She does have an amazing way with words...it's lovely to read these lines and hear her beautiful voice sining along in my mind. Several of my friends are going thru tough relationship times and I've been so blessed to be able to share some joni with them thru these times...most of my friends cringe at the mention of her name - I'm very much the "joni-basher", and so I try to avoid talking about her so as not to turn them off...but recently i took a chance and quoted some joni to my friend Brad - he'd been seeing this girl "of his dreams" for quite awhile, it was a complex relationship, just when things were going well she'd freak out, he'd not understand why she was so confused all the time...but I could see that they were really good for each other...anyway, enuf rambling...he was really depressed, as she went overseas and recently sent him pretty much a 'break-up' email...both of them then emailed me about "why didn't we ever work out" "what's wrong with us".....and Hejira just hit me....Refuge Of The Roads... "He saw my complications and he mirrored me back simplified, and we laughed at how our perfection would always be denied" It was too relevant to be true....I emailed Brad the line, saying I think it explains his relationship with this girl, he really liked it and said it helped him understand. It was so good to be able to show Joni's brilliance and beauty to a close friend and have them "get it"...it's such an acheivement. There's a good joni song for very moment/situation...I'm just blessed that I could share it. Thanks for reading Ange Sydney ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Aug 1999 21:17:23 EDT From: CaTGirl627@aol.com Subject: Re: one liners, and sharing joni NJC In a message dated 8/9/1999 7:40:17 PM Eastern Daylight Time, ATAKATS@ninenet.com.au writes: << It was too relevant to be true....I emailed Brad the line, saying I think it explains his relationship with this girl, he really liked it and said it helped him understand. I had a great surprise Saturday night. Larry, who is a very gruff, macho construction worker, and a mutual macho friend came by (I was dragging them off to a concert) and they were looking over my apartment. Larry saw my TTT litho and enthusiastically exclaimed "JONI MITCHELL!" I did a stunned double take. He then proceeded to name off several Joni's albums and recited verbatim her famous Miles of Aisles admonition to the crowd about not asking Van Gogh to paint a Starry Night again. He proceeded to pick up one of my guitars and started talking about Joni's and also Hawaiian tunings. I casually mentioned a little about the list and the Jonifest parties and he wanted to see pictures and know all about it. I have known Larry for 35 years but I never really knew him at all. He is the very last person whom I ever thought would like Joni! I was thinking that for all the friends we may have who don't share our our regard for her, we might just have some friends out there who have kept it a secret all these years, too. He did say that he thought she'd be "real mean" in person and always struck him as someone who could tear your head off. I assured him that she is extremely sweet, warm and charming but (as I thought of the Indianapolis concert) did admit that she has her moments ;-) I have to throw in a few words over the fantastic concert we saw at the tiny, cottage-like La Ve Lee in Studio City. Singer-songwriter Michael Ruff was appearing with his childhood friend and stupendous guitarist, Jeff Pevar (the "P" in CPR). They were literally inches from us and backed up by the equally mindblowing Marco Medoza on bass, Joey Heredia on drums, and a woman named MaxAnn, who was a ringer in style and appearance to Sarah Vaughan. I'd heard of Ruff forever but did not know his stuff. He is an incredible composer and keyboardist and has played with John Lee Hooker and Bonnie Raitt and been musical director for Chaka Khan and Rickie Lee Jones among others. He is originally from Boston and Connecticut so you New Englanders probably know of him. I highly recommend seeing him if you get a chance. After the show I met Jeff Pevar and he completely bowled me over with his kindness and sincerity - about knocked me over by giving me a kiss, too! What a high - all I could repeat the rest of the weekend was "Now that was REAL music!" Celebrity sighting: O.J. prosecutor Marcia Clark sitting behind us looking dazzling and completely dazzled by the music. (I gave her a big thumbs up as we left ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Aug 1999 19:59:30 -0700 From: john noble Subject: joni one liners Hi! Tucker here. My favorite lines from Hejira. I have to admit, since I just now read the whole album it is LOADED WITH ONE LINERS! And their pills and powders to get them through this passion play I've spent my whole life in clouds at icy altitudes They chew the last few dollars off old Beale Streets carcass I gave him power over me So now I am returning to myself these things that you and I suppressed You sing for your friends and your family, I'll walk green pastures by and by We're always balancing the power and that can get to be a cold cold war A thunderhead of judgement was gathering in my gaze (one of my faves) Oops, I skipped Black Crow. Let's see, it would have to be Illumination, corruption and diving, diving, diving I'm really enjoying this train of thought! Envying all the Joni-festers! God! no pun intended! Peace, Tucker ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 11:08:00 +0800 (CST) From: Joseph Palis Subject: `Both Sides Now' Version A very popular Filipino singer Sharon Cuneta included BSN in her latest album. No embellishments or daring in her version (she might be too respectful as to alter anything). I kinda like singers who approach the song in a more instrospective way, the way Dianne Reeves did in her QUIET AFTER THE STORM album, which IMHO eclipsed Joni's version. Except for Joni, Dianne Reeves and Cassandra Wilson, all other versions of BSN make me cringe, including that of Frank Sinatra's. I was about to send an apology for having offended some of you with my caustic remarks about Judy Collins, particularly because of Don Rowe's chastisements. Then Don invites people to bash one of my own personal faves, Bernadette Peters ("fingernails down a chalkboard," indeed!). What a diversity of tastes exists right here on this list - and if that isn't worth celebrating, I don't know what is! So, I hereby apologize to all admirers of Judy Collins. I will learn to admire her as an individual, and if I am unable to overcome my dislike for her recordings, I promise to state my opinions more cordially. I bought his book NAKED after it got raves from my 92 year old penpal in NYC, and I thought I was going cough up a lung from laughter when I read it. I woke my wife up in bed one night and was trying to read her a portion of the essay when he is on the bus with the foul mouthed hillbilly girl, and I literally had to put the book down to try and catch my breath. Sadly, I have no real brush with fame... I went to school with Mike Modano, the hockey player, but big frigging deal.... I know about tom rush, but are there any others? _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web.
