I think Joni fell in love with the chords of this tune, and as much as this song is the signature piece of the album, I think she wanted to present it pretty much as the interesting guitar composition ........She 's been quoted as saying the music comes first...... I do it the same way -- I find chords I like, they suggest a tune, and the tune suggests a mood and a few key phrases..." Yes, I agree. The "bones" come first - the chord progressions that create the mood - and eventually a melody and with a few words come through (the meat on the bones) - and before you know it, you've given birth to a song (but there is a lot of labour involved!) TIGER BONES, is one of my favourite tracks on TTT. I definitely do not think it is filler!!!! This statement just floored me. What's in Chaka Khan's CD collection these day...... and the first name out her mouth...... "Joni Mitchell, everything to Miles Davis, Brandy".....further on in the answer.. "anything with integrity, I can tell.... good music, the music that has honesty, that's coming from a place where someone cares and has integrity." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Mar 1999 15:40:16 +1100 From: "Cupit, Greg" Subject: Tiger Bones as filler John Mitchell wrote: Has anyone noticed that both TI & TTT both clock in under 45 minutes. Which is pretty rare for a CD these days. I certainly felt Tiger Bones was filler. It's not as if it's some form of reprise version with some variations. I was also disappointed on first listening when the CD finished as early as it did. Not the best value for money time wise. It makes me want to hear an entire instrumental Joni album. I think she included it for fans who like to sing along. Perhaps it is her gift to the JMDL. In a recent interview Joni said that she only includes 10 songs per album because record companies only pay for 10 songs per album. She wrote the song Night Ride Home while recording CMIARS. Can anyone imagine Night Ride Home as track 11 on that album? The Woman is wise.... He's the male > voice on "Nothing Can Be Done. > Well hell, call me stupid yet again, I always swore the voice on Nothing Can Be Done, one of my fave Joni songs, was Marc Cohn, and where I got this idea, I dunno. Also, thanks Bob for reminding me of David + David. I loved Welcome to the Boomtown. Damn, I would kill to find that cd now! And, I didn't know that one of the Davids was married to Toni Childs!!! I only have one Toni cd, "House of Hope", but it is amazing!!! I bought it after I caught the video for "I've got to go now" or whatever the hell its called... one of those songs that you hear once and have to run out and buy. Also, I love the song "Next to you"... again, I am not even sure if this is the title, I am too lazy to go check! Anyway, anyone else a Toni fan, and has she done anything lately? No, let me rephrase that... song interpretation would have been good if he would have said "this song came out during this time in her life, and yada yada yada, I am speculating that it is about blah blah blah." Basically, what Hinton has done is throw Joni's life in a chapter or two and then just spent the rest of his time going on and on about what he thinks the songs are about, and those stupid personal comments get so damn annoying! Even though many of you would disagree, I would have liked a bio that went chronologically through her life and then had commentary on the albums as they came out, and how they related to her life, relationships, etc. Yes, I know, I know, we have been through this before that we can't pigeonhole Joni and her writing as autobiography, but my research interest is life writing, so I am interested in how life experience contributes to art. Anyway, those of you who haven't bought the Hinton book, read the interviews for free on jm.com!
