I think my favorite moon song is "Silver Moon" written by David Sylvian though the aforementioned "Standing on the Moon" is definately "up there" as well. I love writing about the moon. I once wrote a song about the moon when I looked up one night and the moon, she looked like a big smiley face... "Walking from the Bean, I turn around to see, There's the moon smiling down at me. She says not a word, For words escape her still, So she gives her smile so willingly. And isn't it strange, The moon would smile at me. Jose is a percussionist from Puerto Rico and he's never heard of nor heard the music of Joni Mitchell. As I just received the VHS copy of "Shadows & Light" I decided this was the perfect after dinner treat. To say that he was blown away is an understatement. Imagine the impact of Joni along with Jaco, Pat Methany, et al. I asked what this experience was like and he replied, "Captivating!" The next video scheduled is "Painting With Words & Music." In a box titled 'If You Like...' is this item: (If you like) Sarah McLachlan's 'Mirrorball', then reflect on Joni Mitchell's 'Shadows and Light' (Asylum, 1980), a shimmering live collection that captures Mitchell (and an all-star band) at a musical peak. John Hall's ( of Orleans fame and a great artist on his own ) company just released an interesting album : Jonell Mosser - So Like Joy ( Siren Songs ) The album features twelve new, original songs by Jonell + John and Johanna Hall. The backing is provided by John ( of course! ), Tony Levin, Rob Leon, Ken Blevins, Warren Bernhardt, Larry and Lance Hoppen and others. John Hall also produced the album, but what really stands out is Jonell's voice! Jonell has been a well kept secret in the U.S. music business for years, but this will have to change with this remarkable new album. She has sung in the studio with people like Etta James, Rodney Crowell, Patti Smyth, Vince Gill, Waylon Jennings and several others. She apperared on the soundtracks to "Hope Floats", "Boys On The Side" and "Look Who's Talking Now" and this is what Don Was said about her : "One of the greatest singers in the world, with a direct link from heart to larynx". Her first album was a tribute to the late Townes Van Zandt called "Around Townes" on the Winter Harvest label. The new album "So Like Joy" is beautifully written and brilliantly performed! Copies are available from : Siren Songs PO Box 912 Saugerties NY 12477 U.S.A. Website: http://www.sirensongs.com Email: mail@sirensongs.com Beautiful songs by a great voice! He was very precise about what happened and when and who. No guess work. I also knew someone once who was into numerology whcih i klnew nothing about. I gave him the house number of a home I once lived in. What he said about that house and the occurances in it, again specific was amazing. Having said that, I am not now particulalry interested in these things. I think they do have a place and it is good that their are people who use them well to help and inform. Unfortunately, the opposite is also true and much more prevelant. And of course there are those who think, thru fear and ignorance and lack of thinking ability, that it is 'of the devil'. My take is whatever gets you on the path to self understanding and self realisation is ultimately a good thing. Recently there was a long 'Everyman' documentary on Stanstead Hall owned by the Spiritualists National Union. It is also known as The Arthur Findley College. As a documentary series Everyman has a good reputation. However, it let itself down with this one. it fell in the same old same old. First they called the program Spooks Hall. The titles and music were stupid and eerie(or supposed to be). And they did what evry other doc maker has done when dealing with this subject-left all the good stuff out! They show edited demonstrations of mediumship. They edit out all that which would stand alone as unexplainable except by mediumship. In other words, they edit out the information given, real info like cause of death, full names, careers, addresses, persoanl remembrances etc. The edited version sounds pathetic and meaningless and makes the whole thing look stupid and the congreatgations as gullible fools. yet these services take place evryday all over the world. Not all are good. there are a lot of people out there who do not do a good dem and should not be doing it. However, ther are real gems, genuine people, with real genuine gifts, who give real evidence that could not have been gotten by any other means. However, it would not suit the establishment nor the 'Church' for people to know this. As with all things, one should investigate things for oneself, take nothing one reads as truth but only what one can gain from one's own experience. Oh and lest one should think otherwise, i state again that i do not have any religion at all. i follow no-ones path but my own. I am not a Xtian, nor a Spiritualist nor a Jew nor a Muslim etc etc IMO none of these labels would make me right or any closer to Truth or to God. They might help me feel secure though and have someone to hang the responsibilty for myself onto. What i believe I believe, right or wrong, because it makes sense to me-not because I read it a 'holy book' or because I was told it by a 'holy person' and least of all because I am afraid if I don't believe that i will be damned. the latter is the most despicable reason for belief. I have found I must live according to my own conscience and not anyone elses. If i say I believe something, I will try and give the reasons fro my belief and say to you that i believe this because 'the book' says so. That is not a reason. It's a cop out. Of my beliefs the only one I feel certain about is that we all, each and evryone of us, will survive physical 'death'. this will not depend upon what we believed or how we behaved. survival will not be restricted to a special few. i do believe that our experiences after the transition will depend very much upon out state of mind. As in physiacl life, where heaven and hell are states of mind, i think it will be so 'over there' too. BUT I do not think that anyone, ever, for any reason, is denied the opportunity to change. so no matter how henious we may have been, or are at the time of death, we will never be condemned to darkness except by OURSELVES. So rising out of this will also be at our decison and no -one elses. As for punishment etc-I don't believe there is any. at least not in the form of some Big daddy punishing us for our sins! I cannot prove this, and this is only my idea, but i think that we each will feel whatever it is we made another person feel, be it good or bad. To me this is justice. I have given much thought to the subject of justice. i have heard many people say either to me personally, or thru tv etc, that the perps of the sort of crime i was a victim of as a child, should be killed, or locked up with the key thrown away, should be castrated, or should burn in eternal Hell. These people of course are speaking from their perspective and not from mine, from what would satisfy their self and not would satisfy mine. Doing any of these things would not help me one bit. It would not undo the past. It would only add more sorrow to whole sorry business. HOWEVER, the possiblity that one day all those chickens will come home to roost, that those perps(not jusy m,ine but everyone's) will FEEL exactly what they made me feel, the terror, the shame, the total humiliation, the anger, the rage, the hatred, the sorrow, the lonliness, the emptiness, the bitterness..well to me that would be justice. you see to do to them what they did to me would not help. because then they would only feel what they would feel and I would want them to feel what I felt. that weay there would be understanding. With underrstanding would come remorse and with remorse change for they would truly KNOW in the only way one can know anything-thru personal experience. Compassion comes thru suffering. Of course maybe we all die and that is that. Life is meaningless. there is no justice. there is no point. And that is not as sad as it sounds because if it is true that we are notning more thany chemicals intereacting andf the universe was an accident then NOTHING MATTERS ANYWAY!!!! and, just to add one teeny Joni : NOTHING CAN BE DONE. So we migh as well just get on with life while it lasts and make it the best we can for ourselves To me there is no fear ultimately for whichever way one believes. I just prefer the first way.(Tho as I said, I have very good reason to think we survive physical death so that rather prevents me thinking the latter altrenative is true!) Whateverr you believ I hope you believe it becsue it truly makes sense to you and not because you are afraid of the consequences of disbelief as taught by some. And if you beive the pure 'scientific' way, I hope that is the result of being true to yourself also, and not because you are so disgusted by the actions and belifes of so many religionists. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 03:12:39 +0300 From: j.pukkila@pp.inet.fi Subject: Re: dog eat dog, and '80s joni again > What a waste of time and energy this entire stream has been. Many valid points were said about the Larry/Joni relationship and how 80's (might have) affected Joni's music. I don't think anyone imagined the thread to end in any kind of consensus about the album. I found the "get a life" post very irritating. I would have replied to it if someone hadn't beat me to it. When someone steps in and practically nullifies everything that was said up til then and drags the conversation (back) to name-calling ("stink bombs") and does it in a very immature way, it deserves a reply that it got - not snobby at all. - --jussi ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jul 1999 19:48:39 -0600 From: Bounced Message Subject: Joni Mitchell From: "John Metcalfe" Date: Sun, 18 Jul 1999 10:54:19 +1000 My daughter is doing a school assignment on the use of satire in portraying man's relationship with nature.
