how to make a poor old Aussie feel isolated! A great time was obviously had by all. I’ll bet Ashara sleeps for a week – first Australia, then the jmdler bash!! There seems to be an incredible pool of performing talent among the jmdlers. Perhaps you could all take the show on the road – even support the lady herself – and don’t forget Australia when you make up your itinerary. And, I agree with Helen in Auckland about captioning the group photo. For example, I want to know what this bloke, Bob Muller, looks like – the one who writes all the parodies and has the amazing record collection. Every time I think I’ve got him pigeon-holed age-wise by the records he’s playing, he goes and puts one on that completely confounds me!! :~) I’m glad it was such a success and I can understand the deep sense of satisfaction that Les is feeling. It really is a great list - the best on the net without a doubt. I thought the girls were kind of passe by now though. If he's still listening to them at 14, then, you gotta worry. My kids seem to like Prozzak (or however they spell their name) who have a bunch of songs that all sound the same - well, 2 that I've heard too. One sounds like "Oh my bowl of sheray" and the other one sounds just like it but with different words. They also do one called "It sucks to be you" which is actually kind of funny - if highly disrespectful. It gives the kids the opportunity to say things like, "I'm a bastard, it's true. Yeah, it sucks to be you" to each other, then protest in all innocence that they were just singing a song. I just organized my CDs and my daughter (12 years old, the same one who asked me a few weeks ago, when hearing Joni in my Walkman, noticed that I had a lot of Joni Mitchell stuff and, apparently not realizing this was the same person who "sucked" a few weeks ago), said, "You must really like Joni Mitchell." I said that yes, I did, and refrained from using the opportunity to preach to her and to force her to listen. I'll save that for another time. Can anyone recommend a good starting point for a 12-year old who seems to listen to a lot of Hip-Hop/"dance" crap, I mean, uh, music? There's always Big Yellow Taxi of course which has seen various incarnations. I read recently that the Boom-Tang or Woo-Tang (or whatever) Boys, who actually sound more like A girl to me rather than a plurality of boy(s) (they have a song called "Squeeze Toy", if you've been unfortunate enough to hear it - the unfortunate thing is that, mindless drivel though it is, it's actually kind of catchy and you get sucked in without thinking about it), are planning to do versions of a number of all-time hits - one of which (they say) is Joni's Both Sides Now - well, of all the... They seem to be one of those groups)?) who specialize in taking other people's stuff and remixing it in that hip-hop style. Geez, hasn't that got tired yet? However, if it awakens a wee one to Joni's music, it can't be all bad, can it? cateri@hotmail.com ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1999 12:04:47 EDT From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni's paintings Hi Jenny, Jenny asks: Does anyone on the list actually OWN a Joni original painting? If a painting of hers were ever to be for sale, you better be prepared to pay quite a bit. I remember back in March or April, Wally B. had a silent auction on his website for a Joni original. It belonged to a friend of Joni's and he was auctioning it off through Wally's website. It was an 8 x 10 oil painting that was of a bowl of fruit. It wasn't even signed by Joni, and the highest bid was $5000. It may have gone to someone from the JMDL, but to my knowledge the owner wasn't disclosed. Joni inspires! Sue Thanks for sharing your wonderful painting Sue! It's lovely! To bad you couldn't make it over to Ashara's, painting in hand! Would have loved to have seen both you and your painting in person. Maybe since you're such a talented artist you'll consider Saskatoon 2000? All you can do is continue to play Joni and keep her exposed to it, and when she's ready for it, she'll pick up on it. I would imagine Court & Spark, FTR, and NRH would be the easiest on the ears...does she listen to cassettes? Make her a mix tape with Joni interspersed... OR, you could give her the Erykah Badu or P.M. Dawn, and when she tells you how cool they are, you can make a Joni connection! :~) Of course, it COULD turn out that Joni becomes to your daughter what WWII Marches were to you... Bob, trying not to scratch the Topsfield mosquito bites on his legs NP: Future Neighbors, "Mark My Words" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1999 18:23:28 EDT From: Ashara@aol.com Subject: Jonifest Part 1- Thank you's Once again, it is Monday of Labor Day weekend, I am left with an empty house, (well, "almost" empty, as the kids are back, and have reclaimed their rooms!) and I am full of emotion as I try to put my thoughts down in print. Even though I am a writer, and am used to writing even when I feel I can't, or when I feel that it is too difficult, this after-Labor-Day-Jonifest-post is always the hardest to write because of the emotions behind it. I have read the posts so far, and they have told the story of this year's Jonifest so beautifully, that I hope to not be redundant. Thank you all who have written so far for your kind words, your generous spirits, and your full hearts. For me, Jonifest started in April, when I began to entertain the idea of having another Labor Day bash. I was so looking forward to Colorado, that when that fell through, I couldn't imagine not getting together again with all the wonderful people I had met last year, and all the people that I had yet to meet. So, the first thing I did was to call everyone on the Jonifest committee, and ask them if they would be willing to do their part again in organizing the fest. To be honest, there is no way I could do this without the help of this UNBELIEVABLE group of people. Maggie: From the moment I first met you in Cambridge, and we connected, I felt like I had known you forever. Your ability to put on a feast for multitudes and have exactly what we need at every turn, will never cease to amaze me. I am so glad you have finally realized that I will always be the "Jewish Momma," and will always buy too much food, (God forbid, anyone should leave my house hungry!!!) And I am equally grateful that I have (FINALLY!) trusted you enough to have exactly what we need. You were my right hand woman through this entire Fest, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Chuck: What can I say? Your willingness to schlep equipment in gargantuan proportions to my house, set it up, and take it back home again is really beyond belief. There would not "be" a Jonifest without the music, and because of you, it could really happen. It was a real "happening," a real concert, a real "Bostonstock" because of you, and I am eternally grateful for all of your hard work. I will willingly and joyfully sing James Taylor, Joni, These Old Walls, and anything else you want to sing together for the rest of my days. Thank you! Heather: Your creative, artistic, beautiful-beyond-words nametags were one of the highlights for me. To have such a dazzling momento, not to mention appealing way of knowing each other's names was a wonderful gift to this Fest. Thank you! Katie: You are the Game Mistress, and creative genius! Thank you for making our "break between music" fun and full of giggles! I will cherish the Joni collage that you made. Thank you, and also thanks to your husband John for joining us and seeing in the flesh that we are not a bunch of maniacal ax-murderers! (Well....."most" of us aren't anyway!) To be continued...... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1999 18:30:58 EDT From: Ashara@aol.com Subject: Jonifest Part 2, The beginning The first to arrive on the scene was Marian from Austria, on Thursday evening. This was the one pick up from the airport that I did, and so out to Boston I went. (John van Tiel from Holland was supposed to arrive at the same time, but his plane was delayed 3 hours.) During our VERY leisurely drive back to my house (which, by the way, Mr. Bob Muller, is NOT a mansion), Marian mentioned that she needed to buy guitar strings. So, we took a side trip to The Guitar Center for a very quick run in for strings, and left several hours later with Marian carting a guitar case filled with her brand new guitar! I got very caught up with the whole process, and "almost" left there with a baby Taylor, but caught my wits just in time! Phew! Onward to Topsfield, where we spent a quiet rest of the evening with Marian serenading me into the night with her new guitar. Up early Friday morning, and on to the Sheraton where John was staying after finally arriving later on the evening before. John volunteered to make the Curried Peanut Soup that I had intended to make for lunch for the early Friday arrivals, and was I glad he did!!! That soup was DELICIOUS!!! By the time we sat down to eat, there were 8 of us, including Kakki from CA, Michael from New Orleans, Roberto from Canada, Les from CO, and Chuck, all the way from Boston! The rest of Friday was spent playing music, eating pizza, and greeting more early arrivals, including Bob Muller from SC, Bern from OH, Maggie from Boston, Pearl, and her husband Steve from FL, and Mark, my separated-at-birth twin from WA. After showing everyone which room they were staying in, explaining the "rules of the house," and singing along with everyone, I turned in to try (ha!) to get a bit of sleep before the big day. To be continued........ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1999 18:35:35 EDT From: Ashara@aol.com Subject: Jonifest Part 3- The beat goes on Saturday morning, and a few last minute things left to do- hang the JMDL sign, put out the lawn chairs, run for ice, etc. Everyone pitched in and helped, and everything was done in record time. Michael made sure to explain in detail to me, (the vegetarian), before he and his shrimpie helpers got started, that they were all about to take the heads and bodies off the poor defenseless shrimp. He also left 2 miniature fish at my kitchen sink to make sure he could REALLY gross me out! Speaking of kitchen sinks, mine was at this point now completely stopped up, and an emergency call to the plumber was made. One of my neighbors came to the rescue, however, and it was quickly working again. Even though there were close to 40 people here this weekend, with about 25 staying at the house, not once did I ever feel overwhelmed or stressed out with too much to do. Most of the rest of the crowd arriving before noon, and after a few sound checks, we finally got underway with a group rendition of Dreamland. I will never, ever forget Bob's "impression" of a kazoo (since I had forgotten to hand out the real kazoos ahead of time)! That has GOT to be one of the highlights of the party for me! :-) Not fifteen minutes into the party, someone said, "Uh, Ashara, there is a police officer coming around the back." I thought it was a joke, since it was 2:00 in the afternoon, on a Saturday of Labor Day weekend, and even though I know many of my neighbors think I am some kind of a nut, they are for the most part very benign, and most of them had been invited to join us. So, in my demure way, I go over to this cop who dares to intrude on our fun, and say, "Jerry, what the hell are you doing here?" He explained to me that one of my neighbors complained about the "terrible music that was coming from this house, how they couldn't even have a decent conversation on their porch because of the awful noise, and how they put up with it last year, and had no intention of putting up with it this year." Now, keep in mind that this is Joni's music, not Marilyn Manson or Korn, and the volume was not that high, AND......this couple are both music teachers! Jerry and I had a good laugh over all this, and after explaining to an indignant Catgirl that this was "Pleasantville," he went off on his merry way to tell the grumpy neighbors to stuff it. He did mention before he left that for NEXT YEAR, we should probably get a permit for the PA system! ;-) The rest of the afternoon was spent in bliss with incredible music, (God, I cannot believe the talent this group has!) getting to know everyone a little bit better, and eating fantastic food, including the gifts that people brought or sent to Jonifest for the revelers to indulge in. Lori Reason from France sent a HUGE box of chocolates filled with Kirsch, Marian brought another HUGE box of chocolates from Austria, John brought the best Gouda cheese I have ever eaten from Holland, as well as a box of hand made Belgium chocolates. I was wondering at that point whether this was a Jonifest, or a Chocolate Fest!!! Either way, I was in heaven because I was surrounded by the most wonderful people in the world. Speaking of wonderful people..... I have already sung the accolades of the Jonifest committee, (of course, tactfully leaving out the part about Maggie's intense hangover the next day which prevented her from going to Atty May's, or anywhere else for that matter, and never leaving her bed until Monday morning) but I must expand on my impressions of the other party goers as well......in Part 4, The People. To be continued........ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1999 18:41:00 EDT From: Ashara@aol.com Subject: Jonifest Part 4- The People (long) Les, without whom this list would not exist: You are a prince among princes. I have always admired your diplomacy, your gentle way of handling this awesome task that is the JMDL, and your generous heart. It was such a gift to meet you in person and be around your humble and loving spirit. Thank you for all you put into this list. Marian: Once again, I cannot believe how far you traveled for a weekend with this crazy bunch of JMDLers! I am in awe of your guitar playing, and feel so honored to have you play for me while I sang. Thank you for the Joni cookbook, all the chocolates, and for coming so far to grace us with your presence. MG: You have cracked me up since the very first post I ever read from you. We have so much in common, you and I, especially the single-parenting challenges that we both seem to face with good humor. You are as funny in person as you are in your e-mails, and my mouth was hurting from laughing so hard! Thank you for stepping in to continue the emcee duties after Bob had worn us out! Jody: Amazing that you came all this way to hobble about on crutches! You were a great sport to sleep on that couch, and you are as sweet in person as you are online. I LOVE my dolphin magnet, and can't wait to bring it up north so it will actually have a place to stick to! Thank you for coming, even though it must have been difficult with crutches. Wally K: Again, I am in awe at the distance you traveled to be at Jonifest! You have a gregarious energy that is infectious to all that are around you. I LOVED your acapella versions of Joni songs, and your beautiful, sweet, and generous nature. I will think of you every time I wear the beautiful necklace you gave me. Thank you. Patrick: Besides the Boston crowd and Kakki, you are the one lister I have met several times. Each time I meet you, I find you even more fascinating than the time before. You have so much knowledge and interesting things to talk about. I have such eclectic tastes, and you are the one person that can go from A to Z with me, and not miss a beat. I loved being able to talk about Charles Addams, Cooper Edens, dance, the voice, and The Songmaster all in one conversation! Thank you for the reconnection. Michael: Thank you for being such a wise-ass. It would have been very uncomfortable if there wasn't at least one wise-ass in the crowd! ;-) I still can't believe the amount of energy you have for an old man! (hee-hee!) I get tired even "thinking" about all you did here from Friday to Tuesday! Thank you for helping to set up the sound system, bringing the shrimp (and making "almost" everyone deliriously ecstatic with them), and for lugging all your wonderful instruments all the way from New Orleans. Catgirl: From the time you joined the list, I connected with you on many levels. I know we have many of the same philosophies on life, and I was so glad to have at least one other vegetarian in the crowd! Thank you for the wonderful salsa, your beautiful voice, your wonderful energy, and the willingness to help out with the Jonifest video. Mark: How incredible to finally meet my twin! You are exactly how I thought you would be in person! I'm so glad you finally saw the light and realized that you are really a Leo. I was so glad to be able to spend some time after everyone had left to connect with you. Thank you (and especially Travis for encouraging you to come) for changing your mind, and making it across the country to be here. Pearl and Steve: It was so great to see you again Pearl, and to finally meet Steve. I was so grateful that this year was so much calmer for me so I could really spend the time that I wasn't able to last year, to get to know you better. Steve, you were such a HUGE help with your willingness to do just about anything that needed to be done, and I thank you for that, and I appreciated it so much. The real gift that the two of you gave me (besides the beautiful dolphin bowl and CD rom, which I love) was having the honor of watching 2 people that have been married for 23 years still so much in love. It gave me hope for the future, and renewed faith in the power of love. Kakki: You are an amazing party animal, artist, and most of all, strong, intelligent woman. I admire your courage in forging ahead to new places with your adventurous spirit, and like Mr. Paz, your never-ending source of energy! Thank you for being as wonderful a guest as you are a hostess. Bern: You are one of the few people at the party that I didn't feel like I really "knew" ahead of time. Who was this person that was the first to sign up, the first to get all his "requirements" in, the first to make my organization of this Jonifest easier? I was so glad you came in on Friday, because it gave me a chance to answer that question. I found a very sweet soul, a very interesting conversationalist, a GREAT cook, and a guy with a great smile. Thank you for the walnut pie, the early bagel run, and a presence that added a great deal to this Jonifest. Roberto: Ever since I found out that you played the piano as well as you do, and that you loved show tunes, I have wanted to sing with you. To actually have the chance in my own home, with a newly tuned piano, was more than heaven for me. It has been my dream to have an accompanist play show tunes on, and on, and on so I could sing to my heart's delight. Thank you for your piano playing, your patience at my lame attempt at Two Grey Rooms, and the hand made chocolates. (Is anyone noticing a common thread, here?) Bryan and Cindy: It is always wonderful to see the two of you. I adore your renditions of Joni's songs, Bryan, and the way you make them your own. I know the two of you are getting married next year only a few short weeks after the "usual" time for Jonifest, but "IF" there is another next year, the New England Labor Day Jonifest just wouldn't be the same without you! (So...please consider changing the date of your wedding.) Thank you for your songs, especially "Momma!" I'm still rolling! Brian: I loved the way you were so caring of MG, and were her "ears" for the party. I noticed this caring chivalry throughout the party, and it really touched me. Thank you for sending the banner, going with MG for trash bags, and for respecting my wishes. ;-) John: Yet another amazement from me that someone would travel all the way from Holland for a weekend Fest! You are a very generous, talented man. I am so glad I had the chance to meet you and get to know you. The Gouda and hand made Belgium chocolates were beyond INCREDIBLE!! (My ex-husband loved the Holland cigars that I gave him as a thank you for using his very large cooler!) Thank you for all the wonderful gifts, but the greatest gift of all, was the beautiful ballad you sang that touched my soul. Ric: A beautiful, sweet soul. Thank you for making the effort to attend Jonifest during such a trying time in your life. The flowers are absolutely gorgeous, and will keep the memory of Jonifest blooming throughout the week. Laura, aka SQUOFT (She is queen of free things): It was so great to finally meet you in person! Thank you for helping with the balloons, taking care of our resident "hop along," the gift of your beautiful hostess basket, and the free goodies you brought for everyone! Terry: It took a year, but you finally made it! I LOVED hearing you play and sing! My only regret is that we never got a chance to really "yak it up." I thought your giveaways that you brought from Dr. Sigmondegreen were wonderful! Boy, you must really know this dude well to snarf up those priceless gifts! Thank you for the chance to meet Jerry, for making it so easy for me with the guitar return, and for making the effort to be here. Penny: I'm so glad you decided to come to Jonifest at the 11th hour! It was so great to meet you, and you are another person that I wish I had gotten to know a bit better. Thank you for being so prompt with all your "stuff" you sent once you made the decision to come, and for being so flexible about rides at Atty May's. Julie: It was great to reconnect with you, and you look simply "mahvelous" dahlink! What a tan! I feel that you are always very "present" during a conversation, and you give people the gift of being heard, which is rare in this fast-paced society that we live in. Thank you for being the caring soul that you are. Gina: I was so glad you could come, even though it looked very bleak that you would be able to. You were another lister that I wish I had more time to get to know. Thank you for picking up Penny at the airport, and driving up from the western part of the state to be here. Bob: You are every bit as I imagined you to be, except, for some reason, I wasn't prepared for the southern accent! (It's funny...you don't have an accent at all when I talk to you online!) Thank you for your "muscle" work, lugging things around, peeling shrimpies, and taking over the beginning emcee duties. You were WONDERFUL, and I even forgive you the "cherry" and "acid" jokes! ;-) Kenny: It was so great to see you again, this time on my own home turf. I have such wonderful memories of NYC, and I hope you took some great memories home from here with you. Thank you for making the effort, even though I know it was a real stretch to get here. I'm so glad you did. Anne: What a surprise to hear less than a week before the Fest that you lived so close to me! I was so glad you could make it, even though you had a sick cat at home. Thank you for your beautiful guitar playing and singing. I really enjoyed it, and have a special fondness for Joni's earlier work. Jeff: Even though you didn't have as far to travel as some, you get the prize for the bravest JMDLer to come to Jonifest! You contacted me just days before the Fest, not knowing anyone on the list, and bravely walked in to a group of people that already knew each other in one form or another. I applaud your bravery, and thank you for adding your wonderful presence to this gathering. I hope to see more of you on the list. Even though they will probably not read this, I must also say a thank you to my friends Eva, Amy, Mary and Leo, who love Joni and love "me" enough to stop in and be a part of a unique "clan" of JMDL festivities. And a special thanks to Sal who supported me throughout all the beforehand craziness, helped to video tape, ran the Sheraton shuttle, fed the dog, helped to clean up afterwards, and much, much more even though he isn't a "Joni fanatic."
