I can't wait to see it. You all know how she loves to tell stories! Catgirl...getting the VCR ready and buying some high quality tapes! wooooohooooo! I soooo hope the guy wasn't funnin" ya. But I couldn't see how Joni could possibly sneak in an audience attending taping, without a JMDLer finding out about it. (and ya know each of us would squeal like a pig with that kind of news!) Was there enough left off the PWWAM video that could be aired for a VH-1 storytellers? I do hope you're right though, Catgirl! I'd personally rather see Joni do a storytellers than go to the next concert, cuz even if my memory someday goes south, I'd still have the tape!!!!! Penny >> Joni had agreed to do a Storytellers and also an interview with Charlie Rose. After she finished her tour with the Atlanta concert, she cancelled her plans for both of those. I'm not saying they were not rescheduled, but like Penny I find it difficult to believe that she would have recorded a Storytellers without Wally B. being informed of it, or at least someone in our vast network of the JMDL knowing about it. Alas, Jeff was not in tonight and so since we were in the neighborhood I suggested guess where. Finally got the whole experience and it was very wonderful. Owner Michele Lamy seated us and was very warm - like an old friend. The food was beyond incredible - everything beyond fresh and/or garden grown - just regular meat, potatoes and veggies but prepared in that perfect French way that makes it the best meal you've ever had. The desserts were indescribably fantastic but I did not indulge after the huge portions of dinner. The best part of all was I accidently discovered the meaning of "Les Deux" - yes there are two cafes! Behind the house is another concrete building which is connected by a walkway past the kitchen. There was a curtain draped over the door and inside was like another world. All candlelit with wood-paneled walls, big brown leather chairs, huge bouquets of violet daisys and candles, candles everywhere. There was a big leather bar with several people smoking away (yes indoors!) and a shiny ebony grand piano and small stage off to the right. I felt like I entered some magical Paris nightclub from the 1920s. This place is truly special and I never wanted to leave. SoCal and visiting JMDL'ers we must plan a night there! I, like Debbe discovered Joni in 1969 with the Clouds album. I was 17. I'm ashamed to say that I didn't discover her next until 1971 when Blue came out. June to be exact. By September of 1971 I was a Joni aficionada! I was living on Cape Cod in Provincetown and the Crown and Anchor Hotel was the center of town! (Crown and anchor me or let me sail away) When I heard her first album nothing existed for me in this world. I am SO serious! To get down to this business of which album is best, my heart belongs to Song to a Seagull, BUT, For the Roses, IMHO, far surpasses Hejira, no matter how yo u pronounce it. Never was there a more perfect, (how do you say) Melding? of lyric and melody! And especially coming one year after Blue?! Who would have thunk that anyone, even Joni, could top herself?! When Hejira came along, I have to admit, I was disappointed. I loved the lyrics, of course, but I found it bland. It's just not one of my favorite Joni albums. I just don't know what all the fuss is about between these two albums. Anyway, I want every Tape Tree that's out there! Please advise, (someone) I'm a little confused about the procedure. I was looking through one of Leonards sites and in an interview he said this: INT: How much connection do you feel with Dylan's music, or with others, like Joni Mitchell, for example? Whose music is closest to you now...? LC: Well, like the Talmud says, there's good wine in every generation. We have a particular feeling for the music of our own generation and usually the songs we courted to are the songs that stay with us all our life as being the heavy ones. The singers of my own period, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Ray Charles, all those singers have crossed over the generations. But we have a special kind of feeling for the singers that we use to make love to. One song that I found on his site that I think might refer to Joni is as follows Joan of Arc Now the flames they followed Joan of Arc as she came riding through the dark; no moon to keep her armour bright, no man to get her through this very smoky night. She said, "I'm tired of the war, I want the kind of work I had before, a wedding dress or something white to wear upon my swollen appetite." Well, I'm glad to hear you talk this way, you know I've watched you riding every day and something in me yearns to win such a cold and lonesome heroine. "And who are you?" she sternly spoke to the one beneath the smoke. "Why, I'm fire," he replied, "And I love your solitude, I love your pride." "Then fire, make your body cold, I'm going to give you mine to hold," saying this she climbed inside to be his one, to be his only bride. And deep into his fiery heart he took the dust of Joan of Arc, and high above the wedding guests he hung the ashes of her wedding dress. It was deep into his fiery heart he took the dust of Joan of Arc, and then she clearly understood if he was fire, oh then she must be wood. I saw her wince, I saw her cry, I saw the glory in her eye. Myself I long for love and light, but must it come so cruel, and oh so bright? "Oh yeah, that (puff-puff) ... Dave Geffen was, well I don't know quite how to say it, you know, trying to rip me off there for a long time ... (puff-puff). They both got (understandably) very emotional while relating this story - it's obvious they both understand how close they came to killing themselves, John more than MacKenzie, since I don't think she was doing the really hard stuff (H, etc.). The video is a fascinating glimpse of the personalities in the group. John Phillips was in tears when he was telling the story of Cass' funeral - saying he was so distraught, he actually pounded on the casket! And listening to Michelle Phillips talk about the group, and her "ousting" (for sleeping with John Dennehy, and Gene Clark, among others!) is very enlightening! I think there's perhaps a little ill-feeling still left there! Anyway, the video is called "The Mamas & the Papas - Straight Shooter" if anyone wants to check it out. It goes right back to the early days, before they got together, and finishes with the latest iteration of the group with Scott MacKenzie, John Phillips, MacKenzie Phillips and Spanky MacFarlane! It's worth a look! Helen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 09:47:29 +0900 (JST) From: Manno Toshikazu Subject: JM on "WOW WOW" Hi all the JM fans! I saw JM live yesterday. (but csrambled screen) My guess is not true. It's a S&L complete edition. In the rest of time, the host introduced JM, about her music , her painting , etc. To tell the truth, JM is not so popular in Japan. Of course, many fans are there. I hope she become more popular than now. She is on the frong cover with her face next to a guitar and she is wearing a hat. The disc inside has the same picture on it. The sound quality of the CD is not very good. I would give it a C-, or lower :(. It is still nice to have as a collector item and for 6 bucks you can't beat it although I only paid 4.00 at Ross Department store. Keep looking gang, I am sure there are more little goodies at their of her worth finding!! :) I don't know much about Willy so anyone else out there speak up! It certainly was easy being in the company of Mark in Seattle. I felt like I had known him for years, and it was sad to say good-bye. I wish he lived locally so that we could have adventures more often. McLachlan says that the plan has always been to call it quits after three years -- though she doesn't rule out a reunion. "We are all well into our 30s, and we want to have babies," said McLachlan. "It's sort of one or the other." Just don't expect to be soothed by any lullabies with this year's Lilith lineup; they're going out louder than a tour bus full of newborns. McLachlan has eschewed her traditional roster of Joni Mitchell-inspired diary rockers like Jewel, Paula Cole and Fiona Apple. Instead, Lilith '99 will feature dominant women from diverse musical genres, including '70s rocker Chrissie Hynde, new country stars the Dixie Chicks and rapper Queen Latifah. We predict that the '99 tour will reunite in a few years. Can we suggest Take Our Daughters to Work Day? This first one concerns live performances: Someone recently mentioned on the list that they'd heard that Joni had already taped her "VH-1 Storytellers" episode. Well, I spoke to Joni's managers last week, and they told they she hasn't taped it yet, and that she is still considering when and if she'll do it. As to the "Joni's Jazz" concert coming up in NYC on July 1st, I've exchanged e-mails with the producer of this event, Danny Kapilian, and he's advised me that Joni is aware of the show and that she is quite excited about it. She will try to be there, but whether she'll perform or not has not been decided. And as someone else mentioned in their post about this event, personal concerns may interfere with her desired goal of being there. This could be quite special! Here's what I know: Central Park Summerstage - a special fundraiser event: "JONI'S JAZZ" with Eric Anderson, Joy Askew, Holly Cole, Ravi Coltrane, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross, John Kelly, Chaka Khan, PM Dawn, Vernon Reid, Duncan Sheik, Jane Siberry, and other special guests (tba). Thursday, July 1st (raindate, Friday, July 2nd), at Summerstage - tickets $10. - $30. It's the Hissing of Summerstage - a Canada Day celebration of Joni Mitchell's most adventurous period as a recording artist - from Court and Spark to Mingus. Vernon Reid leads a stellar band with a lineup of incredible guest vocalists in a one-time live performance, including the album Hejira in its entirety. - ------- There is also a very cool-sounding Joni tribute show in Sydney, Australia in just a few weeks. If you're going to be in that neck of the woods on the right day, here's more details on the event: The Best Of Joni Mitchell When: Thursday, 3 June 1999 Where: The Basement, Circular Quay Cost: $15.00 "Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone? They pave paradise and put up a parking lot" from "Big Yellow Taxi" by Joni Mitchell Written over thirty years ago by the brilliant Canadian musician, composer and artist, Joni Mitchell, these lyrics hold a message that is still relevant today. This timeless relevance of her songs is one of the reasons why they have endured from one generation to the next....and now the next. Universal themes of love, self-discovery, growth and travel are explored with arrangements that sparkle and intrigue. From the rock 'n' roll jumping beat of "Big Yellow Taxi" to the subtle prose and spine-tingling melody of "Edith and The Kingpin", the music of Joni Mitchell evokes a million different emotions and has inspired many artists. On Thursday, 3 June, there will be a unique opportunity to hear these songs and many more from the JM songbook when they are performed by ten local singer/songwriters who have in one way or another been influenced by Joni Mitchell's work. Robyne Dunn, Gemma Deacon, Juliet Obsessed, Rachel Gaudry, Karen Jacobsen, Tania Bowra, Kristen Cornwell, Louise Perryman and Rebecca Rennie will perform the best of Joni Mitchell songs taken from several of her albums including Blue, Court and Spark, Clouds, Mingus and The Hissing Of Summer Lawns among others. Accompanied by a superband that includes James Muller, Matt McMahon, Nick Sinclair and Hamish Stuart plus special guests, the night is destined to be a fabulous success and will no doubt sell out, so book early to avoid disappointment.
