After a few drinks a lawyer I've worked with forever and some others were talking about possibly putting together some kind of upscale talent show sometime because our firm is unusually filled with an abundance of people who are brilliant and talented musicians and vocalists outside of work, including several of the lawyers and others who are on the professional level. This particular lawyer has an undergraduate degree from a music conservatory in piano. He is a very formidable lawyer and has very high and exacting standards. I mentioned that I was hoping to start up with a vocal coach recommended to me by another lawyer who is also a jazz singer and he asked me about the songs I used to write a zillion years ago. What kind of style was my music - Country? Folk? The only way I could describe it was "kinda emulating early Joni Mitchell." At the mention of her name, he got this amazing look in his eyes and I felt like my stock with him had suddenly soared 1000%. "Jooonnniiii Mitcccheellll", he said, savoring every syllable, and speaking in a hushed and reverent tone. When he finally recovered he gazed sharply at me and asked in a challenging, interrogative tone, "Well can you sing "Twisted"? I laughed and said "of course not, not well at least, but Joni can." Everyone around us now wanted to know about the song. He waxed on an on about it and said it was incredible but that hardly anyone had the ability to sing it well except Joni. Geez, I hope he doesn't join the list - I don't want to combine work and my "oasis" ya know? With personal responsibilty, we accept that our thoughts and feelings and behaviour is our responsibilty. Does this extend to understanding that we all have a role to play in the lives of others? It seems to me that the more postive outlook we have to ourselves and others, we add to the good in the world. The more negative stuff(judgment, intolerance, rascism, homophobia, abuse etc) we put oput, the more we contribute to the evil in the world. Like a dropping a pebble into water-the ripples go and on. It is quite possible that just a nasty word to a person teetering on the edge can actually send them over it. So I think we all affect eachother and I really do think that how we are affects everyone else-even if they are at the other end of the world. bw colin - -- CARLY SIMON DISCUSSION LIST http://www.ethericcats.demon.co.uk/ethericcats/index.html TANTRA’S/ETHERIC PERSIANS AND HIMALAYANS http://www.ethericcats.demon.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Apr 1999 08:41:10 EDT From: RMuRocks@aol.com Subject: Re: (NJC) LOCAL REPORT-COLORADO AFTERMATH In a message dated 4/24/99 6:36:27 AM Central Daylight Time, MDESTE1@aol.com writes: << "I guess yesterday they just decided they weren't going to take anymore crap and they got back," Veik said. >> Hi all! Of course, all the artists have given permission to have their live songs on the CD, and since the CD is not available commercially, I thought I would offer to "tree" it for anybody who may be interested in any of these artists or folk music in general. The quality is very good, as they're all in the radio station studio you hear live music with no audience interference. The artists & songs are: 1. Peter Case "Crroked Mile" 2. Bap Kennedy with 6 String Drag "Long Time A Comin'" 3. The Derailers "California Angel" 4. Fred Eaglesmith "White Trash" 5. James McMurtry "Peter Pan" 6. Jim Lauderdale "Whisper" 7. A student was suspended yesterday for writing > on the overhead projector "us 15, them 0". There was a report on our local news this morning that a school was considering the banning not only of black trenchcoats, but of all black clothing in general. There is also some buzz about kids in this school making threats similar to the ones Bob cited. I'm wondering if some of this is just teenage bravura coming from these kids in the face of something they can't express their true feelings about. I think banning all black clothing is going a bit overboard. I agree that this tragic incident is not anything to joke about but I wonder just how much precaution is too much. Seems to me that dictating modes of dress could have the opposite effect to curtailing anti-social behavior. The individuals in question just might feel thwarted and angry enough to take their rebellion to the next level. I'm not a parent and I'm not a teacher so I don't really know the answer. I'd like to hear what some of the parents and teachers on the list think about this. Most everybody has had very informative and interesting comments. When I logged on this morning my first reaction was 'Oh God, can't we drop this? Is there no getting away from it even here?' and then I got to reading and am now coming around to the realization that the discussion here is helping me process it. Thanks to all who are continuing to contribute to this thread. Mark in Seattle PS I would also be interested in hearing the comments of some of our list members who are 18 or younger. She had a visible golden glow radiating around her. When people are glowing they always seem to appear 10-20 years younger than their age. After the first taping night some of us met her outside in the dark with only a few building lights on. She still glowed. I was inches from her face for a few seconds (she seems to have a habit, mentioned here by others who've met her, of getting right up in your face when she speaks with you) and I did do a quick scan for wrinkles, thinking her make-up was miraculous that night. I truly did not see any. However, there are all kinds of new-fangled ways to eliminate wrinkles these days without surgery, so while she may be able to technically say she has not had a facelift, she may have had laser treatments, botox or collagen injections, or, ahem, as some suggested, a (don't try this at home, kids) base coat of Preparation H before the make-up was applied. ;-) Kakki >> Girl, You are so lucky to have met her *face to face*! (the movie "The Siege" gives an appropriate mind picture of what that insanity would be like in modern times) you should not wish this right away, regardless of circumstances, anymore than you should wish away your right to vote! b) lobby? no, I don't think so... if/when a society comes to the point that they are bringing their social problems, problems with their children to the government for solution, as pessimistic (and poetic) don implies, it is already too late! that is not the proper place or function of government in the American republic, but of the family and, more specifically, of the parents! I am just shy of a half century old... when I was a child divorce was rare and I addressed my father as sir and did what I was told and, in the context of family interaction I was taught values and morals of self respect and personal responsibility intended to make me a thriving, contributing member of society. today, as I consider the horror of these two children and the insanity of their actions, my mind cries out 'where were their parents??? where the hell were their parents as they were growing capable of such evil???' and then I remember... I remember my teen years and 'up the establishment' and how we were gonna change the world... and now we ARE 'the establishment', 'free' of those old values and morals and the 'world' is definitely changed, for these two were from us... our grandchildren, so to speak... no, my friends, it is much too late for lobbying! One day a small opening appeared, he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force it's body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther. So the man decided to help the butterfly, he took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly. What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to to get through the tiny opening were nature's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved it's freedom from the cocoon. Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we went through our life without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been. And we could never fly. _________________________________________________________ >> - --part1_ac628ed.24538fc9_boundary Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Disposition: inline Return-Path: Received: from rly-yb02.mx.aol.com (rly-yb02.mail.aol.com [172.18.146.2]) by air-yb05.mx.aol.com (v59.4) with SMTP; Sat, 24 Apr 1999 13:20:38 -0400 Received: from onelist.com (pop.onelist.com [209.207.164.227]) by rly-yb02.mx.aol.com (8.8.8/8.8.5/AOL-4.0.0) with SMTP id NAA25473 for ; Sat, 24 Apr 1999 13:20:38 -0400 (EDT) Received: (qmail 28909 invoked by alias); 24 Apr 1999 16:20:28 -0000 Received: (qmail 28874 invoked from network); 24 Apr 1999 16:20:27 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO send501.yahoomail.com) (128.11.68.68) by pop.onelist.com with SMTP; 24 Apr 1999 16:20:27 -0000 Message-ID: <19990424172711.19440.rocketmail@send501.yahoomail.com> Received: from [209.36.244.66] by web501.yahoomail.com; Sat, 24 Apr 1999 10:27:11 PDT Date: Sat, 24 Apr 1999 10:27:11 -0700 (PDT) From: Layla Dymond To: toadtalk@onelist.com, "4w ." <4windschat@onelist.com> Mailing-List: list 4windschat@onelist.com; contact 4windschat-owner@onelist.com Delivered-To: mailing list 4windschat@onelist.com Precedence: bulk List-Unsubscribe: Reply-to: 4windschat@onelist.com Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Subject: [4windschat] Fwd: struggles Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: Layla Dymond STRUGGLES A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. COULD IT BE that they are peace-nic lefties ? Could it be they are politically correct people ? Teachers or government workers. I dont know but Im beginning to wonder. For all the news coverage on this massacre we knew more about Timothy McVeigh in 30 minutes after his arrest than we now know about the parents. Clinton had no problem blaming right wing talk radio 15 minutes after Oklahoma City. For all I know now they may be right wing extreemists with an arsenal in the back yard BUT it is so strange that we are being told VERY little and I wonder why. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Apr 1999 19:00:18 EDT From: TerryM2442@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni in person In a message dated 4/24/99 3:09:49 PM Eastern Daylight Time, rsax@pacifier.com writes: << Just wanted to say how much I love hearing all these first person accounts of seeing/meeting Joni from so many of you lucky ones. The address of the kids websites are [snip] Do check out these websites if you want, but just to clarify, I read in the paper yesterday that much of the media information originally printed about the boys' connections to internet groups has been since found groundless. For instance, they (the media) are now saying there may be no link between the shooters and the "trench coat" sites on the web. > Subject: (NJC) LOCAL REPORT-COLORADO AFTERMATH > > The Daily Sentinel (Grand Junction, CO) Just to clarify again: Grand Junction is on the western slope of the Rockies; Denver and its suburbs are just east of the eastern foothills, on the edge of the plains. I don't think this qualifies as a local report. The local newspaper in Littleton is the Littleton Independent. > However, something went wrong between the blue jeans and white T-shirts > of last year and Tuesday. Maybe they know they could have been better parents. Maybe America isn't all that darn violent. Maybe you and I aren't to blame, after all we pay our taxes, obey the law, mind our own business. Maybe we can forget about what happened and go watch Matrix to help us get our mind off Littleton. Maybe we are helpless, so let's get stoned. Maybe we should get rid of all the guns, then everybody can blow each other up with TNT. Maybe, just maybe it's us, we just forgot how to care.
