If you're not familiar with Michelle I highly recommend you check her out. She has one of the most powerful voices I have ever heard but incredibly smooth and beautiful and seductive. You can't help but be drawn into her songs. The band she is currently performing with includes Michael Lorant and Sheila Doyle from Big Fish Ensemble. They played much of her new material on which she has gone to a more acoustic based sound though her performance was still very riveting and dynamic, switching back and forth between her acoustic and electric. She even got her mother on stage to accompany her and she was very impressive herself. Their encore was a cover of Peter Frampton's "Show Me the Way" with Sheila doing all the guitar leads on her electric violin that sounded so cool. Her previous release, Beneath the Devil Moon(Velvel Records), I also recommend. Ginsberg attempted to apply this technique to his writing and, while I have not really thought the whole comparison through, I think that JM is probably doing much the same thing in her song writing. The “eyeball kicks” she can achieve can be so vivid that, when they happen, they imprint not only the song’s moment on our memory but, as Marks says, “the moments in our own lives as we listen to her”. >> Yes! This is so cool! That's why I sometimes feel like a single line, whether it expresses the complete thought or not, suffices in creating that image, or "eyeball kick" that sets my mind reeling. It's almost a sort of high. Joni does this so potently for me. Though they're very different types of writers, Joni and the late poet Anne Sexton are the most powerful "eyeball kickers" I can think of personally. Thanks for this thread. This remarkable singer just released her brand new album : Kathi McDonald - Above & Beyond ( Merrimack Records ) Born in Anacortes, Washington, Kathi McDonald left her Catholic school girl persona behind and headed to the bay area in the late 60's to jump start her singing career. One night she was in the audience at an Ike & Tina Turner show in the Fillmore and began singing along on "River Deep Mountain High". Even without a microphone McDonald's voice caught Ike Turner's ear an overnight she beacme an Ikette. After more than three years with the Turner's she joined Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen's entourage. There she met Leon Russell and soon became part of his Shelter People. Gigs with Elton John, Freddie King, Rita Coolidge, Dave Mason and Nils Lofgren followed. In 1974 she made her debut album, "Insane Asylum", with help from The Pointer Sisters, Sly Stone, Ronnie Montrose, the Tower Of Power horn section, Pete Sears, Aynsley Dunbar, Papa John Creach, John Cippolina, Neal Schon, Nils Lofgren and a cast of thousands! In 1976 she began a very successful relationship with British blues rocker Long John Baldry and they have recorded and toured together for more than two decades. This month sees the release of her brand new album, "Above & Beyond". Many of the Northwest's most illustrious players join her on this great, new album. Guitarist Rich Dangel, who was with The Wailers, organists Norm Bellas and Ed Vance, internationally known harmonica player Lee Oskar and art-rock organist Brian Auger is also featured, along with his son, drummer Karma.
