Don't remember a physical ailment. RR ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Mar 1999 01:35:43 -0600 From: evian Subject: blue laws (njc) Well, here in Saskatchewan, there are odd laws for drinking, store openings, etc. In Prince Albert, where I live, there was this HUGE store hours debate in '88. Stores wanted to open on Sundays, and all of the religious fanatics thought this was the first step towards damnation. Anyway, after a big debate, it was decided that stores could open whenever they wanted to. However, to this day, our malls open on Sundays from noon to 6, and half of the stores don't bother to open. Our grocery stores are open from 8 am until 10 pm, which is unusual, since in Saskatoon, grocery stores can only be open from 11-6 on Sundays. Of course, unlike the States, alcohol will probably never be sold in our grocery stores. In Saskatoon, there was also a bylaw passed so that any new adult movie store cannot open downtown -- they must open in the industrial area only. As for spitting laws, there is this HUGE debate here now. A city councillor wants to reinstate a law from 1909 to fine people for spitting on city property, such as bus shelters. Of course, people are freaking out about this, and the controversy has made the National Post. Now, people are freaking out on the councillor because they say she has given the city an image of an ugly, spit-encrusted shit-hole... which it pretty much is! ;) As for drinking laws, I think that we can actually now buy beer and wine on Sundays, but the liqour store is closed Sundays, so you have to get it from a beer and wine store. And, if anyone is interested, Saskatoon was originally a temperance community, so I have heard stories about how uptight the city was about liquor in the past. Any "Hard" liquor must be purchased at the government-run liquor stores. However, our casino is open until 4 am, so apparently, we can gamble until the cows come home any day of the week! I adore Jaco, especially on DJRD, but I think Larry is every bit as good a bass player. And I must say that Larry's base-line on the song Turbulent Indigo is his most notable contribution. Talk about depth! I just love hearing & watching Larry play on Joni's latest video. The man is brillient!
