Having only used my CD-writer for backing up thousands of JPG files (I'm a photographer) I thought copying WAV files would be simple. Nononono.... I wasted 5 CD-Rs - now merely expensive coasters. Older poorly recorded CDs like Mingus & STAS refuse to be copied, crashing my PC bigtime. Tonight I was finally able to copy one song from each CD onto a CD-R. Here's what I ended up with: 1. Night In The City (copied 1/2 Night In The City/1/2 Marcie - WHY?) 2. Chelsea Morning 3. Rainy Night House 4. This Flight Tonight 5.Woman of Heart & Mind 6. Down To You 7.Blue (live) 8. Amelia (live) 13. Wild Things Run Fast (wanted Love but it wouldn't fit....) 14. Fiction 15. Cool Water 16. Night Ride Home 17. Turbulent Indigo (my personal fav) 18. Ashara has an ulterior motive!} I can keep all of you updated to what might be in the raffles and entice you to send your donations/write your essay/attend the Jonifest!) ;-) Some raffle donation ideas: CD's, pictures of Joni, (Leslie and others?), CD's from our talented JMDLers, (David? Tom? Fred? Bryan? Claud? Others?) Joni videos, concert audios, posters, t-shirts, etc. In short, anything wonderful that would be fun to include. (Please don't send your dirty socks!) Questions? I was wondering what everyone's favorite song connection to a film, story, novel, play or poem is. Joni or non-Joni, though I realize this presents some problems for the list, as it's currently divided. I thought of this because of the recent post about Harry's House and the film Dairy Of A Mad Housewife. I'll start: One of mine is a song called Mercy Street by Peter Gabriel. It is a beautiful song on Peter's album, So. It is inspired by my favorite poet, Anne Sexton, of whom Peter is obviously a fan also. Another connection I've heard about is the David Crosby song "why can't we go on as three", which I can't for the life of me remember the title of. Whether the connection has any truth to it or not, I have always believed that song was inspired by Stranger In A Strange Land - the science fiction novel by Robert Heinlen. If I remember correctly, the pieces do fit. My daughter just finished reading it and I wanted to play the song for her but I don't have the album in my collection. Truthfully I don't even remember what album it's on. Was it Déjà vu? This isn't one of my favorite connection to a book/play/poem/film but since I've been thinking about it, I thought I'd mention it. I hope to hear about other people's favorite connections. There are many, so I would like to really have folks focus on the ones which are most meaningful to them. If people want to include philosophers, scientists, psychologists, painters and sculptures, that's ok too. Sorry if this has been done before, just someone let me know so that I don't feel foolish if no one responds. However the procedure should be really simple and successful everytime. Mine is an Hewlett Packard and the program i use for copying(ripping) is Adaptec. I put the cd into the cd-writer that i want copied. open the Adaptec easy cd creator and it makes a copy of the track or the whole cd depending on what i asked it to do. Then i remove the cd and put in a blank. Then I tell it to make the cd and it does! A 74min cd takes 37 mins to burn. if you don't have Adaptec I would highly recommend it. Not only can i copy cd's but tapes and vynl and md's. It will 'clean;' it up for me too before putting it on cd. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 22:42:46 +0100 From: catman Subject: Re: IE v. It was also covered by Jefferson Airplane (Grace Slick singing) on one of their LP's (Crown of Creation?). Also, Crosby still does it live, and I believe it is on one of his newer live CD's. "Water brothers", from a line in the song, comes from Heinlein's book. Crosby has said that the song was from own experiences. I always thought that it was about Crosby and two nubile young women in a menage a trois. He mentions in his autobiography, "Long Time Gone," that when he was with the Byrds, they steadfastly refused to record Triad. Now that I have a nubile young daughter of my own, I can kinda relate to the "mother's ghost on your shoulder part." Maybe one day some of the great classically trained singers will get around to doing Joni - I can particularly hear this song being sung by a tenor or baritone but I think it could also be carried off by a mezzo soprano. There are lots of times when two grey rooms is the only song I listen off night ride home. What other JM songs can people imagine being sung by classical or operatically trained singers? How about matching singers to songs? Eg just off the top of my head..... what about Jesseye Norman doing Edith and the Kingpin (OK maybe not the best example but you get the idea)? After all if Aretha can tackle Nessum Dorma then why not the other way around? Could be another tribute album in the making. Joni's melodies and subtlety were drowned. What it did is made me want to play Hejira again, so I did that and was satisfied. >> I must say that on first listen I too was disapoointed. So David, thanks for the interesting interpretations of Joni. Catgirl ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 21:43:09 -0700 From: Scott Price Subject: Lahm's Joni Tribute When I first heard about David Lahm's project "Jazz Takes on Joni Mitchell" I was intrigued. How could Joni's songs be adapted by jazz musicians, I wondered. How would they capture the feeling and the mood of Joni's songs? Is it possible to convey the stories she tells through her lyrics by using only instrumental passages? And finally, how would the players express her themes of travelling, contemplation, relationships, and duality. Some of the answers become immediately apparent upon listening to the album...others are a bit more subtle. Just as Joni has never shied away from expanding her repertoire by using somewhat avant-garde sounds and techniques, David Lahm and his assembled cast of world-class musicians are not afraid to offer their own interpretations of Ms. Mitchell's compositions. His "takes" are adventurous and complex. I'm still intrigued. The album begins with a lively rendition of the up-tempo "Solid Love." Lahm skillfully captures the joy and whimsy that was evident in Joni's original version. And the players manage to keep the arrangement feeling loose and spontaneous, further adding to the happiness. "Song for Sharon," a personal favorite of mine, has been criticized by some for its repetitious melody and sparse arrangement but Lahm's version swings the mood back and forth a bit, effectively capturing the duality of Sharon, who chose to have "a family and a farm," and Joni, who chose a musician's life on the road. The vibraphone seemed like an odd choice to me but it is played so smoothly and gently by David Friedman that it all blends quite nicely. The crown jewel of this album, IMO, is "Edith and the Kingpin." Lahm quickly builds an undercurrent of drama and tension with his arrangement, which is beautifully set with Randy Brecker's fluglehorn carrying the melody. This piece transformed me right into a dark smoky nightclub, the scene of Joni's original. Brecker's sultry notes seem melancholic one moment, and bright the next. Must be that yin and yang thing again.... :-) "Blue Motel Room" is probably the "truest" to the original Joni track on this CD, which is only natural given the jazz bent of Joni's version. I was surprised that Lahm eschewed the piano for an organ, but the tenor sax and harmonica interact beautifully on this cut and really carry the day. I'd like to commend Mr. Lahm, if you're still on the JMDL, for your insight to create and complete the project, your artistry and interpretive talent which is evident throughout, and your courage. It must have been with at least a slight bit of trepidation that you put this album out for consumption, and analysis, by this group of Joni fanatics, some of whom, myself included, follow her every word and guitar strum. Rather than finding you "blasphemous," I'm grateful to you for providing me all these new colors and visions of Joni's music. "Jazz Takes on Joni Mitchell" is bold yet laid-back. It's traditional jazz and then it's modern fusion. It sounds like Joni and sometimes it doesn't. But most of all, it's a tribute to her brilliance, done with style and panache.
