They all seem to originate from a 1973 concert film called "Wattstax". This is some of the wildest, blackest, baddest music I've ever listened to! Anybody out there who can tell me more about this? I'd greatly appreciate it! Winfried *********************** I remember it coming out Winfried. Isaac Hayes was the big name in that I think. The road is all." -- Willa Cather ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 11:35:26 EDT From: Dflahm@aol.com Subject: Guns (NJC) Most people acknowledge that the NY TIMES has a left-of-center political philosophy; this may be explicit in their editorial and roster of Op-Ed contributors or implicit in their selective quotations from the statements of public figures. Nevertheless, I was struck by two quotes on p. A23 of today's (5/21) edition. First, in a news article: "Michael Shoels, whose son, Isaiah, was one of those killed (in Littleton) said afterward that he had given the President a two-page letter that Mr. Clinton promised he would read. Mr. Shoels said: 'Such a tragedy as this, we should use it as a tool to make change. I cry before I go to sleep and in the morning I still feel the tears. But I have to stay strong as a human being.' " Second, in the NEWS ANALYSIS piece, on the same page: "Some Republicans were furious that they had been caught so flat-footed. 'We're losing,' complained Senator Bob Smith of New Hampshire, a Republican Presidential candidate, who is an avid opponent of gun control. 'The other side skillfully used terrible tragedies to change peoples' votes.' " The TIMES did not indicate, nor do I suggest, that Bob Smith was referring to the Shoels statement. Well, I don't know how citizens (or any one citizen) might obtain a sense of what politicians say--in person, C-SPAN, or media reporting, mainline or other. BUT...I am confirmed in the feeling I had over a year ago that, despite his despicable behavior, Clinton would never be removed from office by the GOP-"controlled" Congress. The reason is brutally simple: Republicans are perceived by voters/the public/citizens (whatever) as, at best, insensitive, and, at not-best, hateful. DAVID LAHM ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 09:11:57 -0800 From: mwyarbro@zzapp.org Subject: RE: Guns (NJC) David Lahm wrote: <<>> I would clarify this to say that the NY Times generally has a left-of-center tendency on *social* issues and a rock-solid establishment or "centrist" bent on economic issues. Their politics are generally reflective of the middle- to upper-middle class mostly-white "liberals" (as opposed to "progressives" or "radicals") who buy it (and shop at the high-end fashion boutiques among its advertisers). It ain't called the Upper West Side Times for nothing. The fact of the matter is that any spectrum model of political belief is constructed, not intrinsic. Where we place the "center" in the US is considerably to the right of where it is placed in many European countries, and to be fair, to the left of where it might be placed in some Islamic fundamentalist countries. This does not, of course, change your fundamental point that their reporting on the gun issue may be biased. Indeed, I would argue it must be, because all reporting is biased--if not in what is mentioned, then in what is not. It is thus important for the reader to be aware of the bias, which is why I've clarified my opinions on their bias above. On the heels of Ashara's post, I say "rah. rah" or whatever it is they say. Though, if I end up going to JoniFest don't expect any pom poms, okay? Keep the pledges coming folks, there about 50 (that's my guestimate) who regularly post to the list, so come on people now, smile on your brother! And the lurkers, lurk away but whatever you do, send a contribution. By the way, is Wally the man with the dark hair and mustache who at the beginning of PWWAM is viewing one of Joni's paintings and comments in reaction to one of his friends, something like "It really does" ? I don't recall what his friend says. But Ashara, doesn't the NJC limit the people to whom your reminder goes out? Can't the JC only people be a little flexible on this one? It is essentially none of my business, nor does it have anything to do with anything I associate with Joni, which is purely aesthetic, purely enjoyable and totally gratifying musically, poetically and intellectually. I don't like this first ASCAP photo simply because when I look at it, I do not see Joni. I think the "glamour" of this Joni look is the result of the photographic technique, which in MHO is not all that flattering on this photo. Where are those famous, incredibly beautiful high cheek bones? And her eyes don't even look hers. I think she looks far more beautiful in the PWWAM video. I like those gorgeous wide legged pants she wears. She is dressed very tastefully and her hair style in the video is the most becoming ever since her look on the For The Roses cover. She could be wearing a potato sack and she would have looked gorgeous simply because of the grace and elegance she displays as a brilliant woman and a creative genius. She looks beautiful because she knows she is incredible and I shall assume this until I know for sure otherwise. I really love it when Joni is mentioned in current films, TV shows and commercials. I can’t figure how if her name is being mentioned more often, or if I’m just more tuned in to it. I think she’s mentioned more often ‘cause I’ve been tuned in for 28 years and the mentions are definitely on the increase. It really pleases me that she has had such an impact on a generation of writers who are now peppering their prose with Joni tidbits.
