At least from a financial standpoint, Roberta Flack profited more from the release of the Fugees single than if they had NOT done the song. I've been a fan of Amy for quite some time and I'm familiar with all of her music and her musical style... it made me feel really good, not only that she recorded it but also that she stayed so faithful to the original which, in my mind, was a nice tribute to Joni. pat NP - House Of Love - A. I always think of and talk about her refusal to take a standard recording contract and staying on the road for so long until she wrote her own contract, or as much of it as she could, anyway... the reason I always go back to that is because it shows how she feels about her art... it shows that she is principled... *and* it also shows that she is very, very stubborn! she paid her dues and stood her ground and never kissed the butts of the recording industry... and look what she got. in two years nobody will remember jewel except as the oddity she is... in fifty years people will still be playing Joni Mitchell! pat NP - Built For Comfort - Howlin' Wolf http://members.wbs.net/homepages/b/a/d/badwolff.html Angelfire for your free web-based e-mail. http://www.angelfire.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Mar 1999 06:58:57 +0000 From: "Deb Messling" Subject: RE: NJC - Sam Cooke and other covers > Lauryn has spoken in interviews > of her appreciation of the clear literalism of Roberta's songs ("The > First Time Ever I Saw Your Face") Must point out that "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is not a Roberta Flack song, but a Ewan MacColl song. IMO it's much more beautiful left in the folk idiom than popified the way Flack did it. Priscella Herdman does a lovely version. Bert Jansch and Mary Hopkin did a splendid version. It went well, but the tumor is malignant and the doctors are giving Judy (his wife) 1 to 3 years. It's just about as bad as it could be... He is exhausted, and is going to tell his older daughter tonight. He said to say hi to everyone, and to tell you all how kind everyone has been. Hello List- This just came over my fax machine! In Hits Magazine March 12, 1999 in a section called Jamz, Caught in The Act Ego-Stroking Photos of Industry Geeks. There is a picture of Joni with Stevie and Herbie. Under the photo the caption reads: AND THEN THERE'S THE SCOURGE OF TRADE RAGS: Three of the most gifted people in the music world-(l-r) Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, and Joni Mitchell-are seen contemplating the fact that the course of the entire record industry is determined by an eight-year-old in Dubuque with Attention Deficit Disorder. "I know the answer-more consolidation!" blurted Hancock, and the others heartily agreed. In further breaking news, according to bassist Chris Thomas who worked with Brian Blade (Chris is working in town with my friend drummer and Tower Records manager, Kevin Aucoin on another friends new album), Brian will be going out on the road with none other than SEAL. Keep a look out for that tour. Wow! "Bridges" on Blue Note Records. On the album, the songstress extraordinaire does a beautiful version of Joni's song "River". Reeves proudly points out that she has loved the song since Joni Mitchell first recorded it on her classic "Blue" album in the early 70's. "I wore the grooves out on that record. When I lived in Los Angeles, I use to cry when Joni sang the line *I'm going to make a lot of money and quit this crazy scene*. That song is about being selfish and sad at same time. As a singer married to what I do, I can relate to that sense of having to wrestle with the choices you make for your career". The song features Kenny Garrett on soprano saxophone. His sinous lines are reminiscent of the Joni Mitchell/Wayne Shorter collaborations on her albums. "I love that sound and that's why I asked Kenny to play" says Reeves. "In many ways what we're doing is a tribute to Joni's ideas. Kenny's tone on the soprano is so close to the human voice. When we play together it's real open and free. His notes enhance the poetry of the songs". Be sure to check this version out - It's amazing! (And Liz, how did you find me?) The CD is actually on a legitimate label-Arkadia Jazz-and by the end of March, should be in major stores throughout the country and on hundreds of jazz radio stations. I promised the "Coyote" story as an example of unpredictable reactions: I went on a semi-free-form radio station to be interviewed and suggested (silly me) that they play that cut, along with Joni's great version on SHADOWS & LIGHT. Did my hostess have any musical questions or comments about my astute transformation of the work into jazz? She did not! Her interest was solely whether the actor Peter Coyote was the Coyote referred to in the song. "He was part of that scene," she assured us all, "I'm sure it's about him!" Last night was better. I was playing piano in a diner and the 28-year-old waitress said "You played 'Ladies of the Canyon', right? " So I know Joni has made her point, over and over, not just to me, but to people who weren't even born when I started listening. Ciao for now.
