I played them on piano for years and have also heard some of them sung by Joni thanks to the tape trees. They are all very beautiful songs. I personally think the most beautiful one is Melody In Your Name. Deb wrote: >I know we don't have the real tunings, but at least we'd have an inkling of the melodies. I think the songbook music does a good job of being very close to the original songs, from comparing it to what I've heard on the tapes. I also always wondered what they "really" were supposed to sound like, as performed by Joni. It's pretty close to what I had discerned from the songbook, although Joni, of course, does a much better performance of them than I could ever hope to ;-) Many of the songs are a little tricky to sing because they have such unusual melodies. I don't care what Joni may say about her early songs being "ingenue-ish" - I have always desperately wished that she would record them someday. Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Mar 1999 08:44:33 -0500 From: James Leahy Subject: Amelia's Extra Chord I've also noticed this "extra" chord in recent live versions of Amelia. According to my study of the song, the first three chords of the intro are: 222100 444300 555555 On the album Hejira and S&L she goes directly from the 2nd to the 3rd chord, which is a fairly difficult chord change to do quickly. Recently, however, she lingers a bit on the second chord, which makes it easier to get to the bar chord. It also changes the rhythm of the intro slightly. No new chord, just more of it! Personally, I like the older version of the intro, but admit that the newer version is easier to play. The first time I heard Tracy Chapman (on VH-1, probably), I stopped in my tracks in the livingroom to see who was on TV. I thought it was Joan! When I realized it was Tracy, I thought to myself, "How lucky for her, to have a voice so like Joan's." I made my return to the stage last night at a local club called Carrollton Station (they feature lost of acoustic acts). I was asked to host Caffine Music presents New Orleans Songwriters Night, which is a series of concerts they are doing the last Sunday of every month. I get to play a half hour set before the main songwriters of the evening. Last night I chose the music of none other than Joni Mitchell. I was also debuting my new black Roland Ready American Standard Strat (that I bought myself for my B-Day tomorrow the 30th anyways I digress) and I had a blast. My set included: Love Puts On A New Face, Amelia, Cherokee Louise, Song For Sharon, and Big Yellow Taxi. I had everyone in the club walking around singing BYT after that. My friend Tommy Malone (the subdudes & Tiny Town) was one of the featured songwriters of the night and a usual he was totally awesome. I did fairly well and I wasn't too nervous. I probably should have left Cherokee Louise for another time cause I flubbed that one a bit timing wise and I left a full verse out of Sharon, probably due to nerves, but the rest was respectable. At least I broke the ice. Now I plan to go out a few times a month and brush up my performing chops by playing open mic nights and opening spots. I am also looking actively for some players to duo or trio with me. Yippee, hey Marian, watch out I am headed to Vienna to open a show for ya! Next month at the songwriters night I am planning on performing some songs by New Orleans song writers that I like. I had a party for my B-Day last Saturday and of course had a full jam session with many of my musician friends. A great time was had by all who attended and stayed till about 4am. We took turns soloing and then forming little groups of 2, 3 or 4 instead of everybody trying to do the same ol tired blues progressions or Wild Thing, or whatever that jam sessions are reduced to (when you have so many people trying to play). Thanks for the chance to wallow in my glory. Best wishes, Michael PS Hey Wally, I am trying to center my focus for ya. The contest was managed so well last year by Beverly Wolfe that I asked her if she would like to do it again this year. Bev, unfortunately, has had a family tragedy, and that and work stresses prevent her from being able to do it again for 1999. She sincerely considered it, which I appreciate, but eventually had to turn down my request. So now we're looking for someone to run this year's contest. All entries to the Writers Contest will be sent directly to this volunteer-manager and they will help with calculating the number of votes for each entry from members of the JMDL. We haven't yet finalized the prizes for this year's contest, but I believe we'll have more than a few different and worthwhile prizes; More on this later. The rules will be posted after we've found a new assistant. If you feel that you can run this year's contest, and you want to volunteer, please contact either Les or me. Thanks!
