Kate Bush --- I think I am the only person in the universe who thinks The Red Shoes is Kate's masterpiece, but whatever. Skinny Puppy -- IMO, SP were the godfathers of Industrial. Every time I listen to an album of theirs, I still get both the willies and the urge to dance. Cure -- Don't know what I woulda done with all that teenage angst without them. Prince -- I think I used to anticipate Prince's albums more than I did Joni's. Also, "Gett Off" has got to be one of the best singles of all time. James Taylor -- If I could actually carry a tune, this is who I would want to sound like... and damnit, JT always gets me all weepy - if he released an album of yodeling, I am sure something about it would make me all teary eyed, apart from the fact that it was yodeling (apologies to yodeling enthuiasts on the list) U2 -- When you release three consecutive brilliant studio albums like they did with War, The Unforgettable Fire, and The Joshua Tree, you can excuse a crappy album like Zooropa (crappy in my opinion, don't be flooding me with Zooropa emails, Zooropa fans) Carly Simon -- She's the stuff that dreams are made of... thank God she was one who was Touched By the Sun. Hole -- My fave band of the 90's, even though I ain't all that sure I would like to meet Courtney in a back alley at night. X -- Again, don't know what I woulda done with the teenage angst without them. Their classic line "My whole fucking life is a wreck" from "We're Desparate" seems to just sum up the drama of my teen years (Actually, looking back, they were pretty good years... ya don't know what you got til it's gone) Madonna -- I've loved Madonna faithfully since '83, and she keeps getting better and better, IMO. Didn't think she would ever top Like a Prayer, but Ray of Light knocked my socks off. Oops, I went over... can't limit to just 10. Evian np: Echo and the Bunnymen -- Song to Learn and Sing P.S. Jason Maloney, I love love love your picks!!!! I've been listening to Scritti Politti constantly this summer, and just last weekend I was trying to track down Prefab Sprout's "When Love Breaks Down"! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 23:15:19 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Birthday with The Nevilles (NJC) I've finally recovered enough to give my report of the fantastic concert last night ;-) Thanks to the magical mojo of our angel Mr. Paz, a friend and I got the first class ticket to see Little Feat and the Neville Brothers at House of Blues in Hollywood. Talk about being rocked with music! After settling in with my birthday martini, we were treated to two full hours of Little Feat (who seem to have like 20 band members) playing a little of everything from their inception to the present, all out and non-stop. They easily moved from Cajun to Southern rock to Funk to rocking blues and to their own blend of all of it. They were perfection. During the break before the Nevilles, I soaked in the heavily incensed atmosphere and sort of scouted around for several people Michael told me to say "hi" to but they had not arrived yet. About 11:00 p.m. I saw the longest stretch limo in existence pull up and figured it was almost show time. After much setting up of the stage (making it even more New Orleans than it already is ;-) the Nevilles and their band took the stage. I can't even begin to describe the experience - you have to be there - but they put on one of the most incredible shows I have ever witnesses. I could not have begun to keep a setlist because their performances were just like ever bigger waves coming at me and I was lost in it. They do everything in addition to their original songs - Beatles, Stones, Buddy Holly, Sly & the Family Stone, Ike & Tina Turner, Duke Ellington, Jimmy Cliff - all in their own Regga-Jazza-Rocka-Funka-fied style. Aaron sang the absolute best version of "If I Had a Hammer" that I've ever heard. He also did a gorgeous version of Van Morrison's "Crazy Love." But one of the best surprises was when they brought out "the grandsons"! At first I thought, geez how many more Nevilles are there?! About four young men came out and did their own Jazza-Regga-Rappa thing, in perfect, strong harmonies. I figured they were "Sons of Neville" until Aaron introduced them as his grandsons!! Various members of "the grandsons" showed up later in the show to add their thing, but the one who completely blew the House out was a very young one (never got his name but he looked no more than 10 years old) who came out and did about a 15 minute trumpet solo to Ellington's "Caravan". It was like some kind of apparition - he was way beyond prodigious. Then he did a dueling duo alternating with Charles Neville on sax, and we were goners from there. I saw something happen which I've never seen before at HOB - the entire crowd dancing everywhere, on the floor, on the steps, in the aisles, in the balcony - every single person was moving and grooving non-stop. And then the encore - they brought Little Feat back out (and then there were like 60 people on the stage, it seemed!) and all together did "Honky Tonk Woman" and about a 20 minute version of "Wang Dang Doodle." It was just amazing. We need them to come to L.A. more often! And if they are coming your way, you have just got to go see them - they are phenomenal. Thank you for setting this up for me, Michael, it was a birthday I'll never forget. And thank you to all for the very sweet birthday wishes! I LOVE you guys! Kakki, another year younger ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 23:31:34 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: top 10 non joni artists (NJC) Joseph named two very favorites on my "me, too" list: > Bobby Caldwell > Jimmy Webb plus Laura Nyro, Kenny Rankin, Sarah Vaughan, Bill Champlin, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, the Cure, the Byrds, CPR, Milton Nascimiento and, and, and there's too many more!
