It's the #1 song that I come back to during my romantic longings and hopes. It's interesting that so many of her songs are so hopefully romantic, after all these years and who knows what private heartbreak. So few songs seem to have slipped into a bitter frame of mind. Even the standards that she has chosen to sing reflect a hopeful sort of "torch" song rather than a desparate one. I like that. I've known Bob for about 15 years and met Martin last year. Martin is a die-hard Joni fan and interviewed her for Acoustic Guitar magazine a few years ago. When I showed him my copy of "Morning Glory On The Vine" I thought he was going to cry. Martin told me a funny story about attending the Edmonton Folk Festival the year Joni performed. He got up early one morning (about 6am) and walked outside to the front of the hotel. There on the lawn was Joni and a few of her friends. All of the sudden the sprinkler system came on and proceeded to soak JM et al. Martin thought to himself, "Ah hah - the revenge of the Hissing of Summer Lawns." I hope some of you can attend this workshop as it is being held about 2 miles from my house. Email me privately if you plan to attend. On the great side there was Joni's Vanc. BC Shadows and Light concert. While hanging out at the PNE before the show we saw either Bill and Myrtle or an aunt and uncle of Joan's being led by one of Joni's people to a private entrance while Joni was doing the sound check. And after the show, we were staying across the border in Bellingham, we came back through the border check and got all the custumary questions by the guard. Answering his questions, with probably a good deal of glow on my face, we told him our purpose for being there was that we just saw Joni Mitchell for our first time. He seemed pretty offical at that point, but as we drove off, with our windows still down, we heard him literally let out a howl and yelled "No regrets, coyote!" :-) The heartbreaking memory of being in Canada came on a breathtakingly gorgeous day as we were driving around always beautiful Stanley Park with our kids. As we were soaking up the splendor that was gracing our eyes, the tragic word came across the radio that Stevie Ray Vaughn had died in a helicopter crash the night before. I've just come onto the list, so am not familiar with some of what's gone on before, but all the back-and-forthing is in a very twisted way delightful to me. I would be rolling in the aisles if there were aisles to roll in. It all reminds me so much of home. I am the 3rd of 5 children (so I have middle-child syndrome) and remember sitting around the supper table arguing about anything possible. It used to drive my Mum nuts but now I'm being punished because I've got kids of my own, and guess what? I have to admit, there's nothing like a good argument to get the blood circulating. There are 2 things my Dad used to say on that subject(and I know for sure the first wasn't an original line that he created): 1. "Nothing succeeds like excess" and 2. "Name your subject [and we'll argue about it]". I didn't arrive in time to hear (read?) the original joke which appears to reference human anatomy et al that set the whole thing off (it's OK, REALLY, I am truly NOT trying to start anything! it all becomes irrelevant after a time) Little does it matter. A good free-for-all is not to be missed. (Must be the Irish blood.) Before subscribing, I had never heard of a rosella (I thought it was a new disease, a cross between rubella and roseola!) and I thought the Joni sighting in the Blue Mountains referred to the ones near Collingwood (Ontario. Canada.) Which tells you where I'm from. So thanks to whoever-it-was that mentioned it because I've learned something new today. Sorry if I'm not quoting/referencing/anagramming appropriately or enough. I don't know what half that stuff means and I really hate anagrams. I hear far too many of them in my work as it is. I must come out of hiding and shake Mark's hand on this one. I think this is one of the best "first albums" by anyone anywhere. I'm often surprised when this album is written off as some sort of sophomoric document or as just a "nice try". I Had A King, Cactus Tree, and the wonderful Sisotowbell Lane are three of my favorite songs she's ever written. The latter has always been such a peaceful, meditative song for me. How can anyone remain stressed after listening to that gem? Joni hit the ground running with this album! We're going to see Cowboy Junkies this Saturday. Margo Timmins is a wonderful singer. I think she just gets better and better. Her voice has a soft sound to it but that's deceptive. With the right song she can really pack a wallop. Michael's songwriting continues to develop also. I rank some of his lyrics right up there close to Joni's. Not as melodic, perhaps, but that seems to develop further with each new record also. I've never understood why this band doesn't get more mention on this list. To each his own, I guess!
