THere is enough there to keep you going for a month at least. Dave Matthews is not complete without Tim Renyolds. Together they are unbelievable. It is a very intimate album that is piercing. listening to it is an experience. also, get the santana album Supernatural. THis is a great album and it really shows santana's ability to mix it up with all generations. he does the one track Smooth with the guy from match box 20 and then he does one at the end of the cd with eric clapton. there are several spanish songs and the dave matthews track is great too. but i think dave matthews is a heavy heavy talent that still has not really been identified yet. on crowded streets he does a song Crush and it is pure jazz with really bright sounds. its like looking into a kaleidascope. kaliedascope? caliedescope? anyway, you get my point. i think he may be a genius that in time will become brilliant. a diamond in the rough. he's joni material. ss. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Aug 1999 10:07:54 EDT From: TerryM2442@aol.com Subject: Re: Top 5 Favorite Non-Joni Artists (NJC) Sting and Police Jonatha Brooke James Taylor Beatles Aretha/Squeeze/Little Richard/Rev. Her lyrics are pungent and her melodies reflective and memorable. Her new album, _Bitter_ is released next Tuesday and sounds like a surefire bet for Joni fans. Produced by Craig Street (of k.d. lang, Cassandra Wilson, and Holly Cole fame), it is more acoustic and organic than her past efforts, and the lyrics hold the immediacy and fragility of _Blue_. I am confident she will eventually also equal its eloquence. You can check out Me'Shell's work on the all-Me'Shell channel at http://www.spinner.com/ and she will also be performing on the Tonight Show next Wednesday. Madonna--though I must say to Evian that _Ray of Light_ and _Like a Prayer_ are fine, fine albums, but _Erotica_ is the true masterpiece. Easily one of the albums of the decade (did I just start another thread? Mary J. Blige--she may not have Whitney's technique, but she was born with the soul Ms. Houston had to rent for her last album. When it comes to female soul singers, there are Aretha, Chaka and Mary J. Everyone else is a pretender to a certain degree. Though her new album, _Mary_ underwhelms me somewhat, it is the production with which I find fault. Her singing continues to edge closer to genius (and I do not use that word lightly). The duet with 'Retha herself is nothing short of divine. Pet Shop Boys--dance music for smart people, they earned this spot with _Very_ alone. _Very_ to me is the gay _What's Going On_, an album whose intelligence and charisma is apparent to anyone, but whose poignance is special for the audience that created it. R.E.M.--Yeah, Michael Stipe is a babe, but their integrity, sense of adventure, and unrelenting melodies are the real reasons I love them. Prince/Artist--the pop Mozart, and he's still got it. The only difference between '90s Prince and '80s Prince is that the failed experiments are being released now, but if you have the fortitude to wade through it all, you will be rewarded. His chords and sense of storytelling show the Joni influence loud and clear. Patti Smith--if Joni is a poet rocker, Patti is a rocker poet. I love her combination of hippie idealism with punk take-no-shit, and she has evolved into an affecting and nuanced singer. k.d. lang--the only voice today that holds up technically *and* artistically with the Sinatras and Garlands of yesteryear. Her vocal fries (that fuzz at the end of a syllable) carry more meaning than a million hearts that will go on. And she can write, too. Likely to make their way onto this list after more releases: Rufus Wainwright Erykah Badu Lauryn Hill Belle and Sebastian Other artists whose work I love dearly: Aretha Franklin Chaka Khan Stevie Wonder Dolly Parton Portishead Bjork TLC And you know there may be more. - --Michael NP: En Vogue, "Hold On" - ----- Sent using MailStart.com ( http://MailStart.Com/welcome.html ) The FREE way to access your mailbox via any web browser, anywhere! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Aug 1999 10:58:15 EDT From: Siresorrow@aol.com Subject: Re: I submit the letter "V" (NJC) In a message dated 8/20/99 10:25:10 AM Eastern Daylight Time, CARTER.LOREN@epamail.epa.gov writes: << She is a "Vocalist" >> and... Beneath the Silver Moon by Victor Johnson (c) 1999 A sparrow flies across the sky, Just above the blue horizon. Floating over crystal clouds, Wings that bend so gracefully, So fragile as they fall into, The waiting August wind. Lonely mountain standing high, Suspended over evergreen. Feet fall on a crumpled path, Running over stony ground, Just to find that they can only, Stop and gaze so far. Just beyond the morning falls, The river of your dreams. Escaping from the day, These wild creatures run away. When the evening hides the sun, The water shines deep the moon, Birds sing sweet sonatas, While your heart strings play. Lost in the forest tangled trees, Stand so proud they keep you guessing. You walk towards strange fire calls, Your feet they stumble as they fall, Tripping over every little thought, That dances through your head. Still the memory burns so clear, Of your lips so soft and tender. Lighting candles in your eyes, Finding feet that only falter, So trepidly they step into, The threshold of your heart. Thank you for your indulgence. [i had always taken them for granted until you asked your question.] if a woman and a man are walking together, it is considered extremely rude of the man if he walks on the side farther from the curb. in general, one must offer the side farther from the curb to anyone older or higher in rank, so to speak. persons walking by themselves move along the middle of the sidewalk. on all occasions, people make an issue of NOT keeping pace with a stranger. if you are walking behind a person and there are few or no other people very near, it is unfriendly NOT to walk past the person in front. in stores where shopping carts are used, two shoppers approaching each other will automatically veer to their respective right to avoid collision. standing on the left side while using an escalator is frowned upon. and a little story: during the 70's, the city mayor -- appointed by the military junta -- decided to regulate walking on streets closed to car traffic. those "coming" would use the right side and those "going" the left. swear to god this is true. wally\k, neither coming nor going today ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Aug 1999 17:55:35 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Ashara - Coming into Los Angeleees (NJC) I want to wish all the Aussie JMDL'ers gathering with Ashara Saturday a great time. I saw her once do a show in an auditorium in Germantown during that time, where she came on stage pretty polluted. But that didn't seem to detract from her music, though. I even still have a vinyl copy of her 1970 lp 'Primordial Lovers', mostly because of my favorite song of hers from that era, 'Thunder in the Morning'. I listened to Joni's 'Woodstock' from LOTC today in work, and it struck me as being different from everything else Joni had done up to that point. Mind you, I'm not a musician in any way, but the main instrument in that original rendition of Woodstock seems to be an organ or electric piano. The credits on the album don't mention either of these instruments. But more importantly, the style of this unnamed instrument is strikingly similar to the music on Primordial Lovers. For those who will be there, I will bring the lp to Ashara's for closer examination by those who know their stuff (music-wise) OH MY GOD ! There really is a connection between Joni and Essra.
