Iam envious of the moment you had with Joni too and I definately would have felt the same way you did! I had just been at that concert and tried to meet Joni backstage(to no avial). You have no idea how much I wish I could have been standing there too!(I was just 10 miles away staying with my Mom!!) Like Ange said,I'm sure it was a magical moment and I know you'll treasure it for the rest of your life!!!! Even though I didn't get to meet Joni,at least I got her autograph!and gave her a birthday card.I had my Joni Complete Lyrics Book with me and managed to get the book backstage(I stuck the birthday card in front)When the book was returned to me(at the end of Dylans set)Joni had signed it and even drew a little smiley face complete with hair and the birthday card was gone! Miracles do happen, as my wife came out of lurk mode and joined me on this adventure in the French Quarter. We arrived about 3/4's of the way through Ana Egge's set. I enjoyed what I could hear of her, but the audience was quite rude and talked (loudly) throughout her set. Joan came on and the night was magical for me from then on. The set list consisted of: Always Down To Zero Sometimes I Don't Wanna Go Baby I Wrapped Around Her All The Way From America The Shouting Stage Promise Land Love and Affection Everyday Boy The Weakness In Me Something In The Air Cool Blue Kissin and A Huggin Me Myself I Drop The Pilot Willow (encore) I could have listened to her all night. The band I think are all new players with her. She announced that she is not promoting anything, but just dropped in to play a few songs. Highlights for me were Always (sung accapella before the band came on) Down To Zero, Love and Affection (I think one of everyones faves), The Shouting Stage (ironically that most of the people in the pit were hollering all night for one song or the other. Everytime she tried to talk to us, she was basically drowned out by the audience. Unfortunate, because one of the tunes she played about a man she new who died that she had strong feelings for, but I missed the story cause I could not hear.), Me Myself I, Drop The Pilot, and of course Willow (which the audience sang quite loudly. It is somewhat of a tradition when she plays here). All in all we enjoyed ourselves alot and she was in great form. I recommend you catch the tour if you get a chance. I got a setlist for a keepsake and one more great memory for my chest. We dove into the quarter for a night cap at an Irish pub where my friend Beth and Justin were playing. Unfortunate, because one of the tunes she played about > a man she new who died that she had strong feelings for, but I missed > the story cause I could not hear.), I saw Joan earlier this month and the story you mention sounds like the introduction to Everyday Boy, which is about a young man Joan said she met at a dinner party who was HIV positive. It sounded like she got to know him sufficiently at that party to have a very good impression of his courage and compassion in facing his condition and people's reactions to it. She described how this man's lover's mother despised him for putting her own son's life at risk and still he forgave her for her hatred and understood that her anger was part of her anguish at potentially losing her son. She concluded by stating that she later received word from friends that he had passed on. Lovely, sad song. The set list was identical to what she played here in Massachusetts. She's fabulous. A hugely talented, warm, intelligent and gracious stage presence. Interesting that at the show I attended there was some rudeness, though I would describe it more as over-exuberance and Joan pretty much squelched it early on and things improved greatly. Sounds like Michael's audience members were much more unruly. The audience was definately having a case of over-exuberance and the ovations were loud and long. Still I wish people would just behave when someone is playing or speaking in concert. I forgot to tell about something that happened during Willow. A girl at the foot of the stage, who had brought a present to Joan, was fiddling with it and it caught Joan's eye and made her crack up. After she stopped laughing she explained to us that she had noticed all these cups and bottles and stuff on the front of the stage and when she noticed the girl fooling with something, she thought she might have been mixing a drink or something. I don't remember the link, but I'm sure someone will pass it your way. It is an on line auction of VERY rare photos of Joni taken by one of our fellow JMDL'ers, although the opening bid starts at $100, I think. Anyway, that's what put me out of the running for one. (this is true of all of "hejira", a masterpiece that stuns and soothes and saddens each time i play it.) i've been thinking recently that "song for sharon" is to me a kind of complement piece to "the last time i saw richard"...if someone has already noted this before i joined the list, i apologize. i find one of joni's greatest sources of energy to be her ongoing struggle with the dual role of artist and lover...being a woman and an artist and the varying needs and urges of each seem to work as this incredible tension and poignancy in both of these two songs. in each, the narrator contrasts her need for solitude and anger and romance with her friends and lovers' very different, more comfortable lives. but i also hear a maturing, a kind of progression: from the sadness and disgust of her take on richard and his suburban anomie, his "lights on" and "coffee percolator" to a more pensive, complicated take on a childhood friend. sharon is not as easily dismissed...the narrator can so easily understand the joy and simplicity of "singing for friends and family" (indeed, we hear this also in "for free", a desire to sing more for "friends of mine" rather than "if you've got the money"), and yet is torn back to her wild hunger for aloneness, needing to fight out the dream's malfunction, and wander the streets with a diamond snake around her arm. ( a symbol and mark of danger, glamour, independence...the very opposite of sharon's farm and family) this struggle between the essential loneliness of an artist and the knowledge that love is always binding her romantic's heart to the hopes and fears of being with someone... i don't know, this has always been for me the essence and passion of joni's music...it's a struggle i know i partake in as well, and at some level i would guess we all do.... just some thoughts from a sleepless writer in the Big Apple... who has a weakness for ellipses.... - -- emily ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Aug 1999 19:15:13 -0700 From: Randy Remote Subject: Re: [Fwd: Re: long time, no see...] PJT wrote: > > Seth Garrison wrote: > > I can't for the life of me find any Joni > > > posters. > I was recently in SFrancisco and search myself for > some Joni Posters. I'm not real familiar with the lyrics of this song and when I read the quote above, my first thought was that it describes female vs. male resiliency but after reading the whole song, I think it's much more than that. "Love is precious You said it was precious love When first you felt my fire Before you dreamed flat tires..." He is disillusioned or worse still, fed up with the relationship. It has gone dead for him, he's dreaming flat tires. "A woman she bounce back easy but a man could break both his legs" He's saying "you'll get over it but I may be really damaged if I stay in this relationship". I'm not sure if he really feels he'll get hurt; if it's genuine or if he's just being defensive or making excuses to get out of the relationship. Then she says: "Do you tell me that to tease me Or just to hear me beg "Please don't go!" She's feeling like he's tormenting her (teasing), maybe testing her resolve. Later on the lyric reads: "Cause I know that you love me But what are you going to let love be Just a vague flirtation Or extra special company? This sounds like some indication to me that he may, in fact, be concerned about commitment; afraid to get hurt, to get too close, have both legs broken. Then again, there's the same flip side again: he may be concerned about commitment because he simply feels stifled (she obviously wants more) and he's using this comment as an excuse to get out. The next two lines seem kind of > non sequiter > (she sings) > Do you tell me that to tease me > Or just to hear me beg > (please don't go) Maybe the 'woman she bounce back easy' line was the man's excuse for not getting in too deep emotionally or for wanting out of the relationship.
