No, I love this technical talk, carry on. And here's a fact that most Bowie fan website hosters don't know - The crowd noise at the beginning of the title track of "Diamond Dogs" was lifted straight off the "Faces Live, Overture and Beginners" album. Listen carefully and you'll hear Rod Stewart shouting "Wehhhyyyy!" just before the track starts. I know because I had both albums at the time. It's funny because this was years before sampling of other people's records became the norm, the two records were on different labels (RCA and Mercury) and there's no mention of the Faces 'sample' in the credits on the Bowie album. Can anyone else cite similar examples of credited (or uncredited) cross-sampling of other people's music on records pre-1981? (I say 1981 as that was when record scratching and sampling by acts like Sugar Hill Gang, Grandmaster Flash and Affrica Bambatta started making the technique popular.) Out of touch here in italy as usual - What is the Kazan controversy? Open my own 24 hour store in italy? What, and get blown up by the Mafia? Hey they prefer to keep things ticking over just the same way as things always have over here. Until last month the national phone company (Telecom Italia) had the monopoly on comms here. But they've just changed the law and allowed independent phone companies to operate now as well. The biggest contender is a company called Wind. And guess what - Somebody torched the Wind offices last week! Today marks 46 times moved round the seasons for her. In addition to being known for her seminal work with the band Rufus and a distinguished solo career, she's some kind of friend to Joni and sang on DJRD. Her name, Chaka, is derived from an African word for "fire," but she was born "Yvette Marie Stevens," in English. I still dig that song "Tell Me Something Good" that Khan recorded with Rufus back in the Seventies. And way before Whitney, Chaka was "...Every Woman." That's a song I still sing unabashedly in the shower from time to time, despite its gender specificity. (It's only me, but I expect to receive a "cease and desist" order from the ASCAP, BMI, & SESAC lawyers any day now...maybe NOW, too, come to think of it. :-) Speaking of Joni collaborators, I went to see two of them in concert last week. Neil Young solo acoustic and Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers. Both were tremendous shows in very different ways. Neil played "Sugar Mountain," the song he wrote that inspired Joni to write "Circle Game." Word is that Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, a group Joni had a big hand in bringing together, will reunite and tour this summer. They have been recording a cd together, too. I've got a concert poster advertising their concert at Oakland Stadium during their last tour together in 1974. Fun fact: Joni's painting that was used on the cover of their album released that year (_So Far_) is reproduced on the poster. Tom Petty rocked the S.F. Fillmore for 7 shows. War ("What is it good for?") was the opening act the night I went. Now there's a flash from the past. The previous night Lucinda Williams opened for them, the next night he had Bo Diddley. Kudos to anyone who can identify what Joni album and/or song(s) Tom Petty contributed to. But once again: Happy birthday Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan! Thanks for the little bits of instant bliss over the years. - -Julius ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 12:21:56 +0000 (GMT) From: Howard Wright Subject: Re: Distortion on Blue, C&S ... Keep in mind they can simply come >back to the studio and redo the one verse or line where the screwup >exists. You're right to distinguish the two tapes of glitches - those that were performance "mistakes", and those that were glitches that were introduced at the mastering or manufacturing stages. The latter are pretty common with CDs but the "performance mistakes" are also fairly common - with some artists at least (haven't spotted many with Steely Dan!!!) The artists could go back and rerecord the part, but - as Joni has said several times - she has chosen not to do this on several occasions because she thought the take was so good, she wouldn't be able to equal it another time, so better to keep it, flaws and all. In Blue, the most obvious glitch is on "This Flight Tonight", in the last chorus: Starbright, YOOUU got the loving that I like ... the "you" is very distorted - but I guess Joni decided to keep it because the overall feel of the vocal take was so good. On this track there are a couple of crackles which are probably CD manufacturing artifacts. On the standard Blue CD there are crackles on the lines: "sometimes I think love is just mythical" ^^^^^^^^^^^ and in the following chorus: "starbright, you got the loving" ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I haven't heard the HDCD version, but I would guess thesecrackles are not there on that one. On a couple of other tracks, the vocals are on the limit of distortion a few times, e.g: "Needles, guns and grass" "All I really really want our love toooo do" ^^^^^^ (second repeat of this line) "I wish I had a river I could skate awaaayyyyyy on" ^^^^^^^^^^^^ (final line) With all these, the sound quality could have been better with better level control, but the emotional impact of the songs is very strong. It's not easy to decide the best balance between them, but Joni obviously decided to keep ther powerful takes, and not worry too much about the occasional distortion. Unless you read the credits, it's awfully hard to tell it's Tom Petty, and unfortunately, you can *easily* discern the voice of Billy Idol. I don't care much for this track at all. Does anyone know the history of this session? My guess is that Idol & Petty were in adjoining studios at the time and Joni thought it would be fun to include them on a song. I don't think these examples have anything to do with the recording or any kind of 'distortion' of the sound. It's Joni's singing. The emotional intensity is great but her voice swerves out of control at times on 'Blue'. Maybe she chose not to *enhance* the vocals in any way to make them sound 'better' (a relative term) but I don't think the recording is distorting them. Does emotional intensity mean that control of the voice or instrument has to be sacrificed? Personally, I don't think so. Joni has sung with much better control on other records and not sacrificed one iota of emotional honesty. As I said before, it will be interesting to hear the gold disk of 'Blue'. With some of the examples I gave it's hard to tell, but with the one above I think it's much more obvious. When she sings "You got the loving ..." the "you" is definitely distorting. I can almost see the level meters hitting red! In some of the other cases, it could be just the character of Joni's voice that gives it a "raw" edge, or it could be that the vocals were starting to distort a little, or some combination of both. But I would swear on my vinyl copy of Hejira that the vocal line above from "This Flight Tonight" is distorted, i.e the levels weren't set quite right during recording. This shouldn't detract in any way from the emotional power of the album. Who's to say that a more "cleanly" recorded take would have been better? It's the expression and power in the voice that makes it. A little unintended distortion on the vocals is a minor recording glitch, but nothing to get too worried about (unless you are Donald Fagen). I snuck into that concert after the warm up act! I had already seen Joni and band at another venue, the Capital Theatre, in Sydney the previous week. Having waited so long to see JM, the first concert was a series of mixed emotions - the venue of an old and intmate theatre was perfect but after the jazzy gorgeousness of Shadows and Light and few years earlier, JM's band was a full on rockathon that (for me) did not serve her music well (such a contrast to the great line up on Painting with Music and Words). So I gave it a second go at the Opera House the next week. Sadly the venue, glamourous as it is was entirely inappropriate. The Concert Hall is designed specifically for classical and acoustic music not 70's style rock an' roll. The sound was like listening to a scratched record through a pair of vibrating speakers, and the only pieces that really worked were the solo numbers such as For Free with piano only and the Woodstock encore with guitar only. Sad because it wrongly suggested to the less than up to date crowd that the "old stuff is best". I suppose since I got in 'for free' myself (the concert was booked out) I shouldn't have been so picky and Joni did announce at one stage that they had spent the whole day trying to get the sound right - at which point many probably felt she could have done that my ditching Larry and the boys for just one night. Still it was Joni and even a flawed Joni is better than none at all and she looked every inch the glamourous rock star with her long straight blonde hair and white trouser suit.. Later I read somewhere that for that whole world tour the net profit was something tiny like $15,000. Mmm, that rock an' roll lifestyle can be expensive. What Kazan controversy? I didn't realise there was one. I found the Oscars rather... anti climatic. I love watching the glitz and the glamour. I enjoy the spectacle and the gowns. I just found this year's abit flat. I think I was disappointed that Cate didn't win or that any Aussie's didn't! I was also non plussed by the dance debacle! It meant 'nothing' to me. I felt that it was pure fluff and that the choreographer really didn't do the music justice. The dancers just showed off their snazziest moves and ass cheeks! I also think that Celine is 'perfect' for the this particular format. I 'know' she's not everyone's favourite artist but you have to give her credit. I really think she performs well. Compared to the warble duel between Mariah and Whitney... she and Andrea were beautiful. I feel people have a tendency to just write her off without giving her credit for excelling in her chosen area. I don't particularly like her but I don't mind seeing her perform on big shows, she always does an excellent job. Chalk Mark is one of the album covers that I've got a poster of so I see the full scale of it's beauty. I LOVE Joni's look on that one. The eyes that you can see, but can't, the hat's just perfectly aged, and even though pink has never done anything for me, it just works so well together when looking at it unfolded with the sunset behind. Beautiful!!!! I would have to say this is the album cover that best reflects the mood and emotions Joni produces in me when I listen to her. Introspective, quiet, gentle, contemplative, private, calm, peaceful, seen but not known. Joni just seems to capture it all in this cover. It's almost the same type of look as Blue, but Blue looks depression riddled to me, where Chalk Mark is more of a self assured "I want to be alone, so that's just where I'm gonna be. And I'm thoroughly immersing myself in it, thank you." Love the look, love the attitude!!!!
