I just wanted to pass on all my prayers and thoughts to Rickie Lee and his family, to John van Tiel and his wife and to all the others who have shared their pains and fears. Also special prayers for Wally and his continuing battle. I lost my favourite Aunty less than 2 months ago to breast cancer and it's been devastating... but more than anything, it has made me more aware of life and the joys still to be had. So, wishing you all every joy and happiness :-) Vanessa Thomson. P.S. I know it's (NJC), I just wasn't sure who's on what list so I've played it safe and sent to both. Sorry for the inconvenience. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 02:56:30 PDT From: "John Low" Subject: Re: Moon Songs (NJC) > > Mark in Seattle wrote: > > > > >From Lily Tomlin's routine 'Glenna, A Child of the Sixties' > > > > > >"They planted a flag and hit a golf ball. I've only read bits of it while hanging around in Tower Records but the book seems to me like a lazy cut and paste effort by a lonely hack. He dosen't seem to have talked to anyone. I'm sure someone like Peter Gabriel, for example, would have given him something quotable. I remember a fun little book about Dylan called Positively Main Street by Toby ? (I don't remember his surname). It was around the time that some nutcase used to search Dylan's garbage for clues about His Bobness. Anyway Toby drove out to Hibbing and managed to get interviews with family and old girlfriends about young Bob. It was original and fun to read. I have a copy of it. It is a brilliant piece of writing and a wonderful theatrical work. I had the good fortune of seeing it performed here in Seattle before it went to Broadway. The routine that contains the moon walk quote was from a different show, however. Glenna - A Child of the 60's was from 'Appearing Nitely' and also appeared on the record of exerpts from that show called 'Lily Tomlin - On Stage'. Some of the characters from 'Appearing Nitely' also show up in 'Search for Signs...etc'. I think Lily is a genius. In recent years she hasn't done much, however. Someone had asked about the new baby. The new grandchild is a girl, and her name is Daisy Joan, if memory serves. Also, I think Joni said that she was born on June 18. I will make no assumptions about the status of the relationship between Joni and Don, but they certainly looked "together" and were very openly affectionate. Myths to be dispelled: "Ice cream melting on a piece of pie" is not a sexual reference -- both Don and Joni had a good laugh over that one. Apparently, Don was either referring to a Norman Rockwell painting, or perhaps just making a Rockwell-like allusion (he said something to the effect of, "No, I was going for a Norman Rockwell kind of thing"). Also, "Boom-boom pachyderm" is not a sexual reference -- it refers to a loud drum fill played at a turn-around in a blues. So, "hangin' on your boom-boom pachyderm" means more like hanging on the groove, or feeling the groove -- not groping for private parts. ;-) I had a wonderful evening, to say the least. I am amazed that this happened. I remember last year when lots of people were meeting Joni on her tours with Bob Dylan and Dylan/Morrison, and I talked a bit on the list about how I was extremely happy for those who got to meet her, but that I didn't particularly want to meet her in that context (and was duly slammed by someone, who claimed that if I didn't want to meet Joni Mitchell, then I was either in "denial" or that I wasn't a "true fan" -- whatever the hell that means). My meaning was that I did not want to have a brief, hectic, adulatory interaction with her. I would want to have a real conversation. My ideal meeting with her would be over dinner, so that we could converse about many different topics, including exchanging musical ideas, etc. Well, that's exactly what happened! My stars must have been particularly well-aligned a few weeks ago... :-) So, it truly was a dream come true. And I even rode with her in her limo... what a hoot, huh? (from Wally's bio): When Refuge did [this show], Joni got some bad press for walking offstage five times during the show. Whether her frustration resulted from malfunctioning equipment, or from the audience being too noisy, in reality it was a combination of the show being a rare one for Joni in the daytime, the crowd's natural rowdiness adding distraction, and the disappointing fact that this concert was at the end of a long, grueling tour played in venues that were mostly only about 2/3 full. - -------- Know a date or month specific Joni tidbit?
