Over the weekend I enjoyed both a standard-issue vinyl copy of FTR and a Nautilus half-speed mastered version of Court and Spark. While C&S is a great album artistically, the sound just wasn't as clear as For The Roses. There was an ease to the vocals. The piano's highest notes were clean, clear, and had a nearly bell-like quality. C&S on the other hand just sounded a little harsh. Hmmm...... Does it list Joni AND Van together? I hear Van is going to be in a concert in Golden Gate park in San Francisco on June 4th (I've been considering this one cuz Sons of Champlin are also appearing in San Fran that weekend!) Van is also going to be in San Diego around that time, too. Are we about to do the ticket scramble again like same time last year?! I also hear that CSNY fans are having bad luck getting advance tickets (because of the scalper machinery) and there are rumblings and grumblings of devising a fans ticket buying set-up like Dylan's. I'll never forget the looks on their faces, and the incredible praise that these die-hard classical musicians had for Joni's performance. Greetings and welcome Cathy. Since you asked ... >Did Joni's music alter anyone else's destiny? I guess that Joni's music altered my musical destiny more than anything else. I grew up in a pop music vacuum as a child, and was raised on classical. My mother, a fine pianist and teacher had me at the bench before my feet reached the pedals, and still lovingly remarks that I knew the scale before the alphabet. Of course, that also meant that for the formative years of my musical life, I was also put in the 'sheet music shackles', and never stretched out to improvise. Well, "For the Roses" changed that forever. I didn't have that album on my record player even half way through when I was running for the piano to pick out the intricate playing. This was at a time when everybody else was heavily into "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", and here I am playing only Joni. The rest, as they say, is history. From there I was off into my own compositions -- breaking all those closely and dearly held rules and regulations of the Well-Tempered Clavier. Never have looked back, and it's been pretty satisfying. Take care, and see you about on the list! When I taped the album, I put BSN on it twice... <> If you're asking for the stats, it's the frontrunner as Most fave on TTT with 5. <> I listened to this one all weekend, trying to get it to grow on me, and musically it pretty much has, except the instrumentation is SO sparse and repetitive, 60 seconds into a song I'm ready to hear the next one to pick up on a new melodic line. And lyrically, they really turn me off with a reference in EVERY song to "Niggas" and blatant and gratuitous profane/sexual lyrics. I had hoped that with Lauryn's success the rap & hip-hop world would pick up on the fact that that wasn't required. Having grown up in part on the sounds of hip-hop, that beat sometimes seems to reflect that of my own heart, much like the Stones or the Clash or Duke's Orchestra might for someone else. When I listen, I hear the slight variations and the flashes of brilliance like the live drum-and-bass line at the end of "You Got Me." <<>> Well, "nigga" is pretty much *the* colloquial term among young African-Americans for young men. Lauryn herself uses it in "Every Ghetto, Every City." I can understand your negative response to the word given its history, but "nigga" in this context is used much like "dude" used to be among young whites, or "fag" and "girlfriend" are among young gay men today (including myself.) The nigga they say and the nigga you hear are two different things, and it's not fair of anyone to expect them to call themselves by any name other than the one they choose. I know if someone tried to deny me "fag" my claws would bare; I'm sure it's not different for the Roots or most other rappers. As for the sex and profanity, we must just have different standards. I don't even notice it. I even played it at work today. Sure I was alone, but remember where I work. I certainly am not reckless with my choices. The only profanity that comes to my mind is "we knew from the start/ that things fall apart/and tend to shatter/she like "that s**t don't matter/I get home, get at her..." And that, frankly, is no more profane than I normally speak. There's plenty of profanity out there in hip-hop (and other music, too) but I think the Roots are one of the least offenders. And so many of their other lyrics are near-literary, too. <<>> Haven't heard the XTC, but I must confess that even after advocating for Beth here, I am bored bored bored by her new record. - --Michael NP: Santana, _Abraxas_ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Apr 1999 14:59:45 -0700 (PDT) From: Brian Gross Subject: Fwd:Fleadhs (Van content) This is from the other list I'm on, Eleanor McEvoy Later, Brian np: Fotheringay (Sandy Denny had a marvelous voice, didn't she?) > Source: > http://www.mtv.com/news/headlines/990330/story2.html > > 3.30.99 7:55 EST Shawn Mullins, Hootie, Cardigans, More Tapped For 1999 > Fleadh Festival > > The Guinness Fleadh festival is expanding again this year, as promoters > have announced plans to bring such artists as the Cardigans, Ben Harper, > Shawn Mullins, Van Morrison and other to four U.S. cities -- San Francisco, > Chicago, Boston and New York -- in June. > > Like the 1998 shows, which played to some 95,000 fans in concerts held in > New York, San Francisco and Chicago last summer, this year's Fleadh will > feature a rotating line-up throughout its month-long, weekend itinerary, > which kicks-off in San Francisco on June 5. > > For the third year in a row, the U.S edition of the Fleadh Festival is > being sponsored by Guinness and is (vaguely) intended to celebrate the > influence of traditional Irish songwriting and storytelling on contemporary > music. > > Additional artists are expected to be named in the coming weeks, but the > dates and tentative line-ups for this year's Fleadh festival are: > > 6/5 - San Francisco, CA @ Golden Gate Park > Featuring Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Ben Harper, the Cardigans, John Lee > Hooker, Shane MacGowan, Luka Bloom, Saw Doctors, John Prine, Dave Alvin, > John Martyn, Moxy Furious, Eleanor McEvoy, Young Dubliners, Martin Sexton, > Shana Morrison and Too Cynical to Cry. > > 6/12 - Chicago, IL @ TBA > Featuring Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, Hootie and the > Blowfish, Shawn Mullins, Steve Earle, Taj Mahal, Shane MacGowan, Luka > Bloom, Saw Doctors, John Prine, Dave Alvin, John Martyn, Moxy Furious, > Eleanor McEvoy, The Drovers, Martin Sexton, Kila, Too Cynical to Cry and > Jack Lukeman. > > 6/19 - Boston, MA @ Suffolk Down > Featuring Elvis Costello, Hootie and the Blowfish, Shawn Mullins, John Lee > Hooker, Richard Thompson, Shane MacGowan, Luka Bloom, Saw Doctors, Black > 47, Martin Sexton, Blink, Eileen Ivers Band, Tommy Makem, Liam Clancy, > Eleanor McEvoy, John Martyn, Moxy Furious, Mark Geary, Too Cynical to Cry, > Watercress and Jack Lukeman. > > 6/26 - New York City, NY @ Randall's Island > Featuring Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, Hootie and the Blowfish, Shawn > Mullins, Richard Thompson, Shane MacGowan, Luka Bloom, Saw Doctors, John > Prine, Black 47, Martin Sexton, Blink, Eileen Ivers Band, Tommy Makem, Liam > Clancy, Eleanor McEvoy, John Martyn, Moxy Furious, Mark Geary, Too Cynical > to Cry, Watercress, Jack Lukeman and Candy Butchers. > _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? The more instruments and density you add to a song, the harder it is to make each sound stand out on it's own. Also, as you say, the sound of C&S is sharper and more brash, intentionally, no doubt, to cut through better on radio. The sparseness and acousticity (?) of FTR lends itself to a nice clean sound, and whatever mistakes were made in "Blue", or tricks learned, are applied here. Greetings Joni friends, My name is Debi but I go as Catgirl...I have 7 wonderful kitties..hence the name. Joni Mitchell has been my favorite musician since I was 12, I am now 35. I play guitar and have since I was 13. Her song Ladies of the Canyon was the first song by her that I learned from a songbook made for easy guitar arranged by Mark Phillips. This song holds a special meaning to me! I followed her career and saw her in 1979 at the Mann Music center. I then saw her twice in 1983, once at the Mann and then a month later at the Merryweather in Maryland. Since the beginning I have deep respect for this women. She is beautiful, gifted, and talented beyond imagination! She is the only female performer I know that has a great vocal range, can play piano, guitar and dulcimer and write lyrics so profound and intriguing. Her guitar playing is unique and very inovative. I have all of her records up to Chalk Mark and every CD. I have most of her songbooks. A couple of years ago I got through mail order For the Roses. I have 1. Music of Joni Mitchell- songs I never even heard befor...anyone can help with these let me know.... a. Carnival in Kenora b. Jeremy c. (A) melody in your name d. Moon in the mirror e. Poor sad baby f. Straw-Flower me g. Who has seen the wind h. Winter lady Any one with a tape of any of these songs let me know. I have the sheet music for them ;) 2. Complete vol. 1 (1967-1970)- STAS, Clouds, LOTC 3. Complete vol. 2 - next 3 albums-BLUE, FTR, CAS 4. Hissings of Summer Lawns 5. Hejira 6. Night Ride Home 7. One last thing....years ago I wrote to the record company requesting info on her and they sent me a great promo shot of her (curly hair and all- of course it is framed over my computer right now) and a bunch of articles on her at the time. It might be worth trying to request that info again...hint, hint! I also have her videos... 1.Shadow and Light 2. Come in from the cold- music videos-very cool 3. Refuge of the roads 4. It truly is a fabulous version. It has a very dreamy quality to it. The arrangement is very appealing to me personally and I love the instrumentation especially the vibes (even though no one is credited with playing vibes I hear them). I also really like the bass alot. Kenny Garrett's solo on sax is really nice as well. I have a feeling Joni would like this cover. The cover of In Your Eyes is really superb and I am sure this record will be on my player often. The street date is set for May 4th according to the promo cover.
