(at the reception for the "first dance" number, not at the ceremony). It ought to be moderately danceable, but Raised on Robbery probably won't work. I was thinking of Jericho, but "I'll TRY to keep myself..." doesn't quite work. When the minister asks "will you?" you aren't supposed to say, "I'll try." I've been leaning toward "The Man I Love," although the lyric is about hope rather than fulfillment. You can dance to it, though. Now this I gotta see - Send me a Real Player = video clip of it please - What are you, some kind of hippy? ;-) >> Don't really fit the hippy profile, but I'm a veritable whirling dervish on the dance floor - if I'm in the right mood and they're playing the right music. Some Joni songs make me want to get on the good foot, for sure. Trust me. ("Free Man in Paris" is another one that's caused severe rug damage at my place.) But forget about me floating you a video stream...these "revolutions" won't be televised. ;-) <> I'm certain they fear the worst! Sometimes I bop around to "Dry Cleaner From Des Moines" in my underwear. It feels so good, but I'm sure it's not "pretty" to the uninitiated. Last night, through the crack in my curtains, they coulda seen me slow dancing with a date to "A Case of You" as we watched the movie Practical Magic on DVD (it's on the soundtrack). I shudder to think how many goat dances I would've missed out on had it not been for the SIQUOMB one setting the scene...but I digress. - -Julius ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 18:41:20 EST From: LRFye@aol.com Subject: Re: Jonis Most Dancable Song Lisa wrote: > it would have to be "Shiny Toys" first followd by "You Dream Flat Tires", > "Underneath The Streetlight","You're So Square" , "Wild Things Run Fast" > and "Solid Love"(All from WTRF which I feel is a very dancable CD) and I agree with Lisa's choices, except to point out that Shiny Toys is from DED, which also a dancable CD. In fact, one of the things that Joni's 80s albums have in common is their dancability. (Or is that danceability?) Maybe they're just not mellow enough for their critics? Hey y'all, I don't recall exactly who's in charge of planning for the CO Joni Fest (Leslie?), but I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what weekend it is. I'm hoping it does not conflict with the 30th anniversary festival planned for Woodstock Weekend (which would be August 13-15 this year). It is really difficult to explain why I think Joni+Larry does not equal Joni because it is something which is so visceral. It basically does not sound like 100% Joni to me - it sounds more like Joni modified by Larry rather than enhanced by Larry. No blame, no shame - just my own personal listening experience of it. Ironic that Philip or anyone would get to this after those musics that derive from such. I never dug the J Line because she plopped it in with no regard for the significance of the music; no study; not even responsive to the great grooves they're putting down. This aside from ethical issues such as: credit? pay the musicians? tell me how it's not cultural imperialism. I say give back to the cultures you take from, with honor, study, and bucks. btw I saw them on a WOMAD appearance and besides the outrageous drumming there's great dancing while playing! We did similar things when doing Shona drumming (of Zimbabwe). tr ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 21:12:12 -0500 (EST) From: David Wright Subject: Re: RDC time sig (NJC) michaelb@coolgold.com.au writes: > > For something more offbeat have a listen to Mother on "Syncronicity" > by the Police,it is in 7/8 ....weird ... written by the drummer > Stewart Copeland Just a minor point: I believe "Mother" was by guitarist Andy Summers (Stewart's contribution being "Miss Gradenko"). Great album! On the subject, Sting uses some unusual meters in his solo albums, especially the most recent two, also. "I Hung My Head," from Mercury Falling, for example, is in 9/8, but grouped irregularly as 4+5 (rather than 3+3+3). And PJ Harvey's first two albums have many songs in five. - --David ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 21:21:23 -0500 (EST) From: David Wright Subject: Re: Joni's Most Danceable Song For me it has to be the percussion groove on "Dreamland"...Joni (subito): "It's a long long way from Canada" -- bass drum: BOOM.... - --David ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 21:56:24 EST From: LRFye@aol.com Subject: Re: JC-ish: Tattoos are like tattoos Kate T. wrote: > Here's a question: If you were to get a Joni-type tattoo, what would it > be? I just never seem to catch up! Worst concert: Alice in Chains/Suicidal Tendencies... Layne (the lead singer) was so drugged that he sang out of key, completely missed his cue and came in at the chorus and generally stood there supporting himself with the microphone! The low light of this concert was when the drummer threw a tantrum and kicked his drumkit apart and stalked off stage leaving the crowd and band (apart from Layne who had no idea anyway!) completely mystified! Best Concert: Suicidal Tendencies on the same night. They helped open for Alice in Chains and their 25min set was incredible... it just made Alice in Chains look even worse! Also, Faith No More who blew me away and I did my first and last crowd surf at...! Too many sweating, prepubescent lads with wandering hands! Loudest Concert: Ministry. They made me ears ring for three days afterwards. I'm positive I've damaged my hearing! They were just a wall of distortion and I couldn't appreciate any of their songs as my ears hurt too much. Funniest concert: Danzig. The man just strutted his stuff up and down the stage and I was stuck beside some mini skirted tizz who kept telling her boyfriend that she would sleep with Glenn Danzig (the singer) to which he kept replying that Glenn wasn't too big and that he could take him out! (Glenn Danzig bodybuilds!) All night back and forth until I wanted to pull my hair out and flay myself, rather than listen to their prattling! I don't know about the rest of you, but the bands I see happen to have a high proportion of under sexed and hormonal young lads who can't resist squeezing, pinching and rubbing themselves all over your unprotected back! The worst was at Rollins... where some guy undid my top then waved at me! It doesn't matter what you look like but as long as you have the right bits!
