If it was bended knees I would feel pretty positive it had to do with mystical as in prayer, or falling to your knees in a worshipful and/or amazed way.. I think even as it is that would be my best guess. Is she is trying to convey mystical without religious connotations? "Colorful" is not exactly spiritual, but it could be mystical as in beyond the ordinary and everyday. From: Howard Wright Date: Wed, 04 Aug 99 17:29:47 +0100 As Marian and Mark have already said, getting the right tuning is the hardest job when working out Joni's songs on the guitar. When you have the tuning, the chords are much easier to figure out as they tend to be (relatively) simple shapes. So how do you figure out the tunings? Probably everyone has their own way. The bottom line is, you sit with headphones on, CD remote control in hand, guitar in lap, playing the track over and over, detuning strings, strumming a little, listening again, retuning, breaking strings, cursing ... Do this for long enough, and you can either break a lot of strings, get very frustrated, or, sometimes, you get the eureka moment, and the tuning falls into place! Some songs and tunings are definitely easier than others. I think all the Joni transcribers would probably give Cotton Avenue full marks for being a ***** of a song to work out! Once you know some tunings, you can often recognise where they are used again. (e.g listen to coyote and DJRD side by side). To get the tuning, I try to distinguish between notes that are played on open strings, and those played as fretted notes. Not easy, but it can work. Harmonics are also useful clues. Usually (Sue, Mark and Marian, do you find this too?!?) the bottom two strings and the top two strings are the easiest to work out. It's those two in the middle that usually cause problems! I think working out Joni's songs on the guitar has been a roughly equal mix of frustration and joy for me. When you get it right, it's like discovering a new world. I don't remember exactly when it was, probably about 6 years ago, when I first worked out the Hejira tuning, and those beautiful opening chords started to tumble out effortlessly from under my fingers. Magical. Howard ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Aug 1999 14:47:27 -0400 From: Anne Rickaby Subject: RE: Joni tablatures and tunings - how do you do it? Usually, I listen for the lowest strings first. That gives me some clue as to whether it's a D-based, a C-based, or a G-based tuning. Then, yes it's possible to hear what strings are open (they 'ring' longer) but it's more difficult with Joni's stuff than some other players. Also, knowing (roughly) what chord shapes she prefers, I sometimes find the chord in 'standard' tuning (or some known open tuning) and then tune from there. Hope that helps. Finding the tuning hasn't been too difficult, since Wally's site lists many of them. And plus, help from the other transcribers have helped out a lot as well. Back to Eastern Rain, I was certain that the tuning was the same as the Dawntreader and The Way It Is, and I gave up on the song for many months, until I decided to try it again and found out the tuning was slightly different from what I had. Turbulent Indigo was (and is) a hard one to work on as well. Joni sure loves those 0CCCC0 shapes, and when you transcribe those it is hard to tell the difference between open strings and the 12th fret stuff. The machine is 10 years old, and the problem with it is the play and record buttons which are broken. You press 'em down and they don't stay down, the tape doesn't roll. Does anyone know if this is a simple problem to fix? What would I expect to pay to get it fixed and where? Could I do it myself? Unfortunately, the machine did not come with a manual. And can anyone reccommend what kind of mike I should buy for it? I plan to record my tunes in the bathroom which has got a little bit of reverb and the same mysterious quality that the Motown studios had. I would sure appreciate any advice! From: Chris Marshall Date: Fri, 6 Aug 1999 01:26:10 +0100 Someone mentioned the "time being right" to get into Joni's music in the "People who like Joni" thread. This hit me somewhat, given my own circumstances at the time of buying my first Joni album - Hejira. I won't go into gory details, save to say that I was busy falling in love for the first time, and while I bought Hejira because I wanted to hear what Jaco did on it, I ended up loving it for its lyrics that seemed so intimately tied up to what was happening to me at the time. (Oh yeah, that love was unrequited, so what I was actually doing was going gently nuts...) So: who else has fallen in love with someone while falling in love with Hejira? (See: "Two More Bottles of Wine" by Emmylou.) I had no job, was crashing with people I barely knew, was 3000 miles from home and friends and family. I walked into a record store and browsed the Joni and saw Miles of Aisles . I had no idea it existed until that moment, I was blown away - a live album! and I could not bear to live without it. Of course, I had no money to buy it. In my emotional state, but really being old enough to know better and having no excuse, I slipped it into my pocket and made for the door. I was busted! Was given community service hours to perform to pay my debt to society. Enjoyed the work I was doing (with a senior citizens food distribution group) so well I stayed on as a volunteer for many months. Oh yeah, I did find a job and bought a legitimate copy of MoA. And I've given up all my criminal ways and become an upstanding member of the community. Casey "It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters in the end."
