She's such a groover ... and I really love the way she dances with one of the guys who sings "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" - it's so sensual and, I can't explain it, she just seems to be at peace with music, being up on stage, letting herself go to the sounds of the band. I really like the intimacy of this concert and it looks like she's in her element in that kind of situation. (NJC) From: andrew power Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 05:23:13 PDT it's funny how our whole nation is stereotyped on the model of the upper crust/le rosbif/limey the owning class of britain have contributed very little to brit society aprt from that querelous upper lip, and the mess that is our class system britain's a history of violence - we exported it to the third wolrd, didn't we?- and the violence of late isn't a trend - it's always been there, but this century, without it being siphoned off into national service/the empire, it's become a part of youth culture (teddy boys, greasers, mods, punks, clockwork orange, NF, scallies etc etc) what's different lately is we've got professional nihilists, who think that by simply clashing with the police, or any symbol of authority, and spannering the daily workings of everyone else's lives - they've struck some great chord against capitalism hardly the problem is is that riots and demo's are undermined by opportunists (political or pernicious) - and all the old forms of protest (sit ins, strikes etc) have lost their appeal because of this - thus weakening the real democracy of social action drw ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 21:43:30 -0600 From: Bounced Message Subject: Re: Joni (ahem) titles - now NJC From: "Helen M. I came across Joni when years ago, my drummer roomate wanted my to hear Jaco's playing on Shadows and Light. I was impressed by his playing there (being a bassist among other things), but it's only been within the last month that I've decided to buy more albums. I heard Turbulent Indigo one summer evening at a professor's house when it was new. I didn't remember the music, but I rememeber that I had to have it. I recently checked it out again on CD Now, and splurged when I found it. I'm a "later Joni" fan, admittedly after checking portions of all of them on CD Now. I own: Shadows and Light Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm Night Ride Home Turbulent Indigo So far, if I had to pick one song as my favorite- a tough thing- I'd choose: My Secret Place. I'm a sucker for great drumming, and great production, and I'll go nuts for anything with Manu Katche on it. I just love the groove on that song, but really the whole song and Joni are great too. They go well together. Other artists/bands that I like (and maybe you might too): Level 42, Sting, Seal, Julia Fordham, Bruce Hornsby, The Samples, Dave Matthews Band, Tears for Fears, Sarah McLachlan, CSN, Michael Manring, Genesis, The Verve, Steve Reich, and Maurice Durfle, etc... I was aware of Joni through here association with David Crosby and Graham Nash, being a huge fan of theirs, but it's just taken me some time to get to the point of wanting to become familiar with her music. I'm glad I've started that process. Another thing is that I also play guitar (in my band I play bass/bgvox/and keys), and I was trying to write some music for the guitarists that didn't have the same chords, notes, and patterns to learn. Obviously, if you retune the guitar in different ways, you can't fall back on familiar standard tuning ways and fingerings, and sound decent, or tonal in the pop music sense. I'm interested to learn about Joni and the music to push "our" music and guitarists in different directions- to shake them of their Matchbox 20/Third Eye Blind-isms- those damn stubborn guitarists... So I'm glad to be here. I can't say I'll be "Mr. Posting to the list everyday", because I don't have a long history of her work, so I'll most likely be lurking somewhat, learning, and letting those that know do the posting. On another note, anyone here from Virginia? -Brad ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1999 14:31:06 +1000 From: "Takats, Angela" Subject: joni LP differences Following my questions about the Clouds LP cover and different lyrics on different LP copies... Kakki- Great post about your weekend. I feel like I was there in spirit and I probably was. Somehow Joni attracts some pretty amazing people, I have never witnessed anything like this in my life. Although there have been times when I have connected hard with people, I don't recall now a time when I felt closer and so in sync with so many at the same time. I am starting to zone in on our pending fest and look forward to playing with new musicians, and meeting new and strange and wonderful people. The get together at your place in January was one of those special nights I will never forget and I never wanted it to end. May your flame continue to burn brightly! Ingoldsby has been enthusiastically plugged by Peter and others here on the list so this caught my eye. But what really made me start packing my bags for a road trip was his mention of the possibility of Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina and even the Croz himself sittin' in at the performance. Loggins, Messina and Croz all live in the Santa Barbara area and Ingoldsby said he is personally nudging them hard to stop by. The show is next Wednesday, July 7th starting at 9:00 p.m., with the group Anastasia & John opening at 7:30 p.m. The place is Soho, 1221 State Stree, Santa Barbara, CA. I'm seriously considering trying to get to S.B. for this - if any of you are also interested, please let me know.
