Mom had a malignancy in her colon in 1967 and the doctors were not optimistic for her recovery, however, Mother was optimistic, and she lived a wonderful fruitful life helping others less fortunate than herself till October 1996 when she died of a heart attack. She had a friend that lived 20 years after being told he had months to live. So you see love, hope, prayer, and focus on the positive can prevail. I pray that Ric will have the strength to carry on and that it be a contagious strength for his wife and children as well. I wish you all peace and much love. She plays the game, too. She's allowed to grouse all she > wants, and I love her madly. But she ain't perfect, boys and girls . . She definitely ain't. This can also be emphasized by comparing her behavior towards the music business with Laura Nyro's. IMO it reveals that Joni indeed is somewhat self-contradictive here. Probably even more than Joni, Laura was always uncompromising about her art. And even though she knew this meant limited success and exclusion from super-star status, she whole-heartedly accepted these consequences. For her, music was above everything and big success probably only would have distracted her from what she wanted to do. That's also one of the things for which I deeply admire her. I remember one of Chili's controversial statements. He questioned, if I remember it correctly, that people so badly wanted to meet Joni and get some kind of relic ("Yuk!"). This sure sparked some angry reactions... Now I wouldn't put it as strongly as he did. Sure it would be nice to meet Joni one day, and all the people who met her and shared their experiences with us are truly blessed. Nevertheless, if it still would be possible to meet Laura Nyro, I really would have died to meet her and talk to her. I often look at photos of Laura's, and not just because of her early death, she's got something of a saint for me. I think she's one of the most interestingly-looking persons I've ever seen. She's got that special look, showing tremendous depth of personality, inner strength and self-reliance. Joni, thank goodness, is still alive, but she's also human -- all too human! O.K., enough cofessions for today! She was *hilarious* and had some choice words to say about Jewell and the Lilith Fair crowd. She also shredded Whitney & Mariah and a few others. On the subject of that chameleon-of- a-material-girl, Madonna, she had this to say: 'I think she's turning Japanese I think she's turning Japanese I really think so! The bitch is running out of continents!' (That was Sandra's comment, not mine!) But I'm willing to bet that is not Roberta Flack's perspective on it. At least from a financial standpoint, Roberta Flack profited more from the release of the Fugees single than if they had NOT done the song. Paul I If Roberta Flack did not write the song--which I don't think she did--then she wouldn't made a penny from the Fugees doing it. The writers of the song (and the publishers) would make a tidy pile of dough from it. Roberta made her money when *she* sang it. Or Joni's brand of wry irony. On an finely crafted, complex album that begins with commentary on the social system and the environment, reflects on heroin addiction and an empty life, offers personal introspection about relationships and family ties, and observes how far successful artists stray from their roots and how little appreciated are even the great ones, here's this bit of "fluff": (Okay, David, you want an AM single? Fine ...) Oh honey you turn me on I'm a radio I'm a country station I'm a little bit corny I'm a wildwood flower Waving for you I'm a broadcasting tower Waving for you [I used to hear "wailing" here] And I'm sending you out This signal here I hope you can pick it up Loud and clear ..................................... It's been dirty for dirty Down the line But you know I come when you whistle When you're loving and kind But if you've got too many doubts If there's no good reception for me Then tune me out, 'cause honey Who needs the static It hurts the head And you wind up cracking And the day goes dismal From "Breakfast Barney" To the sign-off prayer What a sorry face you get to wear Seems more like a brilliant, calculated response to me.
