Joni is Goddess..Alanis...not worthy to any stretch of the > imagination! > Well, Alanis isn't Joni by a long shot, but I really like her. I always say that if JLP was some indie release that no one heard of, there wouldn't be so much backlash, but rather "check out this cool singer, blah blah blah". I initially didn't like SFIJ when it was first released, and I still think a few tracks are laughable ("Unsent" makes me cringe with the line "whenever I think of the early 90's your face comes up with a vengeance") but it has really grown on me. I know we've beat this to death, but again, just because someone doesn't measure up to Joni standards, so what? I respect Alanis for not repeating JLP with the new album. Instead of continuing the "pissed off chick" theme, she actually grows on SFIJ. The thing I have a hard time with is Joni complimenting Janet Jackon with "Got til it's Gone". I love Janet, and love the song, and I think Joni is right in giving it a nod, but compare Janet and Alanis: Janet had DREAMSTREET, Alanis had those hideous Tiffany-like first two albums. Janet then bit back with CONTROL, Alanis with JLP. Janet "found" her sound with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Alanis with the help of Glen Ballard. However, Joni gives a nod to Janet, and chastises Alanis for not writing music or whatever. The thing is, imo, Alanis would fair much better without Ballard than Janet would without Jam and Lewis. Again, I love Janet, but I don't think she could change a light bulb without 4 years of someone telling her how to change it and what kind of bulb to use. So, in a nutshell, I think my rambling is trying to say that Alanis ain't all that bad, and I always snicker when Joni slags some singer or other, but I usually don't agree with her by a long shot. If I expected every singer to measure up to Joni standards, my music collection would be near bare, and a lot less fun. The singer, guitarist, and songwriter composed and performed hits like Big Yellow Taxi, Both Sides Now, and Help Me. In addition to her contributions to pop and folk music, she has also written and recorded jazz with Charlie Mingus. Today, her songs have emerged in the work of other recording artists, from a Janet Jackson remix to the nouveau folk celebrated at the Lilith Fair. Her own career continues to grow and expand with renewed interest in her music. Jerry Thanks for plugging my book, Jerry! We're hoping to get The Joni Mitchell Companion out in the stores by December. (Just to let you know: That little blurb from the catalog was NOT written by me, nor is it indicative of the tone or feel of the book.) John Melchert, whom I met on this site, was a big help in putting together this book, and Les Irvin was incredibly gracious with his time and in helping me with fact-finding. Wally Breese was helpful as well. You'll recognize many of the articles in the book from Les' site, and some from Wally's. Some were combed from libraries and files here in NY, and some were from Joel Bernstein, Joni's personal archivist and photographer (who has also been extremely generous with his time). Some Joni news- The Joni Mitchell Tribute Album is now finished and scheduled for release before the end of the year. Chaka Khan, Elvis Costello, Bjork, Etta James, Janet Jackson and others have recorded their favorite Joni songs for this long-overdue salute to one of the best songwriters of our generation. I should have a complete track-listing for you soon. Following her attendance in the audience at July 1st's "Joni's Jazz" concert in Central Park, Joni flew to the U.K. to record the orchestral tracks for her next album, tentatively entitled Both Sides Now. In addition to some of Joni's personal favorite standards, she's also re-recorded her own compositions "Both Sides Now" and "A Case Of You" for this new album. Last Monday (August 30), Joni began recording her vocal tracks in a studio in L.A., and if this process goes well, the new album may also be ready for release around the same time as the tribute album, but I wouldn't count on it- a date in February or March of 2000 seems more likely. Whenever this album of standards is released to the public, Joni has been invited to debut her album with a full orchestra at La Scala, the birthplace of opera, in Milan, Italy. I thought of you all on this list many times over this past week. So many of you have touched my heart over the months I've been subscribing and I thank you. Many of them have it, some have family members who have died... we sang songs together (they loved "Big Yellow Taxi") and we made some songs up. There were so many gifts to give and to receive... Many beautiful faces still in my mind... One of the best parts for me was sitting on the steps of a cabin in the woods each night with the full moon coming through the trees and the cicadas keeping *perfect* time with me learning "Hejira" on the guitar... Owning some 15 of her albums and collections, the best introductory album to her oeuvre IMHO would be the Verve Jazz Masters edition simply called "Nina Simone". While it is usually wise to steer away from "Best Of" sets, The Verve compliation contains very helpful liner notes as well as a great sampling of her songs, some written by her...such as Mississippi Goddam is uproariously potent and threatening or Love Me or Leave Me (not written by her, but deliciously updated by her) which is a magical blend of Bach and the small band sound...the album is positively bewitching, even though it does not contain a better version of "My baby Just Cares for Me" and lacks her anthemic "Young Gifted and Black".... Undoubtedly, Nina Simone stands as a tribute to empowerment, rage and musical brilliance- having left a wake of admirers and detractors....for example: her contraversial statement at her memorial concert, days after the murder of MLK Jr, where she hissed into the microphone "This ain't no time for non-violence honey!"
