My U.S. networks come from Detoit for some reason, and I tuned into the Detroit news the other day, and the weatherman for one station happens to be an amateur pilot, so he had a whole segment devoted to explaining all what could go wrong in flying, and how the whole thing could have been avoided, maybe. So, I may be totally wrong, but I think the point that Kerri is making is that it gets pretty surreal when you tune in to watch the frigging weather, and instead you have the weatherperson hypothesizing about his limited knowledge of aviation. Not to start a whole other thread about television, but we always seem to have a t.v. on in the house, and I for one DID feel forced in a way to have to hear about the whole tragedy every time I turned on the television, just because everywhere I looked, it was the NYC vigil, the search for the plane, the swarm of people outside the Kennedy Compound, etc. When the Simpsons gets prempted by a shot of Ted Kennedy driving in a van, it's surreal. Sure, we all have the option of turning everything off and not hearing about the Kennedy family, but I for one am mad that for those of us who don't see television as a pariah, we can't even watch the weather without having to have the Kennedy family somehow worked into the broadcast. I mean, leave it to CNN and be done with it. So, Ashara, new addition....(and Catgirl, Marian, Gina, Heather, and absolutely everyone else...if I forgot anyone, please forgive me, I've got a lot on my mind lately) Thanks for erverything. Really I mean that. Reading all of the words of encouragement from folks out there in the rest of the world, makes me happy to have found you all. But reading all of them starts me to crying. I start to dwell on the fact that I have something that will not go away. Then I start thinking of my wife and son, and ending up in a wheelchair, even though the doctor said that he doesn't think that's my situation/future. But idle minds have time to run around and think of all the bad things that can happen instead of thinking of all the good things (and folks here are definately one of the good things), so I just have to deal with it, get over it, fight the living shit out of it, beat it into submission, and don't let it consume my life. So that I will. I hope you have a great time down under, and with the house full of Joni-philes later this fall. Maybe next year (there's gonna be a next year, right?!?) This isn't a movie that pushes gore and special effects in your face. The sounds and camera angles, the fear projected by the actors, all of this was a catalyst to the viewer's imagination. It is what is unseen in the original film that is terrifying. I can't figure out why Hollywood would want to do a remake that would make everything obvious and overblown. As I recall, the book was also more about what the characters heard and felt than what they saw. Hill House itself is a character in the novel and its appearance and feel is unsettlingly by itself. Besides which, those who have an objective molecule of DNA among us would have to agree with those choices. Joni might win in the female songwriter category and would certainly do well in the all-around category, but purely from a singing standpoint, I'd have to go with Aretha or Barbra, too. Barbra (who I love) is not a rock and roller, although I have and enjoy her albums of those attempts. I would include Barbra at the top of any list of greatest singers, but would have to wonder if Barbra was a greater singer than Briget Nielsen, Kiri Ti Kawana, Jessye Norman, Beverly Sills, and other classical and opera singers of this century. So many genres of music... and so muc talent, we have been blessed. I saw the original "Haunting" in the theater when it was originally released and it was the very favorite movie of my childhood. I'm anxious to to see "Blair Witch" - tried last weekend but it was only playing in 3 theaters too far away. Several say it's the scariest movie ever made - oooo, I can't wait! My left breast decided to observe the anniversary of Woodstock by developing suspicious calcifications very near the site of my earlier brush with breast cancer (I had a lumpectomy followed by radiation four years ago). After a round of meetings with medical person (to the extent that's not an oxymoron :D) after medical person, I've decided to stage my own little celebration of peace, music and mastectomy, likely the second week of August. I'm not particularly pleased, but I'm determined to get through it and come out bitching and screaming . Deanna Ivy the Wonderkitty has been taking good care of me, bless her. As I wrote to a friend recently, I wish I had a teeny tiny scrub suit for Deanna so she could help out in surgery. Petting her is the best anesthesia I know! I'll be signing off the list shortly before heading for the horsepistol (a hospital stay frightens me lots more than breast cancer and surgery combined!), but both before and afterwards you're going to have to put up with me. I have hesitated on asking because I know that a lot of people do and I know that the tape trees are all closed but I am really itching to get some new and not easily obtained Joni stuff. In particular I am interested in the latest tape tree that has the concert from Ottawa...at least I think that I remember seeing that concert on there. As well, if there are any other tape trees that have really obscure or extremely great material on them I would be interested in those too. So if there is any great person out there that has the ability and the kind graces to help me out in my quest that would be great. I wish that I had something to offer other than blank tapes and return postage but alas I have not. If there is someone in Canada that can do this, it would be great. My funds are limited as a University student but if not, close by in the US would be cool. I'm in Montreal. Thank you in advance and I am sorry for bothering anyone with this post and this request. On a totally unrelated subject...how does a painting go missing? I was really upset to read on Wally's site that one of Joni's paintings has done just that and one of her cats, that seems like it could have been a very personal piece. I'm sure that as an artist, every work is personal but I know that Joni must care a lot for her cats as they pop up in her art again and again, especially on TTT. As an aside, I absolutely love the art in that album and the CD itself with that great cat painting. I don't know what they were thinking when they didn't nominate the album's art for a Grammy but who knows how they come up with their nominees (probably from a hat or something).
