I consider most of her music, especially from the "Both Sides Now" period to be very much in the style of its time. Naive, a bit airy and too precious? Yes, and so was 99% of the folk music of the 60s especially for the sylvan-voiced sopranos, including our Joni for a time there. In Judy's defense, I also wonder how much real control she had over the material she chose and how it was produced - remember this was a female singer who started out in the early 60s when basically the record companies controlled every aspect of album production. I haven't read her book but have heard of her many personal life trials over the years and something in me always marveled that she could have gone through so much tragedy and hell and still keep her sweetness and ability to sing like an angel through it all. But it definitely applies here. >> The key to Joni's brilliance is her succinct simplicity, which is why it often takes multiple listenings to catch the depth of her lyrics. Jackson Browne, a decent lyricist himself though a rung below Joni, concludes "For A Dancer" with: "Somewhere between the time you arrive and the time you go may lie a reason you were alive, but you'll never know." A pretty good line in itself, but 22 words, twice as many as the Joni line from Hejira quoted at the top of this post. As a writer and editor, I marvel at her tight writing. The true seers of our times are the Mamas and the Papas. Long ago they predicted Joni Mitchell and LOTC when they sang, "young girls are coming to the canyon." They predicted global warming: "all the leaves are brown." They predicted the defeat of George Bush in 1992 ("gotta feeling that I'm wasting time on you") as well as Bill Clinton ("gotta feeling that you've been untrue.") This week Mark MacGuire hit his 500th and 501st home run and Tony Gwynn got his 3,000 hit (and hits 3,001, 3,002, and 3,003). (quote) Although Joni Mitchell is by no means the first songwriter to compose on the guitar using non-standard tunings, it can be reasonably claimed that she has explored the world of these tunings, and particularly that of non-standard/non-open tunings, to a greater depth then any composer that came *before* her. These explorations began in the mid 60s, when she first learned of, and started composing in, conventional open tunings such as open D [DADF#AD], E (same tuning-one whole step up[EBEG#BE], and G [DGDGBD] as well as some common alternate tunings, such as "D modal" [DADGBD]. While tuning her guitar from open tuning to another she came upon unlooked- intermediate chords whose tone-color immediately resonated with her. She thus began to compose in tunings that had never befor been explored befor; each one opening a new window upon guitar composition. Her use of these unique non-standard tunings became the most recognized trademark of her guitar style." end quote I rest my case and thank-you Joel! This intriguing hybrid has earned them top honors at the Kerrville New Folk, Wildflower and Napa Valley songwriting competitions as well as rave reviews for the new CD. "When I Go" is a cornucopia of songwriting delicacies. The album is filled with mystical, romantic, true fictions set amid vivid, wild Western landscapes. From the hilarious trucker's tall tale, "Little Liza Jane", to the exuberant folk-pop banjo classic, "The River Where She Sleeps", to the Faulknerian closing epic, "Elvis Presley", Carter delivers haunting, clear eyed ruminations on death, life, love and ruin as Grammer provides beautifully intoned violin and spine-chilling vocal harmonies. Carter comes from an old Texas family and a lineage that leads back to Commanche chief Quanah Parker. Once picked up hitchhiking by Merle Haggard, Carter's musical wanderings eventually brought him together with Grammer, who had given up music for nine years but was in the process of finding her way back. Their musical partnership has created quite a stir, helping them win a stunning array of songwriting competitions and a coveted showcase slot at the most recent National Folk Alliance Convention held in Albuquerque.
