There is much truth in the "strive to be a light as bright as her" part, though. With the VG8 this is not >necessary because the open tuning is programmed in, no? So, my question >is ......Did Joni have to adjust to the different tension on the strings >of the VG8 ? Good question! I don't think this has come up before ... You're right - there will be a difference in string tensions when playing the open tunings on an acoustic and on the VG8. The more "extreme" the tuning, the greater the difference in string tensions. I don't know if much adjustment of technique is needed however. For the fretting hand, chords may be slightly more/less hard to press down on the neck, but this change must be pretty subliminal. It's more likely to affect the strumming hand - they have to adjust to playing somewhat "tighter" or "looser" strings. On the other hand, Joni has a long experience of playing acoustics in open tunings, and different guitars give quite a different feel to the strumming hand, making the strings feel a little tighter or looser. If she's used to adapting to different acoustics, it's probably not too different when she plays the VG8. Joni has also used electric guitars in open tunings a fair bit, and would definitely have to adapt for this too, so maybe the VG8 just feels like a slightly different electric guitar? (Sidenote: Joni's contribution to Seal's "If I Could" was much more of a duet than his appearance, IMO.) And we can be thankful that Joni didn't do a duet with Kenny Rogers in the 80's, although she probably would've had a big hit with one, especially if it sounded as good as her duets with Johnny Cash... <> We don't have to always buy each other's viewpoints, but the discussion is truly wonderful...it's why I'm here! Just before he re-entered the lander, however, he made the enigmatic remark "Good luck Mr. Gorsky." Many people at NASA thought it was a casual remark concerning some rival Soviet Cosmonaut. However, upon checking, there was no Gorsky in either the Russian or American space programs. Over the years many people questioned Armstrong as to what the "Good luck Mr. Gorsky" statement meant, but Armstrong always just smiled. On July 5, 1995 in Tampa Bay FL, while answering questions following a speech, a reporter brought up the 26 year old question to Armstrong. This time he finally responded. Mr. Gorsky had finally died and so Neil Armstrong felt he could answer the question. When he was a kid, he was playing baseball with a friend in the backyard. His friend hit a fly ball, which landed in the front of his neighbor's bedroom windows. His neighbors were Mr. & Mrs. Gorsky. As he leaned down to pick up the ball, young Armstrong heard Mrs.Gorsky shouting at Mr. Gorsky. "Sex! You want sex?! You'll get sex when the kid next door walks on the moon!" I've decided that Taming the Tiger is really Joni's version of 'Cats'. Hey if Andrew Lloyd Webber could do it, why not Joni? And T. S Eliot isn't going to have anything on our Joan, either, mind you! In 'Harlem in Havana' we have a young female cat (hasn't yet hit her first heat) who is drawn by a returning stray into the world inhabited by the alley cats (much to the chagrin of the older females in her brood). 'Man from Mars', of course, is the Cat That Got Away. Then we have 'Love Puts on a New Face' which is about the fickle and moody nature of our feline friends. 'Lead Balloon' is about a cat & dog fight. It is followed by a cat's eye view of dogs in 'No Apology'. Where can there be a safe haven for a cat in a world full of tire skids and teeth marks? Nasty things, those dogs! The title track gives us a glimpse into one particular aspect of a cat's personality: just how unforgiving & spiteful the creatures can be when they think they've been wronged. And 'The Crazy Cries of Love? Have you ever heard the sound a female cat makes when she's in heat? Or that a male makes when said female is in proximity? Need I say more? 'Stay in Touch' is an illustration of just how difficult it can be to gain a cat's trust (but it's worth the effort so keep at it - or stay in touch, if you will). In 'Happiness is the Best Facelift' one of those older cats who disapproved of that young one in 'Harlem in Havana' is still criticizing and complaining about her (even though she's all grown up now and past any maternal correction - by now she is a confirmed alley-cat - *no moral judgement implied, please!*). And finally 'Here's to You' is bidding a sad but fond farewell to your furry friend when he or she finally has to depart for that big Kitty Heaven in the Sky where there are no dogs, the humans are programmed to open doors & cans of food on command and there is a Mousie on a Stick stand on every corner! So all week I've been trying to figure out just how she's going to be able to accomplish the tour she's stated she wants to do, after her standards album. Is she going to try to do the tour with a Big Band or will it be an orchestra? Has anybody heard anything about which way she's planning to go with this next tour? If she went the Big Band route, maybe she could tour with Lyle Lovett or Harry Conick Jr. and use their bands? Or could it be more on the order of "special guest" with the home symphonies in each of the major cities? I remember James Taylor doing that with the Portland Symphony a couple of years ago.... I make it to the symphony a couple times a year, but missed that one, darn it! The bummer about using the orchestras would be some of the terrific venues like, The Gorge, would probably have to be ruled out, I suppose. So has there been any word on this yet? They have never really seemed to have much character to them. Everyone has their preference though. Or I suppose if you have a certain guitar for a very long time you become attached to it. I've had my Sigma guitar for over twenty years and it definately is the only guitar that really feels like a friend to me.... The catholic religion, in which I was raised can, in my experience, be unyielding in the attempt to define admissible behavior. Usually these dictates from the church regarding most aspects of our lives are, to say the least, unbending. Your letter addresses issues, which are extremely pertinent, especially in this discussion group. Certainly one of the most remarkable and admirable qualities of Joni's work is her total disregard for conventional mores. Like most true artists she transcends the conventions of what we accept as the "norm" and creates her own unique light, which we are fortunate enough to see. The more we listen to her, the more enlightened we truly are. There is no compromised, impure angle to her work. Only pure art is her intention, and it shines through bright and clear. Such purity of spirit cannot be second guessed by "mere mortals". We should only feel blessed that we have been allowed to experience and share with each other such a rare gift. Let's stop and acknowledge the fact that she has brought us together and allowed us to share and enjoy each other's thoughts and spirits. Let's none of us begin to tread on that dimly lighted, limited piece of ground where beauty, talent and genius are subjected to human interrogation. Let's not even go to the place where we reduce ourselves to a point where we would feel comfortable discussing and making judgments on the love life of Joni or any other fellow human. Your entry makes such valid points regarding Christianity and how it relates to this topic. Yours is such a lucid, non judgemental approach to the topic at hand. I am inspired by your ability to reconcile your religious beliefs with your obvious appreciation and respect for a gifted artist. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jul 1999 00:15:52 EDT From: RMuRocks@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni's Standard's "To Go" In a message dated 7/15/99 9:47:27 PM Central Daylight Time, zapuppy2@webtv.net writes: << If she went the Big Band route, maybe she could tour with Lyle Lovett or Harry Conick Jr. and use their bands? >> I don't know, Pen - after seeing her put up with the mismatch of touring with Dylan last time out, it sure would be nice to see her go solo. Bob But I don't see much similarity between the crowd that Dylan brought in, acting very disrespectful to our Joan at times, and the music lovers that would be going to hear Lyle or Harry Jr, along with Joni. I could see Joni gaining many new, younger? fans in a tour like that. The thought of seeing her solo isn't bad, mind you, but I don't know about doing a standards tour solo. Personally though, I think I still prefer the notion of hearing her with a full symphony. Ooooooohhh!!!
