I was drooling scrolling through the catalog listing. The website is http://www.spinnindisc.com Survived my trip to "Lost Wage$" and had enough left over for cab fare for the ride home from the airport. Had a very neat night of music Wednesday seeing the Blues Brothers and the legendary Buddy Guy perform at the House of Blues located in the new Mandalay Bay Hotel (VERY pretty place). The Blues Brothers are much better than one would expect live and did a rousing "Money" and "Viva Las Vegas" for their encore. Dylan played Tuesday night. The biggest surprise was the lounge act in the casino there - The Grass Roots, yes....the originals! They drew a SRO crowd both nights with many in the audience recalling and singing along to every song. Kinda a trip. He's a pretty good songwriter (and a fine singer) himself, on the basis of his two solo albums (Bedtime Stories and Triage) and before that an album he did with David Ricketts under the banner David and David, called Boomtown, which was a bit of a classic. I think both of them worked on Sheryl Crow's first album (I know Baerwald did), but since then nada. "Hello Mary" from Bedtime Stories is a truly great running-into-an-old-flame-song, on a par with Human League's "Louise". I have a lot of discs which truthfully could've used some editing as bands take advantage of the expanded options the CD offers by putting on everything but the kitchen sink! It doesn't bother me so much that Joni says what she has to say and is out in 38-40 mins. Like James Brown would say "Can we hit it and quit?!" Back in my "buy the vinyl and put it on a 90-minute tape" days, most every record fit on one side of the tape, occassionally, a song would splill onto the flip side (Hejira being one) because the record ran over 45 mins. And then there was "Blood on the Tracks", way over 45 minutes...and not a second of filler on it! Anyway, my point is I don't mind the "shortness" of a record as much as I do an artist who feels they *have* to put 60-70 mins. out there with varying quality... There's a very interesting article in the new Q magazine on this very subject, a lot of which I agree with. One obvious point is that with the increased running time of CDs, artistes feel compelled to fill up all the space, often resulting in substandard material being included, or the songs being dragged out interminably (BOTH of which happened on the last Oasis album!). 45 minutes or so is actually a pretty good length for an album, especially if it's reasonably taut and (obviously) the songs are good. Along with TTT, Mercury Rev's "Deserter's Songs" was one of my favourite albums of last year, and that too is less than 45 minutes long. The old stage saying is "Always leave them wanting more". It applies to films even more, but that's a whole other discussion... What makes this CD special is that the label put Joni's demo version on the CD instead of the version performed by the listed artist, Kristen Vigard. They recalled and destroyed the CD's before they could be sold as they did not have the rights to publish this demo and, of course, it is not what is listed on the CD! It is a beautiful version of "Man From Mars". I have been told by a very special person that this version is better than the one on TTT because the emotion is more "raw". I had not thought of her style of piano and guitar playing in comparison to Debussy's style of playing but, rather, to the musical compositions themselves where I hear startling similiarties between the two. While Debussy may be a musical cousin to the more delicate Chopin, I think Debussy has many pieces which come across quite boldly, especially the more eccentric and dissonant ones. >With her guitar playing though, she does tend to create a more atmospheric >effect. Because of her tunings and playing style, chords merge into one >another, and there are more delicate touches ... (at least for some of her >guitar songs). This is an interesting observation and a good point as far as their respective methods of creating the atmosphere of the piece. >I'm imagining some of the tracks from her first album now - songs like >Dawntreader and I Had a King - if the guitar part was played note for note >on the piano, I think it would end up sounding *very* Debussy-esque! This is my point of reference in that I was not clever enough years ago to figure out Joni's guitar tunings and so settled for the easier route of playing most all of her songs on piano. When you listen to them played note by note to "weird minor chord" on the piano they sound quite classical and very much "Debussy-esque." Many of the songs from STAS, Clouds and FTR are like that and "Paprika Plains" is another standout example, at least to my ears. This thread has sparked a personal revelation to me in that Debussy was the only classical artist I really loved to hear and preferred to plunk out on piano as a young child. I must have always had an affinity for those pretty and unusual "weird minor chords" and that's probably why I flipped for Joni's musical sound in the beginning.
