We did like a lot of the same dance and New Wave music: the B-52s, Scritti Politti, Eurythmics. He had a very bad Joni beginning when someone gave him MINGUS as a birthday present. That's not the right Joni album for a neophyte who doesn't like jazz. Over the years, he never said a word as I played Joni's Eighties and Nineties albums and took dips back into her older stuff on vinyl. He seemed indifferent. Then we broke up. Although he initiated the break, he wanted to return and I wouldn't let him. BLUE and HEJIRA were my albums during that period, the two greatest break up albums of all time. One day I called him to see if he had my copy of a Freud biography and I heard HITS in the background. "Do you have the radio on?" I asked. "No, it's a disc," he answered. "You're playing Joni Mitchell?!" I asked. His response was, "Well, you aren't around anymore to do it for me". It was a moment of triumph and reminded me of that moment in Annie Hall when Alvy finds Annie coming out of a screening of The Sorrow and the Pity with her new flame and they have a laugh. I love all of Joni's albums -- all of them, some more than others. The breakup albums don't have much relevance right now, but HOSL was always the most thoughtful and stimulating of them. It must have been written when Joni was happily in love and would turn outward to the rest of the world for material, the way most of her stuff with Klein did: social commentary, stories about others, remembrances of childhood. I'm sure everyone's noticed many of her albums have some song about her wild teenage past. On a very old thread, I think Snakes and Ladders is a great song to dance to. I love some of the interpretations for Don't Interrupt the Sorrow. Now would anyone like to take on Electricity? Take the challenge! An absolutely beautiful tune, and pretty words, but what do they mean? Copper Queen Lizzie? Sounds like that old and dangerous way of using a penny to fix a fuse box. One friend was ecstatic to receive C&S. To another I gave "Hejira," brand-new for her. (I just love being a Joni missionary!) But another friend, a rabid Jackson Browne fan, was so miffed that JB had been accused of domestic violence that she refused to listen to Joni for years, until I lent her the JMDL videos, after which she became a little more receptive. I gave her MOA tonight, and she at least PRETENDED to be grateful!^) No point in preaching to the choir, I guess. (Still to be distributed: "Blue," to someone not in the midst of a depression...?) And as for the unromantic nature attributed to Geminis -- surely this is an unfortunate error? I'm a hopeless optimist -- how romantic can you get? I was also "born with the moon in Cancer," lucky Number Seven! In an interview published in an Australian music magazine, "Rhythms" (April 1997), JM was asked about the "indelible effect" that Jaco Pastorius had on her music. Because this interview may not have been published elsewhere, I thought some brief excerpts might be of interest to the list. To the above question she replied: "Well, prior to meeting Jaco I had been newly introduced to the experience of working with an expanded palette with other musicians, and while the first collaboration was very exciting, 'Court and Spark' that is, most of the playing came from existing chords in the skeleton of what I played, it was added very carefully. ... In the coming of the next record I gave my musicians freer rein, as a result on 'The Hissing of Summer Lawns' in some places there was more jazz expression in that I allowed them to express more of their own melodic opinion and they came out of the jazz idiom and therefore the colours that they added to my colours were more idiomatically jazz. ... I learnt that what they did was nice but that I had strong opinions, so I began to then try and guide them closer to what I wanted. ... The bass part always sounded dull if you isolated it and listened to it by itself, it wasn't musical. Why couldn't it be more musical than that I asked myself, that each part, rather than being merely supportive, would have a chance as a colour to express itself and then go back into a supportive role. ... When Jaco came along ... I felt like I'd been trying to invent Jaco for a couple of years and there he was. ... Jaco changed the bass - it was great working with him. Plus he pushed himself up in the mixes really hot you know, like if you pulled him down he'd push himself up, he was a very dominant male (laughs)." I hope this wasn't too long. We owe him sincere thanks and must count ourselves lucky to be part of all this via our luv of Joni. However as one of 3 DAT to Cassette dubbers I see a pitfall awaiting you Cassette to Cassette dubbers. Simon has, bless his heart, supplied the DAT with a 0dB reference tone (that's max loudness for you non techies) so that I can set my cassette copies to consume a good hearty magnetizing dinner - he recommends +5dB for Type II tape and +7dB for Type IV cassettes - IMO good retentive advice. (This is a rare example of a magnetition's attempts at humor) But the level of the Kanata, Ontario Concert has such huge dynamic range, that after a few minutes of cassette to cassette dubbing you might think, 'Hell's Bells! this is not too loud, I'll turn it up, my copy could get boosted in level from this." DON'T !!! Keep the copy at the same level as the branch original. Towards the end of the show, and especially in the surprise sting in the tail of this tape, the dynamic range is fully exploited and if you boost your copy you'll blotto out the end in gross analogue distortion. I was recently at home recovering from having been served a rat in a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken, and being a bit under the weather, I decided to take a brief nap. When I awoke I was in my bathtub and it was full of ice and I was sore all over. When I got out of the tub I realized that my KIDNEYS HAD BEEN STOLEN! Then, I saw a note on the bathroom mirror that said, "Call 911!" But I was afraid to use my phone because it was connected to my computer, and there was a virus on my computer that would destroy my hard drive if I opened an e-mail entitled, "Join the Crew!" I knew THAT wasn't a hoax because I have a friend who is a computer programmer who is working on software to save us from Armageddon when the year 2000 rolls around. His program will prevent a global disaster in which all the computers get together and distribute the $200 Neiman Marcus cookie recipe. (I know for a fact that's REALLY true, because I read it all last week in a mass e-mail from BILL GATES HIMSELF, who was also promising me a free Disney World vacation and $5,000 if I would forward his e-mail to everyone I know.) Anyway, I managed to crawl down to the corner and tried to call 911 from a pay phone to report my missing kidneys, but reaching into the coin-return slot I got jabbed with an HIV- infected needle around which was wrapped a note that said, "Welcome to the world of AIDS." Luckily I was only a few miles from a hospital... the one, actually, where that little boy who is dying of cancer is being treated. You know... the one whose last wish is for everyone in the world to send him an e-mail and the American Cancer Society has agreed to pay him a nickel for every e-mail he receives. (By the way, you should know that I sent him two e-mails. One of them was a bunch of x's and o's in the shape of an angel.... you know the one... if you get it and forward it to twenty people you will have good luck, but if you send it to only ten people you will only have ok luck, and if you send it to less than ten people, everyone on the planet will have BAD LUCK FOR SEVEN YEARS.) So anyway, I crawled back home, got in the car and tried to drive myself to the hospital, but on the way I noticed another car driving along without his lights on. To be helpful, I flashed my lights at him and was promptly shot as part of a gang initiation. But, I'm going to be OK now, and they're going to let me go home once my transplant to replace one my stolen kidneys has completely healed. - -- CARLY SIMON DISCUSSION LIST http://www.ethericcats.demon.co.uk/ethericcats/index.html TANTRA’S/ETHERIC PERSIANS AND HIMALAYANS http://www.ethericcats.demon.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 18:45:47 -0400 From: Vince Lavieri Subject: Re: (NJC) spouses I agree... my partner and I are members of the Lyric Opera (Chicago) - me -and Michigan Opera Theatre -him- and while I love opera, I also give him a hard time about him not liking any music except it if was written by someone who died a long time ago.
