I have a question for all you folks out there that enjoy covering Joni's music - specifically on the guitar - especially the men. See, I myself am male, and I find that it poses quite a problem in singing most of Joni's tunes. There are a few exceptions like "Little Green" can be done quite nicely (I've found) by eliminating the capo on 4. Or I've found "Hejira" is nice tuned one step higher with the capo added on the second fret. But so many of her songs require almost the entire use of the neck of the guitar. "Amelia" for example - if you try to use a capo, it's nearly impossible to maneuver around the chords. My question is: has anyone found a solution? Is it possible to buy certain strings that tune higher? I am not that educated when it comes to the engineering of the guitar. Are we males forever banished to singing Joni an octave down in boring bass tones? I want to be able to sing her stuff in that great place like she does -- y'know?? Any ideas? Marian? Sue? Terry? Gentlemen? She told me she got the denim shirt through the JM web site and that the t-shirts were sold at Joni's US concerts and there was some talk of them being sold through the web site as well. Unfortunately neither item appears to be available anywhere at the moment. Does anybody have any information on this elusive Joni memorabilia? There are links for July, August, and September, but so far the only event listed on the site is the following: Sunday, July 4 - Britney Spears There is also the requisite link, "About the Garden," which says, in part: "The 1998 Day in the Garden Music Festival, which was held on the 29th Anniversary of the original Woodstock Music Festival, was named after singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell's song "Woodstock", in which she sings "We've got to get ourselves back to the garden". That is exactly what 75,000 people did over the 3-day period of August 14, 15, and 16, 1998 in Bethel , New York." Additionally, there is a link to "Register" for a monthly t-shirt drawing. I did this and of course got a form requesting info about my level of education, age, income, etc. They also ask if you attended last year's event, and if so, what day(s) you attended. I went ahead and registered, not to get a t-shirt (I rarely win sweepstakes of any kind), but because I figure that the more info the promoters can gather on who attended last year, the better our chances are of getting a similar line-up this year. With that in mind, I also wrote to the promoters, and I urge you all to do so, too: - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subj: Joni Mitchell at 30th Anniversary ADITG? However, despite the struggle to keep up I have found great pleasure in reading the many posts discussing ‘why people don’t post’. I’m relatively new to the list (and indeed the internet) and have only sent an occasional post of no great significance and, while I did read the guidelines that came when I joined, have always been a bit nervous and uncertain about the unwritten ‘netiquette’ both on and off list. But, hey, all of a sudden people were expressing all the doubts and insecurities that I thought only I was feeling! I now feel somewhat reassured. I try to read just about everything that comes and it would appear that there are many others like me. I like occasionally to send a private “me too” or “thank you” comment on posts that have struck a chord. I probably should send more because I know how much I appreciate such comments when they come. There are so many posts I want to say "yes" to but I seem to get overwhelmed with the quantity that has to be read and the moment passes. Perhaps as I get more experienced I'll learn to cope with this better. Anyway, I am really grateful for this discussion and offer my heartfelt thanks to all those who shared their thoughts. It is IMO a thread that deserves to be edited and preserved so that those who join the jmdler ranks in the future can also draw the reassurance and confidence from it that I (and clearly others) have done. I haven't found this to be much of a problem, since Joni's voice is pretty high anyway, so an octave down works pretty well. You certainly could retune the strings higher, as long as none of the strings are more than a step or a step and a half max above concert pitch. Any tighter and they will break. Or you could take up Mandolin or something. Or use the VG-8 and play it wherever is comfortable. How can we make it better? I think of the JMDL as more of a big, ongoing people's party, with most folks coming in and staying for the duration, while others leave, perhaps because they don't think this party has a lot of style (they would be wrong, of course). At this party, much music -- mostly Joni's, also other performers' -- is being played. There is much singing along, and discussions are happening in every corner of all of the many rooms, about nearly every subject imaginable. Some discussions are lengthy (even argumentative at times) and involve several participants and are loud enough for everyone to hear. Other conversations are brief or spoken in near-whispers. We seem to have more than the usual share of shy people at this party, and they just listen or perhaps have quiet, private conversations with one another. Because there is so much going on at once, with doors opening and closing and people milling around, with music being turned up and then down, conversations are often interrupted and go unfinished. Someone asks a question or makes a funny or serious comment, but then something happens that pulls everyone's attention to the center of the main room, and the question is never answered or the comment is never acknowledged, and this leads to misunderstandings or hurt feelings. On top of everything that's going on at our party, everyone here has things from outside of the party on their mind (hard to believe, but true). Most of the time we seem to do a pretty good job of welcoming newcomers and making them feel included, of keeping the arguments in check, of steering the conversations back to appreciating Joni (which is why we came here in the first place). But sometimes we forget that even "old timers" need to be reminded that their contributions are valued; although when that subject surfaced just recently, many reminders were sent and feelings were soothed. Generally, we're a pretty caring and responsible bunch, and we're having a pretty good time at this party. How can we make things better? Maybe by continuing to remember that this is a world-wide gathering, that we're in different time zones and different countries, popping in and out when we can. Maybe by remembering that we share similar but not exactly the same cultures and values, and senses of humor in every range. Maybe by simply taking a little extra time to read something we've written before we hit "Send," just to be sure we're being clear in our communication. Maybe by taking a moment to send a brief note to someone when they've said something that made you laugh or affected you in some other way, or when you would give them a hug if you were in the same room with them. Most of all, I think, we can make this better by remembering that we're not perfect individuals, but that we are real and good-hearted people who all have something valid to share, and that it takes all of us to make this the almost perfect party that it's become. Enough of my sappy sentiments for now! That one line always killed me...*that sad request of me to kindly stay away*. Even as I write it now I get chills. This one line is one of the saddest lines I have ever heard in my life. She has been my voice for a long time just like Vonda Sheppard is for Ally McBeal. When I am in funk, I listen to Joni and it lifts my spirits. When I need to cry I can listen to her again and pick my favorite sad songs and let out a good long cry. She is my emotional self. I am so grateful that she was there all these years allowing me to really feel and discover who I really am! So thank you Joni! Since she has been such an inspiration in my life. I like knowing that she is happy. It makes me feel at easy and I say to myself..."Yea, I am glad you are happy again. I worry about you and want your life to be full of happiness!" I'm having over 5 hours of MRIs done next week, and they said I could bring my own CDs that they'll play for me. What Joni (or non-Joni) would you bring that would be calming and encourage stillness. I'll be allowed no moving to the beat! (This may be a good excuse to get a few Joni records on CD that I still only have on vinyl.) I've never read "The Painted Word," but never felt that it detracted from my enjoyment of the song. My take on the Boho Dance has always been the balance between being true to what one really wants to do and what the fashionable trends might be. Trying out the trends are a terrific idea, embracing them because it's "the thing to do," pushes you close to sell-out. I see these lyrics: > >"But even in the scuffle/The cleaners press was in my jeans." as describing that push-me/pull-me. During the 60's, the non-conformists could be as constricting as the establishment they tried to escape. Dress a certain way, embrace certain values. > >The lines that confuse me most are "And you were in the parking >lot/Subterranean by your own design." I've always read these lines to >mean that literally the person being addressed was the architect of the >building, which would imply to me a certain prestige, and that it was a >style of architectural refinement and subtleness (subterranean) the >virtue of which was inscribed upon contempt for Joni's style (!). In >the following verse again the implication is that the person being >addressed has affected a style of simplicity ("Sure it's stricken from >your uniform"), and that in fact this style was a function in part of >not being "rich" ("You couldn't step outside the Boho Dance now/Even if >good fortune allowed"). I am left to wonder why this working architect >is not financially successful and what his relationship is with the Boho >dance, the romanticizing of austerity. Any insight? Is this a complete >misreading of the song? Gosh, I always took the person who was "subterranean" as being Bob Dylan. But I'm admittedly a Dylan numbskull. This whole part of the song seems to portray someone who does the sell-out in terms of embracing what is trendy because it's what everyone expects and falls so far into that pit that they no longer have any real idea who they are and how they can express themselves. >"A camera pans the cocktail hour/Behind a blind of potted palms/And >finds a lady in a Paris dress/With runs in her nylons." Here, I see less legs, (although that is a GREAT interpretation), and more one of Joni's classic portrayals of duality: a Paris dress, (ie a costly, fancy article of clothing), coupled with stockings are just don't work with the outfit. (unless, of course, the line is about Courtney Love!) > >Well those are my random and rambling thoughts about the song. I have >no conclusion, I'm just hoping to hear the views of others, and really >this is the only place I can have this conversation. I for one, enjoyed your views! They were different from mine and helped me to rethink this song. It was really a personal anthem for me as a teenager and I firmly believe that it became the foundation of my overall life philosophy. I would definitely take Blue (as someone has already suggested), possibly also TTT, or TI, or even Clouds/LFTC. From other artists, I would definitely take Carole King's Tapestry, maybe also James Taylor's Mud Slide Slim & The Blue Horizon, although there's a couple of "faster" songs on there. The alternative would be to see if they can play tapes as well, and make up your own from Joni's entire collection - which would be my preference (if it was me). That way you can make sure you don't hear anything too exuberant! Or even better (well, not better than Joni, but better in terms of movement) would be a talking book. You know, where they have someone recite an entire novel onto about 10 tapes! Good luck, anyway!
