The offer of your assistance if needed is a very welcome change. I think the guidelines will also help; at the least it's a recognition that such abuses occur, and cannot always simply be ignored. And the fact that you're humble and honest enough to admit that your previous way of handling this problem was not, for the long-term, the best way, well, I'm truly impressed. To list members who read the messages last weekend and just saw it as another flame war (although to me it was more of a town hall meeting), just hope that you never have the problem. But, if you do, the groundwork for dealing with it has been established. Thank you so much Les. And thank you too Kate for bringing this issue out into the open for discussion. It might have been annoying or unpleasant to some people to read about, but I think the community is stronger because of it. Ignoring problems stifles honest and interesting conversation, and no one wants that to happen... it's not the Joni way. I just wanted to share something that I experienced that kind of relates to this private mail issue... as everyone knows I was opposed, ummm, 'enthusiastically' shall we say, because I had the nerve to express an opinion that NJC sexual/religious/political 'grandstanding'/'soapboxing' should be toned down or taken to a forum where it would be more appropriate and welcomed. (and, needless to say, I have not changed one iota in my opinion) however I *have* sat back and tried to get to know those who post here a bit better and, in some cases, have found that I was wrong about my first or second impression of certain individuals and have mellowed some... I have also learned some other things as well... eg: on *any* list you will find that there are those individuals who really thrive on debate... like a black belt looking for a sparring partner, they are looking for someone who can really 'mix it up' and, frankly, really love a good(?) fight! there is also the occasional person you will find who is, as I was accused of being, attention seeking and will always try to manipulate things to place themself center stage, becoming jealous of anyone who 'steals' that spot. a person like this is probably somewhat emotionally disturbed and, if we as a group can recognize it, I feel we should gently exclude that person form the list, as you mentioned, not really so much because *we* are offended/bothered, but mostly because, by allowing them to continue we are just enabling them in their disorder... ie: it's not just a pain to us but, whether they realize it or not, which they probably don't, they are hurting themselves as well. what I wanted to share about the private email is sort of two-sided... first, it must be understood, if one has never been on the 'hot seat', that one can get pretty defensive when their getting hit from all sides... ok, well, someone who had been opposed to my views in past postings, a few weeks later wrote me privately asking a seemingly innocent question about 'the old days' and I wrote them back asking if it would be ok if I posted my reply to the list as well so I could share those remembrances with everyone... well, they surprised me by posting *that* email to the list without asking me and, les, I want to tell you, I was SO offended! I was outraged! I wrote them back and tore into them with both barrels blazing! I wrote them about two pages of 'who the hell do you think you are' tirade and ya know what? I wish I could go back and retract everything I said... I was wrong. oh, technically I was right, I guess... they had broken the code... they had disrespected me when I had given them that respect of asking them... but I reacted emotionally when I was upset with the first thing that came to mind and from this experience I have learned something... NEVER do that! just never, ever do that cause, though you may be right in what you say, it's almost guaranteed that you will be dead wrong it how you say it and cause hurt you will later regret if you have any sense. I have not seen that person onlist for a long time but if they should happen to read this I want them to know I am sorry for what I said... there are, I believe, around 600 members of jmdl but probably only around 50 max that post even half regularly from what I've seen... granted many of them are probably just readers and have no intention of ever posting but, having experienced what I have, I wonder how many of them are 'laying low' because they are just a bit shy about maybe getting into something like this current situation when all they are really interested in is Joni... I know I'm not going to win any popularity prizes for this, but... how about some of you 'black belts' give the rest of us a break? Probably the confusion is that the strong wind storms that originate in the desert and sandblast everything in their path are sometimes called "santanas" or the "devil winds" but the winds coming from the desert through the canyons are called "Santa Anas", originally based, I believe on the name of one of the canyons. She has a first LP out (on Reprise). Fool that I am. The recent heated mails did not come about because of NJC! It is NOT NJC that causes them. It is NOT NJC that causes people to flame. It is NOT NJC that causes people to send nasty private mails. It is NOT NJC that causes people to get upset. It is PEOPLE who cause these things. I find it astonsishing that there are people who think that discussions of life should be prohibited because people get upset. We all have personal responsibilty, which includes responsibilty for our feelings and how we act upon them. If we get out of our prams because of something we read on the list or that was sent to us individually, that is our responsibilty. That does mean it is okay for people to get nasty and spew such negativity-they too are repsonible for that. In the end, we need to look at outselves and our opinion of ourselves if another's negative opinion of us gets us so riled. I know it is not easy but it does get easier with practice and thought. Quite some time ago i was deeply offended and angered by some post to me. i burned with it. When i was able to look at it more objectively, i realised that what was written was untrue about me so why was i so bothered? i also realised that the writer had a problem which wasn't me. I also realised the their opinion of me was worthless. realtionships of any sort are not easy. avoiding certain issues in relationships is just burying one's head in the sand and does not make for an honest relationship. In an ideal world we would take responsibilty for our own feelings and reactions/actions. in an ideal world we would not give back what we were given if what we were given was negative. How can adding a negative to an already neagtive situation make it better? Mind I have learned that it is helpfull in the throws of strong reaction, to write to the person and call them everrtything nasty one can think of and then DELETE it without posting!!!!! (especially those who live in Florida). I have been somewhat involved in an organization here in Ft. Myers, FL that is called A.C.T. which is Abuse Counseling and Treatment. There are shelters and crisis hot lines for women and children that have been abused. It's suprising that in a somewhat small town like mine that in 1998 there were 6500 calls to the crisis hot line, and 655 women and children that spent time at the shelter. For the past 10 years they have an Art Auction every August where both local and world reknown artists have donated their artwork to raise money for this cause. The well known artist Robert Rauschenberg (who lives here) helped to start this event. Besides donating some of his own artwork which usually goes for around $40,000 or higher, he manages to get some of the other well known artist such as the late Roy Lichtenstein and others to donate some of their work. The big exciting news this year is that they've arranged to have the actress Sharon Stone to work as a co-auctioneer. This should raise quite a bit of money for such a worthy cause................now if they could only get Joni to donate some of her fabulous work. So if any of you Floridian JMDLer's are in the area on Aug.28th, come to a very fun and worthy cause. Thanks for letting me share my excitement. Lamadoo! You brought me out of the shadows! I had planned to announce to the JMDL my big news of reading in Entertainment Weekly that Joni won an award. I should have known that no secret could be withheld from the JMDL for long. It's nice to see your post Jim. Mary Pitasi, Ashara, Paul and everyone else here from day one, I miss you guys. I wish all well. To those who are newer to the list, I truly wish you a belated welcome you to this wonderful place. Don't fret or despair that because of a few disagreements that this list will disentegrate... It won't. I don't know how to explain it, but there is a bond here stronger than almost anything I've ever seen. I've been away from the list for almost a year because of starting a new job which has taken up a lot of my time, so I really miss staying up till 3 am reading and answering digests. And when I tell people about the Joni list, I feel as if I'm talking about one of my dearest, closest friends. Being away from the list, only stopping now and then to peek in, I'm amazed how all of the new members feel so at home so quickly. This is something that in almost three years, has never changed. Everyone is always welcomed as a long, lost friend who is beckoned to "Come In From The Cold" as Joni so nicely puts it. To know that others understand just how much Joni's music means to us, this is something money just cannot buy. I know my life has changed forever because of it. For the first time in my life, I was no longer afraid to fail. At forty-one years old, I'm finally beginning to live. So even though my name is not on the digest every day, my soul and spirit is always with you. Take care of yourselves. Amid the crush of press covering ASCAP's 1999 pop music awards, a god and goddess were doing the rounds--Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder. By the way, the deities really are friends. How can we tell? "I told Joni to put that cigarette out," Wonder said. "I said, 'I'm going to have to get my belt, kid.' " The lady of the canyon seemed to be drinking in the accolades as the evening's top winner. Soon she would receive the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers' Founders Award for being one of pop music's heppest cats ever. Of course, being Joni Mitchell, she couldn't resist peeling back the layers of the event. "Awards are nice if the right things are appreciated," she said with a smile, "but even in reviews, very seldom do I see a guy who really gets where the gemstones are. I see a lot of bad criticism and the praising of things that are right next to something that's more praiseworthy. I know where the bones are buried, the things that I would be critical of, but they [critics] don't land on them." Mitchell added that she's working on arrangements for a new album of standards, including "Stormy Weather," with the 66-piece El Niño Orchestra. When the song finished I went and hunted up the Kerouac lines which come originally from an essay on the Beats he published in a magazine called Esquire in 1958. He observed that 'beat'"meant characters of a special spirituality who didn't gang up but were solitary Bartlebies staring out the dead wall window of our civilization." Is this not Joni Mitchell, I thought! John. PS. If Joni is 'beat' is "Hejira" her "On the Road"? PPS. Bartleby is a character in a short story by Herman Melville. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V4 #223 ************************** The Song and Album Voting Booths are open!
