I read Wolfe's book about 20 years ago because of the Summer Lawns connection. I recall it was a slim volume about modern art and how artists start out as alternative and eventually become mainstream. He slagged the critics who hold a seemingly god like power to say what is good or bad art. Wolfe made up the term Boho Dance to describe the courtship between artist and critic in which the artist allows himself to be influenced by the critic instead of remaining true to his own vision. Joni sees herself as an uncompromising artist. Unlike the hard time band with negro affectations, she had style when she was poor. Her jeans were clean and there was lace along the seams. She refuses to be capsulised as folk or rock or pop or jazz for the convenience of the critics. Maybe she expected HOSL to be panned by the critics and used Boho Dance to get her retaliation in first. Instead it was hailed as a brilliant achievement and one of the albums of the year. Even more than that, it is the album I find most comforting to put on, sonically, no matter my mood. I've been discovering the songs on HOSL one at a time. Most of these ("Sweet Bird," "Shadows and Light," "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow," and "Jungle Line") have been discoveries prompted by JMDL discussions. One ("Harry's House") I discovered because of Joni's recent performance of it. Another ("Hissing of Summer Lawns") I just discovered because I put it on my mix of summer songs. I put it right after Miles Davis's "Summertime," which really brought out the spaciousness and the jazz of the song. On this album more than any other I am struck by how much I come to enjoy songs individually, with not one dud. I look forward to becoming more intimately acquainted with the songs that remain. Also, it should be said that so many of these songs are great character sketches, but they hang together almost as an anthology. The Saga Continues As promised by me, and mentioned by Kakki, Here is "The Rest of The Story" I finally completely fulfilled my long time Joni dream on Tuesday, the day before my birthday. The first part of my dream was to meet and speak to Joni in person, which most of you know, actually happened over a year ago (October 5th 1997 to be exact ; - ). The other part of the dream was to obtain a piece of her art to hang on my wall. I asked her about doing that when I met her and she basically told me she doesn't exhibit or sell her work even though she has a storage place full of it that is "costing her a fortune". So, when the signed lithos of the covers from TI and TTT were available, albeit in limited supply, at the concerts last year, my dear husband performed heroically, missing dinner, and nabbed me one of each as a birthday present last year. They are framed beautifully side by side in my nook. Happy and Sad Joni, Day and Night Joni, greeting me every time I walk towards the kitchen. Now you probably think I should have been content, but silly me, I really wanted more than just a self portrait/album cover piece of her work. About 3 months ago I became aware of a guy who actually had some of her lithos from the '80's and was willing to sell. (How he got his hands on them is another story, I'll tell later) Anyway, it's a kind of long convoluted story, fraught with dissappointments. But to make a long story short, with my persistence, I was actually able to snag the last one he had available!!! It's a gift from my husband for my birthday. Joni art for my BD two years in a row! Being 40 something (or as my husband puts it "8 the hard way") ain't so bad! The piece is absolutely beautiful, as yet unframed, and numbered 11/50. It is a still life which consists of a chair, an open book, some artist supplies and an ashtray full of butts. I can just see her looking those items in her studio and deciding to paint them. The predominat color is blue. For reference, a small version can be found on the inside of the WTRF album, lower right. Believe me, that little piece there does not do it justice at all. I am, of course, incredibly thrilled to have it. It will soon be framed and hung in the bedroom. I truly am a Lucky Girl! - -- Phyliss, who still believes dreams can come true if you are passionate about it and you take aciton a/k/a Luck is the result of hard work. pward@lightspeed.net http://www.bodywise.com/consultants/bpward ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 01:08:14 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: joni a litmus paper test (NJC)(?) joni is a true litmus paper test for me too, but i seem to be much more tolerant of joni-blindness when it comes to lovers. i can't be FRIENDS with someone that doesn't at least respect joni, though. i can understand a friend not being a fan, but indifference to joni is something i take as a personal affront if it comes from a friend. i wonder why it's not so important when it's a lover. maybe i am a lot more vulnerable to my friends than i am to my "spouses" [if and when i have them]. wallyk, who today taught his students to avoid gender-specific words such as wife when writing their mba application essays and instead use spouse ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 01:15:03 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: RE: Joni and our spouses [this one njc] oh god!!! a couple with "his and hers" cd magazines!!! what won't we find on the jmdl wallyk catgirl purred: (actually we have a Joni magazine, a Beatles >Magazine and then ones with each of our names on them-his music and my music) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 17:30:41 +1200 From: "Helen M. Apparently they actually absorb Vitamin D from the sun, which is good for the skin, and ironing destroys it. I don't actually care if it's true or not, it's a good enough excuse for me! Until this list I found very few men who appreciated Joni less alone be a fan. For a decade or two, my general concensus was that men didn't like Joni because her lyrics were a bit "cutting" (i.e. "Woman of Heart and Mind"). Alas, that opinion has been altered! My husband respects and enjoys her work (especially those albums with Jaco and Wilton), but if I go into a Joni marathon he will generally leave the room. :) Finally, I don't think I could be close with anyone who didn't appreciate music. IMNSHO, anyone with any appreciation for good music would not disapprove of Joni! my thoughts, michelle - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= "Inside every man lives the seed of a flower If he looks within, he finds beauty and power" http://www.minnieriperton.com - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 02:13:40 EDT From: IVPAUL42@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni and our spouses In a message dated 5/27/99 8:17:35 PM Eastern Daylight Time, messling@enter.net writes: << I guess it's time to admit that my soon-to-be spouse fell asleep at last fall's Madison Square Garden concert. I'm so happy to be able to share this with people who will appreciate it.....When I was a freshman in college, I walked into a coffeehouse and heard a guy play "Cactus Tree" so beautifully...all 5 verses...I couldn't believe it. We began a five year relationship of which Joni's music was a neverending topic to discuss & be thrilled by. He taught me to play her songs, bought me a dulcimer..we even hitchhiked across Canada one summer in the early 70's, joking that she might pick us up sometime..(no such luck)..we visited Saskatoon and just had a great time SHARING our mutual love of Joni. When he left for a different college, our phone calls were mostly of our playing the latest Joni song we'd figured out into the receiver, to try and outdo the other, all in good fun. It was a time I'll never forget......thanks for listening and letting me relive that innocent time again!
