Helen >> Helen, The difference is that the confirmation e-mail from Majordomo comes AFTER you join the list and there is nothing that makes you read it. In fact, I'll bet fewer than 20 percent of the people who join actually read it, at least beyond the opening lines. I would not make it a "test" in the test that someone has to pass it to join, but I see nothing wrong with putting people through a 5-6 question fun quiz with answers immediately provided that would force them to read some basic information (or Frequently Asked Questions) WHEN they join. Paul I ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Jun 1999 07:22:44 -0400 From: LOREN CARTER Subject: Who is Eric Andersen? (SJC) This past weekend (yup, the long one), my wife and I were visiting her parents on Maryland's Eastern shore. After a long hard hot day of fishing, swimming, eating, drinking, sleeping, and chasing the little one around, I picked up the weekend entertainment section of the local paper. In it was the following headline and story.... ERIC ANDERSEN AT AVALON THURSDAY EASTON - Eric Andersen, a veteran of the 60s' folk-rock movement, will perform at the Historic Avalon Theatre Thursday June 3, at 8pm. He will play solo, accompanying himself on the guitar and piano. Eric Andersen is one of America's finest lyric-poet songwriters. With a career spanning almost 30 years, he stands with his contemporaries, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, as one of the few remaining pioneers of the 60's singer-songwriter movement continuing to do important work. The article goes on to list some of the artists he has worked with. Some of those names are familiar to me, such as Judy Collins, Peter, Paul, and Mary, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, Beatles, etc. My questions are: Who is this guy? If he is in the class of Joni and Dylan I think I would have heard of him by now. I realize that I'm not as music savvy as some of you here, but the name of someone of this magnitude should a ittle bit familiar. My wife asked, after reading the story, "Who is this guy?" And if he is in their "class" should I take the two hour trek back to Easton to see his performance? He may never pass this way again, and tickets are only $18 at the door. The article also mentions his benchmark album of 1972 titled "Blue River". Now where have I seen the words Blue and River mentioned before?......Oh, that's right we watched "You Got Mail" this weekend how silly of me to forget. True enough, I didn't think of that - it's late, and I'm trying to read mail, and search the net for a chinese symbol for the word music. Bizarre I know, but it's a long story. I don't like the idea of a quiz or exam or any such thing but a FAQ sounds just fine. I have to say I still don't see why to some it's still considered an imposition that new people ask basic questions. Let me reintroduce myself. I was on the list a few months back and left because I wasn't finding the time to really read through it and participate. And I guess I felt like I needed to up my Joni knowledge also...but how better to do that than to stay on the list? I started to miss the discussions so I signed back on and have been lurking in the shadows for a while. My name's Chris, I'm 22, and from Alabama. I've been a Joni fan since a friend of mine let me hear Clouds in 1994. Then, TI came out as I started college that fall. I remember spending hours listening to that as I would drive around the town. I had a radio show on campus that year, and "The Sire Of Sorrow" was frequently played. I've almost built up the whole collection now. I'm buying them and taking them in slowly though. I've been trying to learn her songs on piano and guitar for years. My favorite to play right now is "Cherokee Louise." (Has anyone transcribed the music for "Paprika Plains?") Of course, all the albums speak to me and have their moments, but my absolute favorite is HOSL. (Does anyone out there have music for "The Boho Dance?") After hearing about the misunderstood lyrics, (and I really should have included this during the discussion), I always heard the lyric in "Don't Interrupt The Sorrow" as "You're not just liberation, doll." And "explosions of your autumn" in "Love Puts on a New Face," I'd heard as "explosions of erotic." Thanks for listening....I'm looking forward to many more discussions, as I have several questions to ask. First off, is there a story behind the parenthetical lyrics in "Paprika Plains" that are not sung? If I tour regularly and constantly, I'm afraid that my experience would be too limited, so I like to lay back for periods of time and come back to it when I have new material to play. Because of that, many of us on the list are probably familiar with the song. I did manage to learn most of the words to sing along with it. It has a very upbeat lilt to it. Another of my unrecorded favorites of Joni's is Winter Lady. When I first learned how to play guitar when I was in high school, one of the books my teacher used was The Music of Joni Mitchell songbook, which had many of her unrecorded songs in it. When I heard Winter Lady on the tape tree, I couldn't for the life of me figure out how I knew most of the words upon first hearing it. I even asked the list if anyone like Tom Rush or Gordon Lightfoot had ever recorded it. It was driving me crazy. I finally figured out that the reason I was so familiar with it was because I had learned how to play it, and some of the others with the little check marks next to them, back in around 1968. I love those early songs. They had such strong, beautiful melodies. Hearing her actually sing them on the tapes was a revelation. Thanks for sharing so much about your experiences with Joni. The tapes, all high quality soundboard recordings from the archive of top engineer Stuart "Dinky" Dawson, are being released by Rykodisc. "Everything is being authorized," Dinky tells MOJO. "I'm currently negotiating with Walter and Donald for a Steely Dan concert recorded in Seattle in 1974, one of the best live shows you'll ever hear. I've presented Ryko with 300 tapes that'll keep them going for the next 10 years. It's a treasure-trove. Mick (Fleetwood) did the sequencing on the Mac set and he was like, "People have got to hear this!" The Joni shows date from a doomed mid-'70s Canadian tour. "Her life was in turmoil," Dinky recalls. "She was going through personal stuff with her boyfriend and legal things. They had to give back the money at one show because Joni would only play one song-she didn't like the audience, poor girl. But the Milwaukee show was real good in an off-the-wall way." Other acts likely to feature in the series include the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Joan Baez, Bonnie Raitt, Weather Report, Flying Burrito Brothers and Linda Ronstadt. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V4 #237 ************************** The Song and Album Voting Booths are open!
