I wouldn't normally pass this on to the list but I just received this
virus for the second time and I wanted to warn all of you about it.
After you've open this virus it replicates itself by automatically
sending an e-mail following each of the emails you send to the same
people, with the same subject. These files include a copy of the
HAPPY99.exe file which shows some pretty fireworks when you open it.
If you were mailed an e-mail that had a attachment "HAPPY99.EXE" DO NOT
RUN IT. Delete it and remove it from your Trash File. If you did run it,
please see below or go to :
http://members.tripod.com/docsmiley/happy99.htm
How to get rid of the Happy99 virus
(last updated on February 19, 1999 - 11:50 AM
Eastern)
If you have already run Happy99.exe, to get rid of it, print out this
page and follow the instructions. I have tried to make it as simple as
possible so that even if you are computer illiterate, you can safely
clean your system of the virus. However, please follow these steps
carefully and in order. WARNING - Failure to follow instructions
exactly may cause problems in accessing the internet from your
computer! If you want a more detailed explanation of the virus, check
out Happy99 . For a VERY detailed explanation, including directions
in both English and Japanese to disinfect your system, go toTechnical
Explanation.
1) Open your Windows\System folder and find the following files:
ska (or ska.exe in MS-DOS)
ska.dll
2) Delete these files. If you cannot find them, be sure that you go
to "View" on the menu across the top of the screen. Select "options".
Then click on "View all files". That should allow you to see the files.
3) Delete all messages in your email program with the Happy99.exe
attachment. Be sure to check your trash folder and empty the trash
also. There is another file - "liste.ska" that can be found in the
systems folder. You can open it with Notepad and read a list of email
addresses. You may have sent the virus to people at those addresses.
When you are done cleaning the virus from your system, you may want to
notify those people. You can delete the file after printing the list or
copying it and pasting into a Notepad file.
4) You will also need to replace the file "Wsock32.dll". To do this,
restart your computer in MS-DOS mode.
5) Once it has restarted, you should see "C:\WINDOWS>" on the screen.
6) Type in "cd system" and press "enter" or "return". You should see
C:\SYSTEM>" on
the screen.
7) Type in "copy wsock32.ska wsock32.dll" and press "enter" or
"return".
8) When asked if you want to overwrite wsock32.dll, type "y" for yes.
9) Type in "exit" and press "enter" or "return".
That should take care of the Happy99 virus. HOWEVER - unless you are
running Antivirus software with an updated data file, you could easily
catch this virus again or another one. If you already have the
software, you should update your data files at least monthly. If you do
not have antivirus software, I suggest that you go to www.mcafee.com and
download the FREE evaluation version of the ir software.
Be sure to also download all updated data files, including the one for
the Happy99 virus.Just follow the instructions to install and update the
program. You can contact their customer service if you have problems
with this. McAfee's program is considered to be one of the best. And
the updates are free!

OH Ditto! I think I was at that show...Music for Films/SayIT? that series
she did ...And the xmas show at Town Hall. I just weep when she sings the
Valley or Hockey, or anything....... I hold Jane in almost as high esteem as I
do Joni. I am proud to say I spotted her (under a huge furry hat)in a Barnes
& Noble in NYC a couple years back and chatted with her at some length about
Sheeba (her record Co) and the Joseph Cornell book I was buying at the time.
SHe is just too charming. I am curious if it has been discussed on this list
the similarities between Jonis "Blue" and Janes first album (ie Marco Polo
:is to: Carey; In the Blue light :is to: Blue/California...)
I'mm so enjoying this list.....delurking a little more each day........

Good golly, what a wonderful memory -- my dad had a reel-to-reel of
Sergio Mendez & Brazil '66, the first album and incarnation of the band,
and I absolutely LOVED that music! Does anyone have an
album/cassette/(gasp)CD of this? Most of the songs had titles in
Portugese (which I can't remember), but one of the songs was the
Beatles' "Daytripper," or was it "Fool on a Hill"? It's been so long.
I'd be willing to pay/trade for a copy of this. No store has been able
to order it for me, on Herb's label, A&M.

Here's the scoop from McAfee Online at :
http://beta.nai.com/public/datafiles/valerts/vinfo/w32ska.htm
AVERT - A Division of NAI Labs
Virus Name: W32/Ska (a.k.a. Happy99.exe)
This page last updated 2/1/99
W32/Ska is a worm that was first posted to several newsgroups and
has been reported
to several of the AVERT Labs locations worldwide. When this worm
is run it displays a
message "Happy New Year 1999!!" and displays "fireworks" graphics.
The posting on the
newsgroups has lead to its propagation. It can also spread on its
own, as it can
attached itself to a mail message and be sent unknowingly by a
user. Because of this
attribute it is also considered to be a worm.
AVERT cautions all users who may receive the attachment via email
to simply delete
the mail and the attachment.
The worm infects a system via email delivery and arrives as an
attachment called
Happy99.EXE. It is sent unknowingly by a user. When the program is
run it deploys its
payload displaying fireworks on the users monitor.
Note: At this time no destructive payload has been discovered.
When the Happy.EXE is run it copies itself to Windows\System
folder under the name
SKA.EXE. It then extracts, from within itself, a DLL called
SKA.DLL into the
Windows\System folder if one does not already exist.
Note: Though the SKA.EXE file file is a copy of the original it
does not run as the
Happy.EXE files does, so it does not copy itself again, nor does
it display the fireworks
on the users monitor.
The worm then checks for the existence of WSOCK32.SKA in the
Windows\System
folder, if it does not exist and a the file WSOCK32.DLL does
exist, it copies the
WSOCK32.DLL to WSOCK32.SKA.
The worm then creates the registry entry -
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\Ska.exe
="Ska.exe"
- which will execute SKA.EXE the next time the system is
restarted. When this happens
the worm patches WSOCK32.DLL and adds hooks to the exported functions
EnumProtocolsW and WSAAsyncGetProtocolByName.
The patched code calls two exported functions in SKA.DLL called
mail and news, these
functions allow the worm to attach itself to SMTP e-mail and also
to any postings to
newsgroups the user makes.
Cleaning To eliminate the worm from your system, a 'stand alone
utility' is available
(RMSKA). (it assures clean handline of SKA.EXE deletion & rename
of WSOCK32.SKA to
WSOCK32.DLL,

I've looked everywhere for the very first album, but I think the one with
Daytripper/Fool on the Hill is a later album. I may have a tape of that
somewhere and will let you know. I have the Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 "Look
Around" album that is also stellar. It was the album that got me nuts over
Brazilian music as a teenager. It also has several songs in Portugese along
with the Beatles "With A Little Help From My Friends". It took a musician
boyfriend in high school to introduce me to it (playing in his car 8-track,
of course). One of the top 5 concerts I ever attended was in 1987 at the
Greek Theater with Herb Alpert & TJ Brass with Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66
and also Lani Hall, one of Sergio's original girl singers and also Alpert's
wife. She has a gorgeous voice and, in my opinion, was a huge part of the
beauty in the albums. She also has made some solo albums if you like that
sound.

Plastic Ono Band, Amnesty International Conspiracy of Hope Concert 1996.
I was forth row center at the Meadowlands when Yoko hit the stage halfway
through the 12 hour show following Joan Baez and Peter, Paul & Mary.
It was so loud that I had to stuff kleenex in my ears. When Yoko finished
playing four shrieking songs I swear she looked right at me and said: "You
can take the cotton out of your ears now."
Later that night Joni was the surprise guest (replacing Peter Townsend right
before U2) and some drunk fucks hit her with water-balloons while playing
The Three Great Stimulants. It was just Joni, Larry & Vinnie doing a
striped-down version and MAN you should have heard how powerfully she
delivered the rest of that song! I was so transfixed that I forget what
other songs she played. Can anyone help refresh my memory? It's all a big
blur until Bono came out and hit us with a firehose. Between that and the
mad dash of U2 fans I was pushed back ten rows.
This was by far my favorite concert.
A close second was Pink Floyd in 1974 (half the show was classics like Be
Careful With That Ax Eugene and half was Dark Side of The Moon in it's
entirety). They opened the roof for Act Two and shot off fireworks during
Breath In The Air. It was indeed breathtaking.....
The Moody Blues also blew me away in 1974 to the point that I purchased all
their albums the next day.
And my first concert was not too shabby either: Carol King & James Taylor in
1970! All I remember now is them singing You've Got a Friend together.
Also I was at the concert when the Buckingham Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac
(Pittsburgh 1974). The Buckingham Nicks opened, and when half of Fleetwood's
band didn't show, they apologized and jammed together for two hours. I will
never forget that concert although I will always miss the haunting sound
they had on Bare Trees.

Michael,
Stevie's version of the song 'Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer'
can be found on the CD "LOVE SONGS ~ 20 CLASSIC HITS"
Tamla #MCD09050MD
A selection of love songs gleaned from his deleted 1977 anthology
Looking Back. Although the obligitory well-known love songs are
included ("For Once in My Life," "My Cherie Amour," "Yester-Me,
Yester-You, Yesterday"), there are a couple of surprises included:
the wonderful "Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer" and the original
version of "Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do),"
which was hit-covered by Aretha Franklin in 1974.
-- John Lowe, ALL-MUSIC GUIDE
this CD may be out-of-print, but check around.
out-of-print doesn't mean can't-be-found.
you'll also find the song 'Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer'
on the CD "Greatest Hits: Volume 2"
Album Notes:
Producers include: Stevie Wonder, H. Cosby, D. Hunter, H. Fuqua,
J. Bristol. All tracks have been digitally remastered from the
original master tapes using 20-bit technology. In 1961, discovered
by Ronnie White of the Miracles, he was signed by Berry Gordy of
Motown Records. His voice broke in 1964 but he re-emerged in 1965
with a worldwide hit, 'Uptight (Everything's Alright)'. His contract
expired in 1971 and Wonder financed two experimental albums, playing
almost all instruments. He pioneered the synthesizer's use in black
music, and addressed racial and spiritual questions. Where I'm
Coming From and Music Of My Mind put him at the forefront of black
music. Talking Book (1972) provided hits with 'Superstition' and
'You Are The Sunshine Of My Life'. Innervisions (1973) consolidated
his success while Talking Book gave the hits, 'Living For The City'
and 'Higher Ground'. Songs In The Key Of Life (1976), perhaps his
most ambitious album, displayed musical virtuosity. The highly
successful Hotter Than July (1980) included a tribute to
Dr. Martin Luther King, 'Happy Birthday', and a study in reggae,
'Masterblaster (Jamming)'. After Stevie Wonder's Original Musiquarium
I (1982), Wonder composed The Woman In Red (1984). It included his
biggest-selling single, 'I Just Called To Say I Love You'.
In Square Circle (1985) and Characters (1987) returned to accessible
melody. Wonder's image as a statesman of black music, and champion
of black rights, was boosted by his successful campaign in the 80s to
mark the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King with a national holiday.
Album Review: Rolling Stone (1/6/72, p.70) - "... A lot of albums of
this sort become dull because of repitition of certain hit formulas.
But Stevie's versatility pulls him through. As a result, this
GREATEST HITS album is one of the most relaxing, sophisticated--and
euphoric--albums ever released..."
do yourself a favor,
try and locate a copy of "LOVE SONGS ~ 20 CLASSIC HITS". it's the better
collection and contains 10-of-the-12 songs found on "Greatest Hits Vol. 2"
hope this helps.
for now ~ take care,
