Cassette tapes are great until your player eats them - which is why I gave up on tapes several years ago. My state-of-the-art Nakamichi tapedeck has gone the way of my B&O turntable, gathering dust. I haven't had the pleasure of hearing any of the tape trees because I don't listen to tapes anymore. & I don't miss the hiss & crumples of cassettes the same way I don't miss the pops & crackles of LPs.... CaTGirl has generously offered to copy DAT tape trees to CD. This will take many weeks if not months. I will send her a box of CD-Rs next week & when she painstakingly transfers the DAT to CD, I will copy the CDs & snailmail them to fellow Siquombites who send me blank CD-Rs & SASE. & ya know I wouldn't do this for anyone but Joni lovers.... E.T. NP: Fleetwood Mac, The Dance ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 May 1999 04:07:25 -0400 From: "Eric Taylor" Subject: Re: Black Crow David Lahm aptly opined: <<"Black Crow" has always been one of the most exciting JM songs for me. The consistent rhythm on the guitar has such immense energy and then the first vocal line slams in totally independent over the top of that beat. As a jazz player, I recognize the harmonic layout as a minor blues of double the usual length. The lyric is a continuous, powerful unfolding of images and mood. And I know I'm always saying this about the tracks I like best: the most amazing part is the rhythm of the vocal. Each chorus of the four is unique and they are equally strong and convincing, and of course, completely un-notatable in their freedom & subtlety. HEJIRA is one of her best works and this may be the best thing on it.>> Black Crow was the song that turned me on to Hejira. "...in a blue sky..." still sends me into a feathered world of wild dreams. While we're talking Hejira, I must say that Amelia is the most enchanting song I've ever heard - particularly the live rendition on S&L. I can't wait to hear your interpretations of Joni, David! "Jazz Takes on JM" is my next investment.... E.T. "Jazz Takes on >JM" is my next investment.... Well, I received my copy of JTOJM from work the other day and have been listening to it off and on this weekend. At first I thought that it would be like listening to the Mingus songs. While at the local "picnic in the park" the other week, I was talking with my daughter and suddenly starting humming "Dry Cleaner...." in my head. It slowly dawned on me that the music being played was the Mingus instrumental. I found it interesting that I couldn't hear it well enough to recognize it on-the-spot, but that I heard enough to kick off the "NPIMH" (now playing in my head), version. I thought that JTOJM would be a jazzy, almost Karoke-version of JM songs. My first listen was the auditory equivalent of a kid hurrying to keep up with their parents' longer strides. Headphones on, I settled stood in the kitchen tackling the dishes and the first tune kicked in. I "looked" for the spot for "We got a break!..." and the race was on. I'd follow the music, try to fit in the lyrics, miss and give up and listen. Then I'd recognize where a set of lyrics should go, try to pick up on the song from there, lose it, miss, give up and listen. So I went back to the beginning to listen to it without a Joni filter in place and boy! do I like it! Not only do I like it, but my teenager likes it as well! With my hearing loss, I find that if I look at the song listing, I can find the "Joni" in each song, if I don't, it's harder to pick up on it, (my inner ear filter isn't on), and I'm just listening to some really, really good jazz. Crisp and clean - not all muddied up with superfluous sounds. (unless, of course, they are there and I'm not hearing them!) "JTOJM" is the first bit of music I've broken down and bought in ages and I'm glad that I did. As soon as I retrieve it from my daughter's CD player, it's going back in my rotation. But personally I would welcome them. And therein lies the difference as you used the word "troops". The U.S. keeps saying we will not fight this war using ground troops yet the majority opinion of many experts and also people who have lived through war situations in other countries maintain that bombing does nothing really compared to having ground troops. Seems to me that a large NATO force of ground troops securing the area is loads more effective than just bombing a region to hell. Maybe I'm simplistic but I just don't get the concept of destroying a country in order to save it. But maybe bombing alone is a more politically safe option because American and other NATO country sons and daughters have much less risk of being killed. By troops I mean Air Force pilots, Navy personnel launching Cruise missiles, and Army border patrol & medics. Destroying Yugoslavias military infastructure by plane & ship before deciding to finally send in ground troops is indeed the safe option & seems very well-executed to me. Is that what we are doing? I thought the official policy was that we are *not* sending in ground troops. Or do you mean peace-keeping troops after Milosevic capitulates? > It would be nice if diplomacy and prayer were all that was needed to > stop genocidal maniacs. But it simply isn't. No, it isn't. But everything I see and hear (and I have CNN running constantly) sure looks like a mess to me. If there had been ground troops at the start in conjunction with the bombing of strategic targets, don't you think that we would be seeing far less refugees being killed, rounded-up, mass graves, burning and pillaging of villages, etc., at this point? There have also been many innocent civilians accidently killed in some of the bombings. Sometimes I think if you are going to commit to a fight, you have to commit all the way or you just get bogged down in a mess. > & how 'bout that Jesse Jackson? I've always loved the Rev! I thought what he accomplished was great, but many also think he was being manipulated by Milosevic to embarass Clinton. I have no opinion on it, though, and am glad he got the prisoners out. Well, various things have happened, some good, some not so good and I have now reached a point of helplessness about certain things, a feeling that I was losing my soul. I started listening to my Joni again, went to a Borders and sat reading, feeling and smelling some books (I used to love to get lost in books stores but haven't had time since kids, school, blah, blah) and -- damn it! -- resubscribed to this list. I just can't be without it any longer! Thank you all for being out there and such fun to hang around with (even if I don't always pipe up). My best to you all. In fact, many of you wrote and said that you joined in the visualization exercise I wrote about in my last memo to the homepage. Very cool! And I'm pleased to tell you that the after-effects of my recent chemotherapy treatments were not as horrendous as they were at the previous session. I had just one particularly bad day and night, and believe me, that's a major improvement over last time. My appreciation also to those of you who expressed interest or participated in the auction of Joni's painting. The winning bid was $5,000.00 and was made by a fan who's been looking to purchase a JM painting for years, even going so far as contacting her managers (back when Joni was represented by Peter Asher management), but with no luck. He is, needless to say, very pleased at winning the auction and has promised to send me a photo of himself with the painting. He's also given me permission to include the painting in the Gallery section of JM.COM, along with the other JM paintings I already have displayed there. I was finally able to connect and have a conversation with musician, David Lahm. He's a very smart and entertaining guy and I think you'll learn a great deal about him and his new album, "Jazz Takes On Joni Mitchell," by reading my interview. Our conversation has already been transcribed by the swift and gracious Susan Chaloner, and should be ready to put up on a page sometime in the next 2-3 weeks. Thanks for talking with me, David, and by the way- your album was last month's 3rd largest-selling item purchased from CDNOW.COM through a JM.COM link, right behind Joni's live video "Painting With Words And Music," and the gold disc version of "Blue." My sincere thanks to all of you who've been shopping at CDNOW.COM through the JM.COM links. With the recent release of the "Painting With Words And Music" video, and other new JM related products, the homepage account has been quite healthy. Thank you all! To make it easier to get to a particular item, I've expanded the "SHOP" page to include an image of and a link to all the recent products. Remember, if you want the homepage to get a share of your purchase, you must enter CDNOW.COM directly through one of the links on JM.COM every time you shop. One way to be certain that you're shopping in that manner is that you'll see a "Return to: JONI MITCHELL HOMPAGE" link in the upper right above the light blue line that displays the artist name on each page you go to within CDNOW.
