Holy Moly, I better start resting up now ;-) I can and can't see Joni at this wild Irish brawl. Wonder if the Chieftains may join the bill? Or maybe the Euro-jimdlers are finally going to get lucky with a long-rumored Joni tour there with the Van. I hope so - I'm ready for a new flurry of concert tales. I've thought since the first listen that Man From Mars should have been the first single (though it's definitely not my favorite on the album). Not that I think it would likely have been a hit anyway, but I think it's the most accessible harmonically, melodically, and in its lyrics (so plaintive). To me it has a kind of "film noir" mood in its lush jazziness -- an immediately identifiable profile. It's a bit of a downer, but hey. Eager to read the most/least results tally. - --David ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Apr 1999 00:55:18 -0400 From: "Eric Taylor" Subject: Re: Faves/least faves Azeem picked: <> Bob noted: <> E.T chimes in: It was between How Do You Stop, Turbulent Indigo, and Boarderline for me, but Larry's base and Wayne's sax solo on the title track never ceases to blow me away! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Apr 1999 01:13:24 -0400 From: "Eric Taylor" Subject: Re: Another most/least...and hi Mia Ristan wrote: <<... Joni is one of those rare musicians who sounds better every time you hear her. I will never get tired of her music for the same reason people will never tire of Beethoven.... I think the version of Carey some people listed they don't like is from Miles Of Aisles. The LA Express just didn't know what to do with it and this reflected in Joni's stylization. Actually there is little drum playing on PP - Joni's late-70's signature. It's mainly an out-of tune piano pounding away (brilliently I must add). Are you sure you're not mistaking PP for The Tenth World? Today I was singing PP all afternoon while painting a garage door. Suddenly the line: "But when the church got though they traded their beads for bottles smashed on Railway Avenue" finally sunk in. Is she intimating that Christians drove Native Americans to drink? Don Juan's Reckless Daughter was my very favorite Joni tune for many many years. I think I played too much because now I like almost everything on the album better. Otis & Marlena has really grown on me! & Jericho makes me melt every time - by far the most difficult song I have ever learned to sing. CCOL is just not "single material" to me, and I think it is one of the weaker songs on TTT. From a marketing standpoint, I think HIH, Man from Mars, or Lead Balloon would have made great first singles from the album. Alas, they weren't, but the one time that I did hear Crazy Cries on the radio, I thought that if I wasn't a Joni freak, this song would not inspire me to run out and pick up the cd. Evian np: TTT --- yep, "Lead Balloon" woulda sounded great on the radio! ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V4 #145 ************************** There is now a JMDL tape trading list.
