Three weeks ago I was offered a new position at work, one week after that I was layed off (after a 5-year career). "Only a river of changing faces looking for an ocean..." I always try to remind myself that with crisis comes opportunity. I showed my resume to a friend who's a professionall recruiter, aside from telling me that on average recruiters look at a resume for 37 seconds, she also advised that I remove the dates when I attended college so that I don't "date myself." OUCH "Sweet bird of time and change you must be laughing." On a positive note, my band recently made two live radio appearances and had a successful gig at a local club. Leave it to music to get us through these tough times. This week the old man and I will be attending concerts by Richard Thompson and a duo performance by Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. Next week it will be Geoff Muldaur (check out his CD, The Secret Handshake) and Ruth Brown accompanied by Jimmie Vaughn. I found out that a co-worker of mine from Memphis, used to offer in-home care to Furry Lewis. She's got a great Joni story (she and her 8 year old daughter met Joni) and I've been encouraging her to send me an email to forward to this list. Happy Trails to Ashara and Party! I hope your new job is great and that you prove your old boss wrong, he sounds miserable anyway. Joni can get me through anything, even if its just getting me to work through the pain. By eight grade he was exploring his musical potential in ramshackle bands and writing songs that displayed a maturity beyond his years. At the young age of 19, Michael landed a recording contract and produced his critically acclaimed debut album, "620 W. Surf", on Giant Records in 1991. Two years later, Michael provided a worthy sucessor with his passionate and deeply spiritual follow-up, "Gethsemane", which was produced by Don Dixon. With "Michael McDermott", the 1996 release on which he played every instrument, he once again gained critical recognition - this time, not only for his lyrical talent, but also for his diverse musical ability. The new album, "Borboun Blue", recorded over several months in Chicago, finds McDermott reunited with his former band, and presenting his most diverse thought-provoking music to date. As is always the case with Michael's songs, the 11 tracks on the album explore the hopes, dreams, failures, and heroics of the complex characters he has created. I have wanted to share a painting I did while listening to Turbulent Indigo when it was first released. This beautiful sunflower field really couldn't be duplicated by paints but I gave it a shot! It's amazing how Joni has inspired us all in different ways. When I was in high school I would paint and do watercolors listening to her play......Joni makes me want to get back to my paints and guitar! Wish I could have been at the Jonifest '99 with you all...... I think the rest of us who couldn't make it were there in spirit. Sending my painting in hopes that you all will be inspired! Joni inspires! I am not exactly a fan of Midler (I hate her "From a Distance, Wind Beneath My Wings") but having listened to her FOR THE BOYS album, with mostly jazz-inflected songs sung beautifully, I want to know more about her outputs: past and present. I heard her past albums were kinda great. Isn't this the group who sang "Afternoon Delight"? I kinda liked that song especially when it was used as a closing credit to GOOD WILL HUNTING. And they won the Best New Artist in the Grammys, too. I wonder why winning the Best New Artist Award winners always have bad lucks: they either don't enter the winners' circle again after their breakthrough performance (Mariah Carey) or they are forgotten fast by ... music sluts (hehehe .. can't resist :)))). They produced great artists though like IMHO: Sade, Sheryl Crow, Sheena Easton, Tracy Chapman, Marc Cohn; but they also produced Milli Vanilli. Just wondering.
