There are singers I don't care about but there are those who love them with such excruciating passion that mystifies me. (I won't mention them... I might get crucified from the die-hards). But then some people might be equally mystified to learn who I am crazy about. Anyway, I was happy because: Shirley Horn won the Grammy (at last!) for best jazz vocal for her tribute album to Miles Davis (I REMEMBER MILES) besting Dianne Reeves. Also, I am happy because soprano Renee Fleming won for vocal classical category for her THE BEAUTIFUL VOICE which is the greatest understatement. I immediately looked for glowing reviews of that album in the Net and I came across a very interesting find. Renee recommends the following singers as her favorite or an influence, namely: Sarah Vaughan - How Long Has This Been Going On? Ella Fitzgerald - First Lady of Song (3-CD) Shirley Horn - You Won't Forget Me Maria Callas - La Divina and Joni Mitchell - Hejira with the following entry: "For some three decades, Joni Mitchell has been an astonishingly original and prolific singer/songwriter. Her rich harmonic vocabulary, her freely swooping vocal writing and her intimate, evocative lyrics have influenced several generations of popular musicians. HEJIRA was released in 1976 when Mitchell was experimenting with jazz (her album of Charles Mingus' music was to follow several years later). The album features the intricate bass playing of Jaco Pastorius, blending in beautifully with Mitchell's spare acoustic guitar playing. All of the songs are poetic meditations on physical and spiritual journey." Fleming sang jazz before she really went into the classical repertoire and it shows on the singers she idolized. To be with such legends as Ella, Maria, Sarah and Shirley, amount to Joni's genius of the lyrical and the instrumental use of voice. She is a Utah singer/songwriter, mainly folk with a country influence. Her debut cd is great! Just thought I'd ask this list, as I am unsure whether her music is available outside of Utah at present. Regarding Joni wedding music: Night Ride Home would be my pick (at an outdoor wedding of course, in summer). Very lovely songs. These three women love to sing together and recorded this album for the sheer joy of it. Still haven't completed digested it, but they do an interesting cover of Neil's After The Goldrush. Country with brains, indeed. And Rosanne Cash - her album Interiors is one of my favs of this genre. And ooooo the contents. Great pictures and the tapes are so much fun. When I started this email it was the upstairs choir performing Peoples Parties and now we are doing Amelia. I appreciate Lisa's CD as well. I am going to give her a call manana. I want to let her know the jukebox schedule for the next few months. Thanx again for all the great stuff. When I hear Cotton Avenue, though, I sure do want to go out dancing. Must be that line "that's where I'm going to take myself tonight with a spit shine on my dancing shoes" ... that line and its delivery is just infectious! If I had a place like that to go, I'd just have to go there, you know? I like all of the anthologies for different reasons. Before they came out I had heard bootlegs (and have some copies on tape) of the so called Swinging Pig releases out of Germany. All of this stuff is so amazing because they are alternate versions of the songs mostly in a very raw state. I love tracing the development of songs and it's great to be able to listen to just Paul singing Obladi Oblada on acoustic guitar or George singing avery early version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps (with a verse that didn't make the final cut on the White Album). I also have the videos which I taped off TV and bought the store version as well. Buy it all! Hope you hit the lotto. I found that using Joni's version is a great way to help teach the poem. All the students I have had are VERY reluctant when poetry rolls around, and just kind of close their eyes and hope it goes away. Anyway, I was being evaluated for my teaching by my supervising professor last year, and I was nervous as hell because it was my first year as a TA, and I just knew that they wouldn't contribute to the conversation, so basically just to kill time I brought in the cd to show how a poem can be set to music and manipulated, blah blah blah... basically, I was looking for a time killer, and, damn, they actually got into it! It really helped out! Sigh... if only someone would put out a rap maxi-single for "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock", I wouldn't have to do any planning this week...
