Tonight was dance classes at the local high school and their performances. I was pleasantly surpised when the Drill Team officers danced to "Blue", but it was a version I have not heard before. It sounded like Joni then it didn't and then it did. Their was a large group of background vocals in this version. Now I have never heard Sarah McLachlan's version so maybe I could get some help on this. I liked the version and would be interested in maybe this being another version Joni did. Anyone out their can fill me in? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 23:32:38 -0400 From: dsk Subject: Re: CDs... DAVID LAHM I just bought it at HMV in Manhattan. There were 3 copies in the jazz section. Am excited to see there are two versions of Solid Love -- one of my favorites. Will listen to the CD tomorrow. Since my neighbors will be listening too, now is not the time. And as I always do when I go to the record store, I went to Joni's section in Rock/Pop, and made sure there was a copy of everything (there is, even Dog Eat Dog, made in Germany), and that no one else's CDs are in her section. Anyway, compulsive HMV Joni housekeeping aside, I also saw the gold Blue for the first time, but didn't know if it's worth $30. After reading Kakki's comment though, I'll soon be making a return trip. I love the way LOTC sounds like Joni's in the room, so to experience that directness with Blue...wow, can't hardly wait. Sarah's version of "Blue" is characterized by several vocal layers so this could indeed have been her rendition that you heard. It also features a Hammond B-3 organ which solos to open up the song, and then reverts to the background for the remainder. After several bars a piano cuts in, true to Joni's original, and you can also hear cello and electric guitar layers mixed in. Sarah lays down several backing vocal tracks, creating a multi-part harmony which spreads over a couple of octaves. My guess is that what you heard was most likely McLachlan's cover. There's LOTS of tension, but the overall effect doesn't seem sensual or sexy to me. > if I had to cast a vote for Joni's most sexy > song, I would probably go with Shades Of Scarlet Conquering. For me, the harsh sound of the line "A woman must have everything" kills the sensual feeling that's in most of the song. I hear it as a "you will pay for this" statement. > What is your choice for Joni's Most Sexy Song? My Secret Place -- her voice is incredibly seductive. Debra Shea ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 22:49:38 -0700 (PDT) From: Zapuppy@webtv.net (Rick & Penny Gibbons) Subject: A Couple of Things I was looking for Jazz Takes yesterday too, neither Sam Goody or Musicland had it, nor did they have it on their list of albums to be coming in anytime soon. Another thing, while killing time surfing around the web the other night, I found a sight listing Joni Mitchell mp3s boldly. Decided to click it on just to check it out and found it was a front for porn. Now, porn doesn't bother or disturb me. I know it's out there, I simply stay away from that sort of stuff, no big deal....to each their own. But I was PISSED that someone is using Joni to push their crap (no pun intended). I don't know, maybe I forget I don't live in Kansas with my little dog anymore. To move to another recent thread, as I don't post often, the only song that I can think of that stops me dead in my tracks, isn't one from Joni. Every single time I hear Joan Armatrading do Love and Affection that song just melts me. Can't do a thing while it's playing except sit down, close my eyes, throw my head back and can really feel, really feel, I can really feel what "connection" should be. And lastly about the new only joni list, I for one won't leave the current format. Although I don't post often precisely because I don't like the disputes that arise for something as obscure as a difference of musical tastes or when a sense of relationship and community is threatened by simple miscommunication, the lessons and enrichment of self, for me, would be greatly diminished by talking (or reading) only Joni Mitchell stuff. Boring! Topics that invite strife are dangerous for the fairly meek, like myself, to post to, so I don't share my opinion on heated subjects. I play it safe, from experience of too many tensions or ruined relationships that came out of my past (and not so past) boldness. But I enjoy the opinions of those of you who are comfortable with laying it all out for the rest of us. Bravo!.....Even if I don't agree with what you say. My hats of to Les for coming up with a solution for both camps. To end on a lighter note, I put together a tape of "power Joni" songs for a friend who doesn't know of Joni. Pleased to report she can only listen to 2 or 3 songs in one sitting because she felt so overwhelmed by Joni's "amazing depth". She stated many superlatives! I don't know about anyone else, but whenever I put a tape together to expose someone to Joni, I never have it in me to throw in some of her lighter stuff!!!
