It speaks a lot about his passion and the problems that led to his death, along with those of his buddy Abby Hoffman. They both "self-medicated," so to speak. His passion was evident in his topical songs sung at rallies and protests. He was at his best in these arenas. Dylan once said he wished he was living back in Woody's day, playing for free or for a cup of coffee. But I think it was Phil who lived it. There's really no sense comparing Phil to Joni, apples and oranges, but she would have been so HUGE had she been a bit more like Phil. IMHO. How do you describe her music? Do you just say that she's got this incredible passion in her voice? a combo of R and B and soul? or does her music defy categorization? Also, I think someone mentioned an older recording of her's, circa 93 or 94. What is the name of that cd? If anyone has it and is willing to do a tape trade, I have an almost complete collection of Bruce Cockburn and David Wilcox on cd. If you get the chance, run, don't walk, to buy tickets for her show. Several years ago, she did an acoustic tour. It was great, but nothing like this tour. She is with a full R & B/jazz band, which is absolutely stunning. (Unfortunately, she was surprised by the sudden ending of her set (Calgary has moronic decibel curfew bylaws) and left the stage without introducing the band, so I don't know their names.) They went from a spare folk sound ("Everyday Boy") to real, upbeat, swinging jazz ("Me, Myself, I") with some reggae and R & B in between. They performed after a set by the Violent Femmes. A lesson in contrasts and contradictions, it was funny how long it took the crowd to adjust from hearing mindles and cranky thudding and hammering to hearing music, talent and inspiration. After a couple songs, during which the crowd was basically numb, she even asked: "I'm interested (pause) do you like my music?" A big cheer was followed by the exit of a bunch of kids dressed like spice girls and a performance that won't be forgotten for a long time. She only played one song which I believe is new, because I didn't recognize it, so she doesn't seem to be getting ready for the release of a new recording. Who knows? If she releases something with this band, it'll be something else, believe me. (VLJC) I hope that any of you who made the trip to Yasgur's farm last year will consider going again this year on the 15th of August. I know, I know...Joni won't be there but some other great performers from the original festival will be there (Richie Havens, Lovin' Spoonful, Melanie...) and the true spirit of the original festival does indeed live on at this yearly event. It may seem that these performers are trying to recapture something dead and gone but from talking with some of these performers I don't see it that way at all. It is a beautiful show, far from the vapid, capitalistic, poor excuse of an anniversary that was Woodstock `99. BTW, I have some great pictures of the jmdlers that I took from the photo pit at last year's show. I would love to find out if any of you are in them. On the subject of The Shining, I too have read that 'review" from Stephen King himself but to be honest, every film made from one of his books that he was directly involved in has been REALLY CHEESY and the made for television crap is insulting. I have to say that making a Stephen King movie and putting it on television is ludicrous. His books are far too gruesome to make a fine made for television movie from them. Creepshow was great and that story about the monster under the crate that eats Adrienne Barbeau is really scary. I couldn't walk up my stairs for weeks. I ran! I thought the television version of the Shining that finally got the green light from Mr. King SUCKED! Like the guy from Wings was better than Nicholson!?!? NOT! I know that these are his stories and if they were mine I would want the cinematic presentation to include my intended vision but should anyone dare say that "IT" didn't suck compared to the book then they would be frightfully mistaken. I guess the point is that maybe King books don't always work on the screen, although I did think that Carrie, Christine, Salem's Lot and Needful Things were very good. I think Suzanne Vega deserves to be included. Now, where's Tiffany? I think she's alone now... Forgive me if they've been addressed prior. Any thoughts on what Joni might be referring to in "My Secret Place"? I somehow doubt it's a teepee on a sandy beach like in the video for the song. Is she talking about a geographic location such as NY, LA, Colorado, the mountains or the Sunshine Coast, perhaps? Accompaniment in activities that are usually enjoyed most in solitude, for Joni they could range from painting to traveling. Is she pointing to an emotional state or frame of mind she only allows certain people to visit with her? Or if you want to get silly, I suppose since the song is sung with, IMO, her most sensually breathy recorded voice and Joni's got such a great sense of humor, maybe she's referring to, a less than approved of by Myrtle, "spot". "Oh, Oh, My, My!" You don't think Joni would ever be so obvious as to name a song "My Secret Spot", now do you? ;-D Could each of the verses be making reference to different types of "secret places" we only go with a select few? The other question comes from The Tea Leaf Prophecy. "Sleep little darlin'! This is your happy home. Hiroshima cannot be pardoned! Don't have kids when you get grown Because this world is shattered. The wise are mourning-- The fools are joking Has Joni ever said that the reason she's an only child is because The Bomb was dropped less than two years after she was born? The Blair Witch Project refreshes one to the genre where what is not shown scares the living daylights out of people. It was an ultimate f*** you message for people who thought they can nicely put her in a shelf and claim that all her music are the same. In fact, the most beautiful songs IMHO are those that probed the politics of the heart. I'll defer the Tea-Leaf question to someone else, I never liked that song enough to take much of an interest in it...I DO know that the song is based on Myrtle's real-life experience of going to a fortune teller and poo-poo'ing what was predicted only to see it all come true. (VLJC) Creepshow was great and > that story about the monster under the crate that eats Adrienne Barbeau is > really scary. For some reason this really struck me as funny. The monster that ate Adrienne Barbeau! God what a mental image that conjurs up! I thought the > television version of the Shining that finally got the green light from Mr. > King SUCKED! Like the guy from Wings was better than Nicholson!?!? NOT! I I think I taped the TV movie but I've never watched it. (I actually have quite a few things I've taped from the boob tube that I've never watched - nuts, huh?) I didn't really buy that explanation of King's that somebody wrote about Nicholson being wrong for that part. As I recall the character had a history of alchololism and physical abusiveness. So the seeds of his crack up were there. The evil in the hotel was just a catalyst. I never got to see Kubrick's version in a theatre and I think most of his films have to be seen on a big screen to really get the most out of them. I read 'The Shining' one weekend during a blizzard back in Iowa. My roommate was gone for the weekend so I was all alone. It scared the crap out of me & I couldn't sleep until my roomie was home. I kept expecting the walls of the apartment to start melting or morphing into something else or some damn thang. Joni talks about this song in an interview of tape tree #3. She says (as Bob pointed out) that the part about the tea leaves and the prophecy coming true really did happen to her mother. She then goes on to say that her mother never actually stood over her cradle and said those lines about Hiroshima. She implied that this part of the song was invention. Blood and guts and graphic gore is not usually my cup of tea but I have to say that the first two Alien movies scared the holy merde out of moi! My personal favorite Joan Armatrading song would have to be "Show Some Emotion" from 1977, followed by (I Love it When You) Call Me Names from 1983. A 93-94 would in fact be very new in terms of Joan's work... I don't know about the rest of you here but I recall back in the 60s hearing constantly from my peers that they "never wanted to bring a child into this world" because of "The Bomb" and because "the world is so "f**ked up". It was a very common attitude, which I'm sure Joni also heard expressed very often back then. Putting it in the context of the time - the Cold War threat , the potential threat of losing loved ones in the unending drone of Vietnam, and the prevalent paranoia (perhaps rightly so at the time) and fear of a gazillion nukes pointed our way, and one can understand the attitude. Maybe Joni added this small fiction in the song to tie in and contrast the attitudes of the WWII generation of her/our parents with her/our own postwar generation. On another note - I love the coziness of these lyrics in the song: "The three of them laughin' 'round the radio" and "They sit up late and watch the Johnny Carson show" Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999 21:30:12 -0700 (PDT) From: zapuppy2@webtv.net (Penny) Subject: Re: Joan Armatrading (NJC) Brett wrote: If you get the chance, run, don't walk, to buy tickets for her show. I'm going to see her in about a week at MassMoca (Museum of Contemporary Art). I saw her last in 1981, I think it was. My second favorite Joan, she is! I couldn't agree with the accolades more! I saw (also my second favorite Joan, heck, my second favorite woman artist) Armatrading about fifteen years ago, that time backed by a full band too. The woman is fabulous! I'm green with envy of you both!
