I put both the old and the new gold CDs in the player and compared them not only track by track but sometimes note for note. This will sound like a contradiction but here goes. I have always been of the camp that says analog vinyl is "warmer" than digital (CD) and the gold CD is even more the opposite of my old "warm" records than the "regular" CD. It's very bright, almost shrill, but sounds very true to the original, or at least how I imagine the original to be, because you would have had to have been in the studio to actually hear the original. The gold CD has greater separation of the left and right channels and the output level is boosted slightly from the Reprise-issued CD. The vocals sound extremely life-like and I was able to pick up a few nuances I hadn't noticed before. At one point I felt I could detect the slightest bit of a wavering in Joni's voice, almost as though she was "holding back from crying" during the passage. The gold CD adds a more ringing-type resonance to the guitar and dulcimer parts and you can really hear each string being strummed or picked. So while I'm not ready to give up my vinyl albums yet, I do believe that CDs, and especially this gold CD, reproduce the music more faithfully. Now, if they will only release Hejira, FTR, C&S, HOSL, DJRD, and Mingus on gold... :-) Scott ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 16:28:13 -0500 From: Michael Paz Subject: PHONE HOME Eric Wrote: " What should I title it? This is my first post after receiving the digest since I found it last October, after I fulfilled a lifelong dream and saw Joni in concert, in Chicago. I go back with Joni to when 'Clouds' came out. I originally decided to get the JMDL in hopes of having word on whenever Joni tours, so that I can see her again, and again, and again... I have patiently learned most all of the in-words and such that serve to exclude newcomers from the hip community. I have winced when other newcomers have been blasted because they asked the definition of a phrase, a word, or mentioned that they came here for more Joni content than we sometimes have. This is a forum on Joni Mitchell, and a community has formed that talks about more than music, and that is ok, but I have been offended at times by the references of late to "p.c." police and such... When hostility is offered here, I am reminded of the line, "I can't even hear the fuckin' music playing..." ('The Beat of Black Wings') I am a white middle class male and, as Frank Zappa once said, "I'm not black, but there a whole lotta times I wish I could say I wasn't white." To the person who said that crime rate is higher for minorities, I suggest learn more about the topic. Minorities are arrested at a far higher rate than whites in America, and if you want facts and statistics, those can be given. Poor people are arrested more than rich. Those without clout suffer from the system. Thus: is justice "just ice?" I think Joni calls us to be aware of reality, that it matters. Joni's music has always pushed me to be more aware of life and get outside my own biases. Joni has always taught me that life is more than my own world. That said, I have often been delighted by people's various reminiscences, stories, and insights that are shared on here, and the joy that is communicated by those who are fans of the incomparable Joni Mitchell and her music, which is never static, but has continued to grow and develop... and challenge and delight. I have a non-Joni question, however. In the late 60s there was a duo called Hedge and Donna. They had several albums, once called "All the Friendly Colours." My copy of that was lost in a disastrous accident in 1977 (I did save all my Joni albums, however..."). I would love to know if someone has a copy of that they could sell, or make a copy of for me... please? Finally, a couple of points to introduce myself. I live in western Michigan, grew up in Chicago, am an ordained pastor (Lutheran church) who ministers to people ignored or shut out of the system, mostly serving in two areas now, residents in adult foster care homes, and gays and lesbians. I support my ministry by being a legal assistant, which allows me to have more freedom and not depend on others for my ministry. One of my most unusual possessions is a Chuck Mitchell 45 sent to me by his mother (Joni's former mother in law for those who do not know who Chuck is/was). Why she sent that, is a long story... save it for another time, maybe. Thank you for this space, thank you Wally for doing this, thank you JMDLers for many happy hours of reading your posts, and thank you, Joni. There was some discussion on the list awhile back (sorry I don't recall who mentioned it) that Joni has often deliberately left in some of the little glitches and flaws in her recordings. Joni has also discussed this in at least one article I've read. It seems to be part of her art not to have the final product be too "perfect". Based on that, it's conceivable that she thought the piano clicking gave a more "real time" effect. I have the same experience as Scott listening to the Gold Blue. I'm hearing nuances in this product that I've never heard before and I've heard Blue at least a hundred times over the years. There are many 'well educated' and intelligent people who are prejudiced. My own education did not encourage me to be a creative and independent thinker and to be the best me I could be. Rather it tried to teach me to conform, not to question, and to follow someone else's(church/state) moral code. i don't think things have changed much and this form of 'education' is not likely to produce less prejudiced people. I am much more educated now than when i left school at 15. Life and my own desire educated me. I did spend one year on a degree course(social sciences/psych) but left as i found that was the same-one had to conform to what was taught as fact and not question. A l;ecturere I got on very well with said to me that i had a good mind and valid views but that i must conform and give what they wanted in order to get my degree. Afterward I could do as I pleased. I think that what may work is gettting people as knowledgeable as possible about theselves and their feelings, what feels good and what doesn't etc, which would enable them to have much more empathy. The more one empathises, the less one will hurt others. Also, because of the mistaken way people think, many people require an 'enemy' in order to validate themselves. People who are perceived as different make easy enemies. bw colin ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 17:32:56 -0700 From: Leslie Mixon Subject: The First Time I was reminiscing about the first time I heard Joni. I was living in the basement of the family home in Brooklyn. My sister had moved out to marry and left behind her record collection. I was very curious about that white record with the line drawing of the pretty lady with the skirt. I listened to it and played it over and over. Soon after, I moved away from home and went to college in upstate New York. One of my housemates was a Joni freak (and I would meet many through the years and up to today) and she had "Song To A Seagull" and "Clouds." We both learned to play guitar and sing and would drink Sangria and play Joni's songs. I put down the guitar since then but continue to sing Joni's songs to this day, 26 years later. I would like to share a viewpoint about the "Ethnic Cleansing" mass killing of innocent people in Yugoslavia. I am the Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe of Peace, a gift of a sacred bundle given nineteen generations ago to my people providing guidance of teachings for assurance of Peace within our lives. The White Buffalo Calf Woman gave this gift of the Sacred Pipe providing guidance of teachings for assurance of Peace within our lives. Along with these teachings of this Sacred Pipe of Peace, has been prophecies passed down from significant people who walked their harmony. They based their lives on teachings given from sacred bundles, such as the Sacred Buffalo Calf Pipe or many other gifts of bundles and teachings from the Creator. They foretold of these times of great change, which coincide with many other Nations' archives recording their own Prophecies. The reality of the accuracy of these Prophecies which has predicted events upon Mother Earth, as well as the history of our own people, have come to pass, so we have learned to pay attention. There are foretold Prophecies of a very dark time, more significant than any other times in History. We will be at a crossroads in which a dark cloud will envelop the earth, chaos and diseases will erupt and we will witness blood from our relatives eyes. Humankind has to make a decision and have courage to make a stand for Peace, even when their relatives' minds are restrained from spiritual awareness of healing the mind. We still have a chance to choose to make a change. Mother Earth is a living spirit that clothes, feeds and nourishes all walks of life, but when fighting erupts, the land and life cease to flourish, as well as the spirit of humankind. Mother Earth needs our help! I call upon the World to Pray at once for Peace, to make your stand spiritually, you must see the ignorance of this situation in Yugoslavia will only make us blinder to our own empowerment of making a positive change for our next generations to come. Pray with me every day at 10:00 AM Central Time for a peaceful resolution to this continuing destruction of the World. You must realize this "disease of the mind" will spread even faster, if we don't take control of our behavior. I have been initiating an event called "World Peace and Prayer Day" to bring awareness of these times by uniting the world spiritually on June 21st, praying at the sacred sites, for Global Healing, this being the fourth year to the South in Costa Rica. When this day arrives, please pilgrimage to your local sacred site and continue the daily praying that has been done at the time of 10:00 AM Central Time. This is an invitation to the Serbian and Yugoslavian representatives to participate, whether it be in Costa Rica or at your own sacred place of prayer. Please begin to learn to understand the meaning of "Walking in harmony and Peace" in having the courage to transform our spiritual consciousness to love and compassion! This is the real challenge and courage in life. As one of our spiritual leaders, Black Elk once said: "One who walks a dark road is distracted, who is ruled by his senses and who lives for himself, rather than for his people". Please "Look upon your children, with their children in their arms, that they may face thewinds and walk to the day of quiet." From which there is no beginning and no ending in the Sacred Hoop of Life, I am sending you this message of Peace from my heart and the sacred altar, may our prayers for Peace be heard, may peace with you all... I absolutely remember but for me it all started with Judy Collins. I was around 12 or 13 driving across the burning Painted Desert (well, actually my parents were driving) and I heard Judy singing Both Sides Now on the radio and fell in love. It was late afternoon and the clouds in the sky were in those brilliant technicolors only seen in New Mexico. Soon I discovered that my musically gifted best friend was playing this song on guitar and piano along with Michael From Mountains. I thought Judy was my favorite artist of all time. But my friend quickly pointed out that the songs were not written by Judy but rather by Joni Mitchell. I was a little disappointed because I had never heard of this Joni Mitchell. But my friend's favorite music was all the Canadian folksingers like Gordon Lightfoot, Ian & Sylvia and Buffy Saint Marie and she had a line on the first Joni/Song to a Seagull album as soon as it was released. She played it knowingly for me and it just blew my mind completely and has ever since.
