Anyhow, I sudeenly remmbered I had another set of speakers in the cupboard. I got them out and plugged them in. I tried various different holes and settled on one pair in the main holes and one pair in the centre holes. The main pair are on brakets either side of a large window. The centrte ones are within these two, laying on the window sill. I tried various settings and then pressed the Pro Logic Enhanced button. and WOW!!!! The song I used(here's the jc) to check it all out was Slouching. Now this sounds superb! Really. I can now hear everything, like in the old days. Now I thought it was my hearing that was f**ked but no, it was the lack of Pro Logic!!! When I listen, Joni's voice comes out of the centre speakers and the backing comes out of the main ones. Sloucjing sounds so wonderful I listened to it over and over. That drumming just makes me want to swoon. No longer does it sound muffled. This is how I remeber the old vynl sounding(not that I had NRH on vynl). Clear with all the backing audible. It seems that this PL thing, separates it all out. In Virginia (including the VA suburbs of Washington, DC), stores could sell necessities only. Run out of notebook paper for homework due on Monday? Couldn't pick some up at the neighborhood drug store. Need batteries for your transistor radio? Ditto. The only non-essential I can think of that could be sold on Sunday was the newspaper, and perhaps we were lucky that it wasn't snipped of frivolous material. As I recall, entire sections of merchandise were literally under wraps on Sundays; I remember especially the beer and wine being under something (tarps? blankets? pages from the Bible?). Mainly the "we-sell-everything" drug store chains sold only meds on Sunday. Into the 60s, it wasn't unusual for grocery stores to close at something like 6 p.m. Since women were assumed to be home during the days, they presumably could do the shopping then. I'm old enough to remember that the 7-11 was called that because it was so darned convenient to be able to pick up a box of cereal or whatever at 10:50 p.m. when all the other stores that sold food items had closed hours earlier. Now it's weird as hail to find a 7-11 that isn't open 24 hours a day. The photographs give a sense of exploration and vastness, and while the photo of Joni is in sharp focus a lot of the other figures are in soft focus, leaving a bit of ambiguity or anonymity to the scene. I was pleased to read the credits way back when the album first came out to discover that the male figure skater was Toller Cranston, one of the most creative and expressive skaters of all time, and to Joni, a fellow Canadian. To me it signified a merger of two artists. Here was Joni, a peerless singer-songwriter, and Cranston, a world-class athlete, living in two very different worlds, yet able to appreciate each other's work, collaborating for an album cover. I got home a little late and missed the first 15 minutes someone tell me Paul didn't play anything solo! I was hoping he would do My Love or Maybe I'm Amazed. I was pretty weepy thru the whole show. I thought Sprngsteen did an awesome job and it was nice of him to recognize som many people that he worked with in the past. Paul as usual looked great, but I have never thought of him as a great public speaker and he sounded a little dopey as usual. His daughter is cute and what was up with blurring out her tits? I swear the censors really blow my mind at what is allowed to slip by and what isn't. Anyways, I felt so emotional when Paul was on, knowing how much he must be missing Linda. He did blow everyone else on the stage as far as Rock n Roll singers go. What a voice! Other high points were D'Angelo and Clapton covering Mayfield WOW that was incredible. Please let them record together and I would love an mp3 of there performance. Riatt did a wonderful tribute to the awesome Charles Brown. The Staple were really fun and Lauren did a nice job inducting them. Neil was really funny inducting Paul too. I enjoyed almost the whole show except for Billy Joel who seemed like he was in outer space and not in very good voice unfortunatly. I hear it is suppose to replay tonight at 8pm central time. Anyways I'm really late for work now. (whether by chance - which given how Pro Logic works is quite believable - - or design) I've noticed a lot of CDs, that are too old to have been deliberately so encoded, sound very much more spacious when played back through a ProLogic system. No offense to Randy Remote but I'll state flatly - it's on the tape. Saying that there are touches of distortion does not mean that I hate it, okay Randy? It means I'm an anal retentive audiophile. I think it's pretty pointless to compare Jaco and pretty much anybody else. Not because he's dead but because he was a visionary & a genius and almost anybody else is going to come up short. Larry does a good job trying to fill in some of Jaco's lines in concert and I've always liked 'Flat Tires'. I think the imagery is witty and the song has a funkiness to it that you don't hear in Joni's music very often. As for Jaco, let's just be thankful that one visionary genius hooked up with another visionary genius and produced 'Hejira', 'DJRD', 'Mingus' & 'Shadows & Light'. And let's give Mr. Klein a break. I have already said that the standard issue of C&S sucks. John has not replied as to which one he was listening to. Also I pointed out that the piano on "Down To You" is slightly distorted, but you really have to listen with headphones to hear that. As to the horns on "Car On A Hill" which I believe John did mention in his original post, I hear them as being intentionally affected (effected?) to sound like that. Not a new thing, check out "Savoy Truffle" by The Beatles for a similar treatment. I still must defend the first rate engineering on Joni's records. (vljc) Just a small crowd gathered at Borders Books in Ann Arbor, where Jonatha performed an acoustic set of mainly cuts off her new LIVE CD. It was a last minute run to A.A., after my daughter spotted a notice on her web page that she would be performing tonight. JB did a "Joni" to the audience, in that she spewed some real anger towards the music machinery; she has started her own record company so she doesn't have to deal with the crap anymore. She leered a bit about Jewel and Alanis (what are they whining about?), etc. etc., but all in good humor at least. She was great! Her guitar playing is very impressive with all open tunings and interesting strumming patterns. Her voice was tip top. Afterward, my daughter dragged me to get in line for autographs and I mentioned to her that I'd learned open tunings from studying Joni. "JONI...Ah, yes...JONI!" Her face brightened. She also raved about Lauryn Hill. Marian, I'll send you some tuning info she shared with me, which she admitted to copping from Bruce Cockburn.
