DJRD Bob so aptly states: <> Jericho is by far the most difficult song I've ever learned to sing. & my band had an even more difficult challenge playing it! I had to listen to it on my Walkman hundreds of times before I finally got it. Ever since I can harmonize with almost anything. If Joni ever invited me to sing with her (my dweem) Jericho would be the song I'd request. But it was Paprika Plains that taught me how to harmonize. Years after this song loosened me up enough to break into my own interpretation (her unsung lyrics from the instrumental part really helped - see insert) Joni said that it was PP which caused her to grasp "all notes resolve back to middle C" -- when confronted by Charles Mingus that her piano was out-of-tune. This is among the most important revelations I've ever realized, on many levels. Deep down it means to me that everything is equal. & this is the real meaning of aloha.... E.T. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Apr 1999 04:12:19 EDT From: CarltonCT@aol.com Subject: more on guns - NJC It's ridiculous to equate the situation in Israel with the situation in the United States. Israelis and Palestinians have been at war with each other for the last 45 years over a land dispute. Palestinians who live in Israel are not allowed to own guns or vote in Israel's elections. Guns for Israelis are not so that they can defend themselves from each other, but from Palestinians who see the Israelis as occupiers of land that is not their own. In many parts of Israel, Israelis and Palestinians live next to each other in a state of constant hostility. It's been a war zone. Marcel makes the mistake that most Libertarians do when he separates the government of the United States as being different from the people of the United States. Yes, there has always been the risk that the government would stop being "of the people, for the people and by the people" but it is "the right of the people to alter and abolish it, and to institute new government" should it ever reach that stage. It has not, and is not likely to with congressional elections held every two years and presidential elections every four. Nixon was forced to resign because he adopted the corrupt tactics of a despot above the law. The government of the United States can definitely be divided from the needs and well-being of its citizenry by powerful organizations. The National Rifle Association is *the* organization which is subverting the democratic process and rule by the people with its powerful lobby, especially since most of its members happen to be white males, many of them prosperous and influential. If the citizens of this nation were allowed to vote directly on a proposition to ban handguns and assault weapons, than those weapons would be banned. Fuck the NRA. No more dead children. DJRD For me, every Joni recording starts with the lyrics, and that is equally true for Hejira. No matter how much her musical style changes from recording to recording, the one thing I have come to be certain of is that she will write lyrics which are moving, thought-provoking and profound (and which will in some way touch me, affect my life, speak to what is happening to me at that moment). Although I do not have a new-Joni-cd ritual, I have frequently read the lyrics before listening to the music. It makes for a cool journey - how will she put this to music, what will she do with her voice, which of the songs will be the one I listen to 20 times in a row? After a thousand listens, the whole package is so indelibly in my soul, that it takes but one note to set off waves of emotion and memories. I'll never forget the first note of Amelia at the Vancouver show last Spring - the goose bumps, the tears, the awe and inspiration. Hejira is it. I thought David Lahm's comments on Hejira were interesting. I always thought that musically it was rather 'safe' compared to the bolder departure she made on HOSL. It's interesting that a lot of people on the list who say the words are secondary to them in comparison to the overall sound of the music seem to point to Hejira as their favorite. To me this says, 'Come on, you guys! Don't tell me you don't listen to the words and that they aren't as important to you as the music!' Mark in Seattle (Will he *ever* shut up with his Hejira heresy?) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Apr 1999 07:19:36 -0700 (PDT) From: Don Rowe Subject: Know Your Weapons ... (NJC) I thought I'd inject a little un-conventional viewpoint about guns of various types into the debate. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating rampant concealed-carry, nor am I Charlton Heston (I'm Larry Klein, remember?). However, I can neither escape nor deny the education of my Texas upbringing, with which comes familiarity, and hopefully, a healthy dose of respect for firearms of all types. I hope that the following, while understandably somewhat chilling, may clear up a few common misconceptions. Fact is, guns are out there, and if you want to defeat any enemy, your first step should be to understand how the enemy ticks. You will then have a tactical advantage. First of all, a gun is a tool. And like any screwdriver or wrench, different guns are designed for different purposes. Now don't jump on me, I know the ultimate purpose of any gun is to kill, but there are lots of ways in which a gun can do that, some more efficient than others for given situations. That's just the facts. Unfortunately, the way guns are being sold, legally and/or otherwise, leans heavily on the "overkill" side. Imagine going to your local hardware store and telling the clerk that you want to hang a few pictures up in your apartment -- the guy disappears behind the counter and comes back with a jack-hammer. "Here's just what you need," he says. You'd think this guy was crazy, right? So why do people nod their heads knowingly and tell the dealer at a gun show, "You're right, this AK-47 is just what I need for home defense." Like it makes perfect sense ... In reality, an assault rifle is a lousy weapon for home defense. You're much better off with a basic 12-guage pump shotgun -- no need for accuracy, their noise is almost as effective a weapon as the shells they fire, and shotgun pellets don't riccochet. If you hunt, you've probably already got one ... so there's one less gun you need to buy. But is a dealer going to ask some guy looking at an assault rifle, "Home defense? Have you got a shotgun?" Don't hold your breath. This same scenario could be drawn for semi-automatic handguns, mini-Macs/Uzis and all the other hosts of oversold weapons. I would humbly submit that if you could adequately educate people about the guns they already have, you'd make a big dent in firearm proliferation. Easier perhaps, than an attempt to repeal 2nd amendment. Don Rowe _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The movie deals with a young super yuppie couple who get pregnant (she's a TV producer, he's an actor/co-host of the show she produces) and after having the baby encounter extreme stress in trying to juggle their hyper-careers, their marriage, and their parental responsibilities. I won't give any of it away, but parental priorities and easy access to handguns both come into play; I thought the film kind of reinforced some of the same issues we've been wrestling with here this week. [I don't think] They're ..going to fix it up Too easy" But that hasn't stopped me from hoping. And I'm still on track to get my certification to teach math in secondary schools. "All this talk" has just made me see they need my help *more*! Ok, so there is some optimism in this cynical soul after all. I just can't be down when I'm finally getting my Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics in one week. It's only taken me 31 years! Yes, this is also true for the Hootie and the Blowfish members. They took the very sound financial advice of putting every $60 out of $100 they made in the bank. When interviewed about it, they quipped, "Hey, what if Cracked Rear View is all there is?" That honesty and savvy gave me a renewed respect for them. Agreement on this, > expressed in Wednesday's statement in Pristina, signals the beginning of a > substantive peace process, whose aim is to define a broad autonomy on > the principle of equality of the people and the ethnic communities. Cynical, as always. However, it is interesting that suddenly the "peace talk" prevails, whereas earlier such words were used as "fight til death"; 2nd vietnam for NATO etc. etc. The question for NATO is whether we really have sufficient means to put pressure on the Belgrade regime. Milosevic doesn't care about his people. He doesn't even have to, since the air strikes have led to even greater support for him. Milosevic owes his political rise to Kosovo; he came into power, because he promised the Serb minority there to "protect" them against the Kosovar Albanians. Once Kosovo is "gone" (i.e. under international control) his failure will become obvious to the Serbs, which very likely will lead to his elimination. This may explain his perseverance: If Milosevic is dead when he gives up Kosovo, he won't, unless the air strikes pose the same, or greater, threat to him. Nobody knows if or when that is the case. Tomorrow? Next week? Next month? Are we prepared to go all the way and bomb Yugoslavia back into the stone age? Isn't this the same tactics which the Serbs applied when they shelled Sarajewo? Is it O.K. for us to resort to the same means as Serbian terrorists? I must admit that I'm totally unsure and insecure about what is right and what is wrong. It is obvious that Milosevich and his people are criminals who commit horrible atrocities. But the only effective way to stop these would be to send ground troops into Kosovo and drive the Serb forces out (and also the Serbian civilians -- they're not going to stay there when the Albanians return). Which we don't, for a number of good and not-so good reasons. I've been telling myself all along that we're mainly hitting the Serb army and that the other targets were selected because of their important auxiliary function and the bad weather in Kosovo. I'm not so sure anymore. Yet I also realize that any hesitation on our side will be interpreted by the Serbian leadership as weakness and encouragement for continued mass killings and deportations. I only know one thing: We must avoid to become Milosevichs ourselves. **** Warning Sign ***** Today, German television discovered that our defense minister Rudolf Scharping blatantly lied to the public -- by literally making up a Serbian massacre for his own propaganda purposes. He showed pictures of an old incident that OSCE and the KLA unanimously had judged as a shootout between the KLA and Serb police forces -- no civilian deaths involved. Let's hope there is one tiny bit of responsibility left within Milosevich and his people so he's going to agree to some face-saving compromise. Otherwise, we'll be caught in an unsolvable dilemma.
