McKee (grandmother) Angela asks ... >____________________________________________________________ >ALSO, who is Sadie J. McKee? Is there an interesting story >as to why this beautiful album was dedicated to her? > >Ange (always wondering) >____________________________________________________________ Ange, Mckee is Joni's mothers' maiden name. Sadie J. McKee is Joni's maternal grandmother, wife to James McKee. Joni has often credited her grandmother with instilling in her a love of music and also feels that her talent as a poet is an inheritance from Sadie. her grandmother played organ and was a classical musician. here's an excerpt from an interview with Timothy White. TW: The Andrews Sisters era, of course, was World War II and its aftermath, a period that's the setting for "The Tea Leaf Prophecy (Lay Down Your Arms) " on Chalk Mark. It's such a wistful song. Tell me about it. JM: That song began as a music track that Larry wrote. For the lyric, I kept thinking about World War II and my parents' courtship, which was unusual in a prophetic way. My mother had been a country schoolteacher, and she had come to the town of Regina in Saskatchewan to work in a bank. It was wartime, and nearly all the men in the town had been shipped overseas. So there weren't many prospects for her, and she was a good-looking woman, thirty years old--which was old for that time. There was a fancy hotel in that town that served high tea, and you had to wear hats and gloves in those days to get in. One day she and her girlfriend went over there just for the dress-up of it all. When they were finished, a gypsy came over and read her teacup and said, "You will be married within the month, and you will have a child within the year--and you'll die a long and agonizing death." The last part was a horrible and hideous thing for even a clairvoyant to tell anybody. My mother laughed in her face. She said, "This is ridiculous. Look at this town. There's no men left, just frail boys and babies." Two weeks went by, and a friend of a friend had a friend from out of town, and they put my mother and father together on a blind date and it was instant chemistry. My father had two weeks' leave. He said, "I know this is sudden Myrtle"--her name was Myrtle McKee; in the song it's Molly McKee--"but would you marry me?" So they ran off to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and got hitched. I was born within the year, and to this day she feels a little funny about the rest of the prophecy, considering the odds of the other parts coming true. She's seventy-six, and she's never been sick a day in her life. I mean, she's a real germ fighter because she's convinced it's a germ that's gonna knock her down. She does yoga, Tai Chi, cross-country skiing, and doesn't even have a quaver in her voice yet. I say to her, "Don't worry about the gypsy, Mom. Two out of three ain't bad." The gypsy got it wrong. It's me who's gonna die the long and agonizing death, with my bad habits. But I had to ask her, "What made you marry Dad? You were so picky." And she said, "Because he looked so cute in his uniform." So that's in the song too. - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the book "Rock Lives" by Timothy White ~ Interview from March 17, 1988 - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- you can read the entire interview at the following URL: BTW: in this interview Joni also mentions that 'Killer Kyle' the soldier in her song "The Beat Of Black Wings" first appeared in another earlier song, "Cactus Tree" from STAS. Call me repressed, old fashioned, what ever. > I just hate this word when used as slang for female gentalia. I don't even > use it with my best girl friends, and we can get really "unrepressed." See...I don't detest the word at all. It has its place in many people's language. I do see it as a bit "condescending" for some reason that I can't explain. I don't think it's a vulgar word. My thinking is actually very simple: there are some words one just doesn't go around throwing in public - I mean, didn't our parents teach us that? See, now I sound like Miss Manners and that's not how I want to come across because that's not how I am! This is frustrating...I mean...I have kids, you know, and my take on swearing and questionable slang words has always been that these words are like other privileges awarded to adults: if you can use them responsibly and with discretion, it's cool. Sort of like sex and drinking, etc. I don't believe our choice of words for our genitals has anything to do with repression! Unless, of course, people go around calling it "my thing", which I find far more offensive. Otherwise, it's a private thing in the sense that it depends on our upbringing, values and preferences. So, to choose a word like "pussy" and personalize it to that extent is just asking for reactions. Further, if JMDLer can all be lumped together as being "puritanical" than I feel justified in saying that I feel that attitude is really juvenile. I was actually much more insulted to be called puritanical than I was with the subject heading of Eric's original post. What...I'm puritanical because I'm an adult now??? Gimme a break, indeed. Some people are really good at digging deeper and deeper holes for themselves. Take care, Gina PS. One of the things that ticks me off about the word "pussy" is that it's also used to ridicule a male who doesn't measure up to society's standards of maleness. In that way, it is certainly demeaning as I'm sure there's a connection. And then there is "pussy whipped" ... gotta love *that* one...geeeeeeeez : } ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 09:40:19 EDT From: Ginamu@aol.com Subject: Fwd: Listen Benefit (NJC) - --part1_8afad774.24a783c3_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I thought this might be of interest to some people on the JMDL Gina - --part1_8afad774.24a783c3_boundary Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Disposition: inline Return-Path: Received: from rly-yg05.mx.aol.com (rly-yg05.mail.aol.com [172.18.147.5]) by air-yg04.mail.aol.com (v59.51) with SMTP; Sun, 27 Jun 1999 07:04:29 -0400 Received: from w2.meer.net (w2.meer.net [140.174.164.13]) by rly-yg05.mx.aol.com (vx) with SMTP; Sun, 27 Jun 1999 07:04:23 -0400 Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by w2.meer.net (8.9.3/8.9.3/meer) id DAA185631 for undertow-list; Sun, 27 Jun 1999 03:36:45 -0700 (PDT) Received: from meer.meer.net (meer.meer.net [140.174.164.2]) by w2.meer.net (8.9.3/8.9.3/meer) with ESMTP id DAA223302 for ; Sun, 27 Jun 1999 03:36:41 -0700 (PDT) Received: from hub.dataline.net.au (hub.dataline.net.au [203.37.234.6]) by meer.meer.net (8.9.3/8.9.3/meer) with SMTP id DAA18606 for ; Sun, 27 Jun 1999 03:36:12 -0700 (PDT) Received: (qmail 23767 invoked from network); 27 Jun 1999 20:32:06 +1000 Received: from mbdialup78.dataline.net.au (203.46.51.88) by hub.dataline.net.au with SMTP; 27 Jun 1999 20:32:06 +1000 From: darren@frasercoast.aunz.com (Darren) To: undertow@vega.net Subject: Listen Benefit Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 10:34:52 GMT Message-ID: <359239cd.8142739@mail.frasercoast.aunz.com> X-Mailer: Forte Agent 1.5/32.451 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by w2.meer.net id DAA275786 Sender: owner-undertow@vega.net Precedence: bulk http://dailynews.yahoo.com/headlines/en/story.html?s=v/nm/19990623/en/people-listen_1.html Wednesday June 23 2:07 AM ET Listen benefit draws all-star cast By Nick Madigan HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Susan Sarandon, Liam Neeson, Sting, Jeff Bridges and Jamie Lee Curtis are among the performers who have agreed to take part in the Listen benefit, which aims to raise about $100 million for children around the world. Others on the bill are Goldie Hawn, Vanessa Redgrave, Peter Gabriel, John Lee Hooker, Christopher Lee, Brooke Shields, Neneh Cherry, Suzanne Vega and the Chieftains. The benefit, to be held later this year, is being put together by London-based production outfit Tribute. It will include a three-hour televised concert from India, an international telethon, two hourlong TV shows and a pair of albums. Money raised by the Listen project will be donated to charitable organizations, including Save the Children Alliance, Nelson Mandela's Children's Fund, Consortium for Street Children, Covenant House/Casa Alianza, Learning for Life, End Hunger Network and Operation Smile. Artists Jeff Koons, Anish Kapoor, Sheela Gowda, Juan Muno, Robert Wilson, Pierre Marie Brisson, Nelson Leirner and Vik Muniz are on board, as are composers Lamont Dozier, Diane Warren and Simon Moore, and film directors Barbara Kopple and Robert Leacock. Some of the participating celebs will visit children's projects in Central America, Peru, India, Egypt, South Africa and North America during the summer, and will be filmed listening to the children's stories. Others will be shown in recording studios or creating works of art. ``We must listen to what is really going on for children, not just in our homes, but around the world, even if it is distasteful, even if it is not what we want to hear,'' said Curtis. ``What has really hit home to me is the sobering reality of the life of so many children.'' Thirty public-service announcements are also being produced for broadcast worldwide in the fall. Bridges said he was ``impressed with the kids who have had the courage to come up and go through the embarrassment of telling their own story with the idea that they are going to make a difference, that maybe they would be helping kids in the future.'' The children, he said, ``are really so courageous -- they're the real heroes.'' Is there nothing else to discuss? Although Joni is the most prolific of female musicians our century has ever seen, her lyrics are the mainstay of her work. At least for me. I enjoy the analyses of her lyrics as one would dissect a poem, but it's odd that it always results in finding the sexual connotations. It was like that in my creative writing and poetry courses in school, and although briefly fascinating, there are deeper values in this woman's poetry. In all poetry. A good poet doesn't hide behind their words. There really is no point in trying to guess what person or situation Joni is insinuating through her lyrics, but rather the joy of poetry is in applying it to your own trials of life and RELATING to it. By the way, on the cover of BLUE....just what is that in Joni's mouth? Is it by any chance a...a... a penis?!? and maybe we can analyze the similarities between a microphone and a penis. And blue songs aren't like tatoos, they're more like....penises. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 10:05:55 EDT From: TerryM2442@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni's THING In a message dated 6/27/99 2:04:19 AM Eastern Daylight Time, ewwtaylor@adelphia.net writes: << "he picked up my scent on his fingers while he was watching the waitresses legs!" So, to choose a word >like "pussy" and personalize it to that extent is just asking for reactions. I will venture one guess about this and that's the theory that we feel so at home here that we also feel comfortable using slang or vulgarity that can be inappropriate in a forum other than hanging with a few close friends. Perhaps another take on it is that using a word like "yabbadabbadoo" is less asking for reactions and more lulled into a feeling that you are sitting in your own living room with that belching mentality that comes from really, really, really familiar surroundings. I'm not trying to excuse it, just offering up another thought. Certainly, I added my share of joking on the thread. >Further, if JMDLer can all be lumped together as being "puritanical" than I >feel justified in saying that I feel that attitude is really juvenile. I think that one incredible thing about the list is a sense of open mindedness. I don't believe that anyone who objected to the subject header was puritanical one iota. The objections seemed to be more about the slang and as Gina pointed out, slang for female genitalia so often has degrading connotations. It's sure is interesting, though, to read what people see in a painting that is not a photographic rendition. (and then for that, I'm sure you can get 101 different opinions on what it represents!) I'm sitting here looking at my copy of Mingus, (viny, so it's large and clearl AND I am wearing my glasses which I thoroughly cleaned before donning). Even w/ Eric's suggestion planted in my head, I can't see any jewels, (why is a men's genital's often discribed as the "family jewels," but you cannot find anything simliar, (to my knowledge), for a woman's reproductive organs? Hmmm.), any yabbadabbadoos, any (c)over sexual acts, no nuttin' other than a bearded guy with his hair floating to his left and what appears to be Joni, (I DO see those cheekbones and have always taken the female figure to be her), tooting away on what I've always seen as a flutophone. I've come across a couple of such artists: Crofton Orr and Eugene Ruffolo are two of them. The third name is Debra Davis, who has released two stunning albums on her own label : "Uninvited Guests" ( D3 Records ) "Angels In The Attic" ( D3 Records ) Debra was discovered by Dave Beyer ( ex-drummer for Melissa Ethridge ) a couple of years ago. When Melissa Ethridge took a break from the music, Dave started recording and producing what was to become Debra Davis first album, "Uninvited Guests". The album was released in late 95 and reached #22 on the Gavin Americana Chart. Melissa Ethridge was very impressed by her former drummer's new discovery: "I was so impressed by the songwriting. Deb's voice sounded amazing, and she really connects with the audience. I was so touched by the music". Debra Davis is very hard to put down in a special field of music. There are elements of country, folk, rock and singer/songwriter in her music. Her voice and songwriting touch down somewhere between Shawn Colvin and Sheryl Crow. Deep, emotional songs. Her new album "Angels In The Attic" has just been released and the storytelling just follows where her first album ended a couple of years ago. The title track was recently featured in the TV show "Dawson's Creek" and the track "In Your Pocket" could very well be the song the shoots Debra all the way to super-stardom. Musicians on both releases are Dave Beyer, Nick Kirgo, JT Thomas, Mark Cross, Morris Tepper and others. If you're having trouble finding Debra's albums in your local record store, copies are available from : D3 Records 859 Hollywood Way, Ste. 330 Burbank CA 91505 U.S.A. Using such crude words to define a woman's anatomy, in my opinion, just takes us all a step backwards in celebrating and respecting a woman's body. Also, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall the list using terms for "penis" that are very degrading. Boom boom pachyderm isn't as degrading as some other popular words that come to mind. The diet coke ad comes immediately to mind. Women's pin up mags do the same.Somehow tho the only thing that has changed is that women can use men in the way that men have used women, and it is acceptable. For example, women comedians can say about men what men can no longer say about about women(at least not without the hoo ha). Objectifying PEOPLE and disrespecting PEOPLE is wrong. I'm glad to know there was another JMDL'r there. I was the one sitting in the second row who requested the waltz and made the joke about the hamster chewing on the mic cable. It was an interesting evening because I drove there from Atlanta without any idea where I would stay...I struck up a conversation with someone next to me about music and being a musician,etc... I played a song for her and her roommate in the parking lot and consequently was told I could crash at her house. I proceeded to follow her to her house where, after hanging out for maybe a half hour or so, was told I actually could not stay there after all ( her roommate was uncomfortable with the idea) but this same roommate also insisted on putting me up in a hotel room(it was by then raining pretty hard outside) which really blew me away. I ended up hanging out at their house for a while anyway, having a beer with the person I had been speaking with originally. This whole evening really made me think about the power of music as a means of communication and expression...Simply because of my music and common interests in music(we spoke alot about Joni Mitchell) she trusted me enough to let me into her house though she really knew nothing about me. I remember thinking how sad it is that people can't trust anyone these days yet being amazed at the kindness of strangers and their willingness to extend themselves so generously to a "weary musician." I can now relate why Daniel Day Lewis, Robert De Niro or Emily Watson found it hard to let go of a role after a film because once it makes a habit of sticking with you, its hard to let go. But Julia Fordham's voice and music insinuated their ways to my system. She sings in that deep alto that makes her sound from Cleo Laine to Joni Mitchell by way of Annie Lennox. Her lyrics are particularly affecting in the same way Tracy Chapman's introspection makes one see a lot of colors, especially when the former sings of love lost, unrequited and disappointment. She sang "I Can't Help Myself" in that infernally high note. She ended her program with three encores: "Love Moves in Mysterious Ways, Someone to Watch Over Me" and Minnie Riperton's "Loving You" and once again she effortlessly reached that high note with ease. She did say she used to sing backing vocals to Kim Wilde (anyone with information on her?) and her main influence is Joni Mitchell. I was expecting her to belt out a Joni tune, but of her 17-song suite that evening she sang only three non-original songs. Stalk News: :) I was never that keen on seeking autograph, but that evening I was hopelessly drawn to Fordham's voice and her demeanor onstage and added to that, I am always of the opinion that singers who sing exactly like they do on CD are good because there was no technological trickery, no overdubbing, mixing, etc. I waited 2 hours after the show and when she came out I asked for her autograph and she complied and flashed me that killer smile. One week later, I am still in awe. :) Joseph (thinks that Gary Larson should do more cartoons) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 22:15:56 -0700 From: Susan Chaloner Subject: McBABE LOVES JONI... ...Pussy or no pussy ;~) I just love to watch her thread her threads, walk her walk, talk her talk and sing "Why do fools fall in love?" Now 5 years later, I am proud to say I hurdled my oral defense last Monday in economic geography (topic: food insecurity). And before I discussed my intro, I thought it would be a nice touch if I use Joni's lyrics in "Banquet" to convey the essence of my thesis. I couldn't have been truer because Some get the gravy And some get the gristle Some get the marrow bone And some get nothing Though there's plenty to share Thanks to the listers who encouraged me and sent me well wishes during the tumultuous period of writing my "magnum opus", as well as the good vibes in the list that qualified as a well wish as well.
