The credits on >the album don't mention either of these instruments. Hi Brian, It's an electric piano, the Fender Rhodes. It was all the rage among keyboard players 20 to 25 years ago because of its unique sound and the playing action, which was similar to a "real" piano. It takes very little finger pressure to play an organ, whereas a piano requires a certain amount of finger strength. Kind of like the difference between and a manual and an electric typewriter. There is also a bit of "rebound" to a piano's keys which you don't really get with an organ. The Fender's keys were "touch sensitive" which was unusual at that time for an electronic keyboard. Previously, the volume of an electric keyboard (organ) was controlled by a foot pedal or a volume control knob. The Rhodes would play louder or softer depending upon how firmly one struck the keys. As I recall it came in both 66 and 73 key configurations ("real" pianos have 88 keys) and was offered as a standalone unit or as a piano and amplifer/speaker combo. "Fusion" artists in particular used it often, players like Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock to name just two. The mix of "Woodstock" from LOTC is kind of tricked up, IMO. The keyboard track wavers back and forth between the left and right channels and creates a unique tremolo effect. Joni's vocals are predominantly mixed to the right channel, as are the lower notes of the piano, the ones played by the *left* hand. The higher piano notes, the ones played by the *right* hand, are mostly mixed over to the left channel. It's a subtle bit of conflict which adds to the presentation. Although I only listed my top five artist, I would have put Michael Franks in my top 10. I've seen him perform 6 or 7 times as he has or had a house here in Ft.Myers/Sanibel Island. He used to do a lot of benefits here, and I finally got to meet him while he was getting his hair cut of all places. He didn't seem to mind and was very nice and he shook my hand. In his liner notes on "Blue Pacific" he even thanked my dentist. When I questioned my dentist about this mentioning, he said all he did was some dental work on Michael Franks. So have a great time as tour manager, and if you have any time to chat with Michael Franks please ask him if he still has a place in on the Florida gulf coast. What a great time! We met in front of the Town Hall, and went out for a morning coffee- John, his daughter Marika (sp?), Nicholas, Ange, myself, and my 3 Joni-hating boys. Of course, just like every JMDL meeting I've ever had, we quickly fell into an easy discussion, and were right at home with each other immediately. All of us had cameras, so out of the four of us, we should have at least one good picture to share! :-) I am always amazed at how small the world seems after these meetings. For me, there was not even one awkward moment, only a reunion of a portion of my JMDL "family." Thanks to all of you who made the trip into the city to meet up with me. I will never, ever forget it. Have I left anyone out that should be in? How do I rank these people who are ALL important to me? But, hey, what the heck! Here’s my non-Joni list of favourites (ranked in no particular order): Bob Dylan Neil Young Sandy Denny / Fairport Convention Steeleye Span Grateful Dead Leonard Cohen Nick Drake Robert Wyatt (Does anyone else on the list enjoy the eccentric, strangely moving music of this wonderful Englishman?) Gong Lindisfarne CS&N And, while I’m in the mood, here’s a very eclectic and idiosyncratic choice of Aussies that probably no-one on the list has ever heard of (though more information can be provided on request): Gary Shearston – a dominant figure in the Australian folk revival of the early 1960s; a fine interpreter of Australian ‘traditional’ music and IMO one of the best songwriters our country has produced; one of his songs, "Sometime Loving" was covered by Peter Paul & Mary. Mike Rudd – born NZ; a fine songwriter/guitarist and leader of Spectrum, one of Australia’s best ‘progressive’ rock bands of the 1970s. Still performs with his long-time associate, bassist Bill Putt. MacKenzie Theory – another ‘progressive’ rock band (wholly instrumental) of the 1970s; featured the soaring electric viola playing of Cleis Pearce. Pip Proud – a highly original singer-songwriter of the 1960s; few knew of him then and even fewer remember him now, though his two albums have been recently re-issued on CD by ‘Half-A-Cow’ records. Steve Kilbey – of The Church; his solo work is often ethereal, sometimes dark and obscure, but always interesting. The Necks – three accomplished jazz musicians (bass, piano and drums) who in this formation play hypnotic, minimalist music. Wow, I’m list inspired !! I think I’ll throw in a list of poets too: William Wordsworth – the King !! Gerard Manley Hopkins – poet and priest; the spiritual music of his poetry soars above the dogma of his church. William Everson – another poet/priest who worked “within the sacrament of Nature and the sacraments of the Church” producing poetry of great power and beauty. Gary Snyder – the high zen priest of Turtle Island! Denise Levertov – I’ve known the name for a long time but am only just discovering this wonderful poet. James K. Baxter (NZ) – a giant of NZ poetry. Sam Hunt (NZ) – a great performer of his own work; has been acclaimed a NZ ‘national treasure’. Brian Turner (NZ) – a poet of the Otago region where my father was born; my favourite NZ poet. Judith Wright (Aus) – the elder stateswoman of Australian poetry and perhaps our greatest living poet. Andrew Lansdown (Aus) – one of Australia’s finest ‘imagist’ poets. Michael Dransfield (Aus) – friend of Pip Proud and one of the great tragedies of Australian literature; died of a heroin overdose in 1973, aged 24. Deb Westbury (Aus) – a fine lyrical poet and a personal friend; she recently spent a short period teaching at Hartwick College, N.Y. If any other poetry-inclined listers would care to reciprocate with their own list, I’d love to see what others are reading. Yesterday morning three of us Sydney JMDLers (Ange, Nicholas & myself) had a long, enjoyable and relaxed morning tea with her and her three boys. It was a great pleasure to meet her – amazing how the Joni ‘common ground’ allows us to meet as if we were old friends! This is truly a world-wide ‘community’ with no ‘borderlines’. As well as talking about her trip and discussing various Joni related matters, we heard all about the plans for the forthcoming Joni-fest. All I can say is that those of you lucky enough to be going are in for a real treat (but I guess you know that already). I wish we weren’t so far away!!
