Legend in Your Own Time is a song my wife use to cover and I remember being very impressed that she learned it by ear even though the chord structure is a little complex. Freda has a wonderful voice and she was quite a guitar player in her time, but alas she says she has "put away childish things" to raise her own. The first records I ever had were Ricky Nelson albums and then Beatle records. The first record I ever bought with my own cash was Something New by the Beatles. The first CD's I bought were (all at once) Bad by Michael Jackson, Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, and Fragile by Yes. The first time I smoked pot I was 12 or 13 and it scared the shit out of me. I didn't do it again till I went way for freshman year of high school ( and then there was the acid, but that's another thread). I lost my virginity when I was 12 to my little sisters nanny (who was a live in in our home and only about 19) while my parents were out at a party. I told my dad about it the next day and he was quite pleased (he thought I was gay at the time). My first true love was when I was 18 and she (Caroline) was 14. She was from Tunbridge Wells (sp?) in England, and I still think about her to this day. I have volumes of stuff that I wrote for her. I don't think any other relationship I ever had was quite like that one. Sigh! My first Joni experience was in Paris in 1971, thanks to Julie a musician from NYC area. I wrote a piece on this for the Lyric Book contest, that is now in the gallery on Wally's site. And pretty shocking for its time. Very feminist stuff for that >era. Also considered pretty shocking at the time (1971) was the cover picture on Carly's self-titled debut album, which contains that song. She's sitting on a settee in a long dress, with an inscrutable expression -- and her knees spread apart about as far as possible! And two albums later, on the cover of "No Secrets", she is braless with her nipples plainly visible. (Actually, the provocative aspect of this seems a little calculated to me now, especially compared to the seaside innocence of Joni's bare butt on For The Roses -- which, after all, wasn't on the cover!) Vicki Harris mentioned "Miss Otis Regrets" by Libby Titus. I'm not familiar with the song, or with Libby Titus -- but what's Libby's connection with Carly Simon? On Carly's "Another Passenger" LP, there is a song written by Carly called "Libby" and Libby Titus sings backup on another cut. Colin, can you illuminate? I do happen to love Carly Simon, and have all her albums in one form or other (mostly vinyl). And I've always felt kind of defensive about it -- especially with other Joni fans, who I realize are far more likely to be into Joan Baez or Laura Nyro. I guess, as someone else said, Carly is just underrated as an album artist. My favorites are "Playing Possum" and "Coming Around Again". I think her best material is the stuff co-written with Jacob Brackman. And I really do think she bears comparison with our Joni -- as long as you understand that it's like comparing apples and oranges. Also, I'd like to know more about the mutual feelings between Joni and Carly, if indeed there are any. What about the story of Joni -- bristling at being labeled a female singer-songwriter -- saying something like, "Well, who are my peers? Not Carly Simon, that's for sure." If Joni supposedly thinks so highly of Carly, then how could she make such a scornful and dismissive remark about her? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Feb 1999 13:17:46 -0500 From: Marsha Subject: Re: Cooking up our best recipes / hopefully vegetarian! That's such a brilliant summary of the loss of innocence and the onset of world-weariness that most of us go through. I also like "Summer's Coming Around Again" from "Anticipation". Overall (and sorry Colin!), she's not in the top bracket of singer-songwriters. Lucinda Williams, however, is the BUSINESS! Various listers have put very good cases for "Car Wheels...", and for me too it was the album of the year. Regardless of how long it took to record, the crispness and cleanness of the sound is stunning, and the songs are very special. "Right In Time" is one of the most erotic songs I've heard in years. The matter-of-fact way she sings "I take off my watch and my earrrings/ My bracelets and everything" is just perfect. Azeem in London, looking forward to the Radio 2 prog about Joni. I think I'm gonna put the squeeze on my local radio station to play some Dusty Springfield for me. I think the only song I know is Son Of A Preacher Man. There's a program on my pet station called Women Of Note - a concept Joni would not like, but it's such a great program so I don't care what Joni says. If you haven't already, give 'Coming Around Again', 'Another Passenger' or 'Hello Big Man' a try. I also highly recommend 'Spoiled Girl', 'Playing Possum' and 'Boys in the Trees'. 'No Secrets' was the first one I bought so I have a special fondness for it. But Carly has grown a lot since then. 'Life Is Eternal' from 'Have You Seen Me Lately' was like a mantra for me after the loss of my beloved partner 6 years ago. 'Healing' is an essential part of my catalog...not only is it inspired and gorgeous, but a true listening experience can actually bring healing effects. When I'm down either physically or mentally, I listen for therapy. Rundgren is the only artist I respect and admire as much as Ms. Mitchell. May I recommend to the members of this choir that (if they haven't stayed in touch with Todd's repertoire as I have) you take advantage of the Japanese remixed reissues of Todd's albums...and pick up his work from the 80's and 90's (whether they're reissues of not). Don't hesitate to grab copies of Utopia's "Oblivion" and "POV", and equally important are Todd's "Nearly Human", "2nd Wind", and "The Individualist". The later is an enhanced disc with alot of fun stuff for those with a cd rom. I started out with Joni when C&S was released. Things really got cooking when MOA came out, and I started buying her previous releases to hear the original versions of the songs she did live. My desert island Joni recording would be "For The Roses". Although I cherish them all, FTR is a triumph. Happy listening. One of the primary reasons for my appreciation and respect for the talent of JM lies within (what I perceive as) her basic foundation of emotional sensitivity and concern about many situations and experiences in life. To be honest, I am not aware of her attitude regarding non-human animals or the plight that exists for them in their interactions with people. Acknowledging that some of the messages recently posted with comment on the death of animals via "road kills" were probably sent with humorous intent, I simply needed to make note that I personally find nothing comical about such tragic events. Far too often I see evidence of such road kills (and injuries), seemingly without any emotional connection from individuals involved. Reflecting on this situation, I wondered if anyone is aware of Joni's attitude towards animals? I can't recall hearing lyrics or comments specifically related to such thoughts. She did one in Washington for list member and animal rights loobiest Bill Dollinger. He brought me the poster when he visited FL last winter and I have it hanging in my office at the University. You may get lucky and find one cheaper, but mostly, they will be hard to play, not stay in tune, etc. I strongly suggest you take someone who already plays with you when you buy. They will be able to tell you how comfortable it is, and notice any problems. The salesman probably won't do much for you. Classifieds are a good place to check, too, if you live near a big city. As for learning, again, I would urge you to take beginning lessons from an actual person at first. They can point you in the right direction, and steer you away from bad habits. My best advice for beginners is to play every single day. Two twenty minute sessions per day is good, more if you are inspired (and your fingers are not too sore!) Go for it, there is no greater joy.... (1) Start with a cheap guitar. See to what degree you really want to play before you go and purchase an expensive instrument. The $75-$90 guitars are just about as good as the $175 guitars so save the money. The cheaper instruments have strings that are a little farther off the fingerboard and that is GOOD for learning. (2) The next price up from the cheap guitars are those over $225. ie you need to go that high before you get an appreciatively better instrument. From that level the next is $750. Above that is the $1500 and up. I say this because the two reasons prices are in between those prices is because of "name recognition" [not so important with so many well made but unknown brands] and design frills like mother of pearl inlay. It isnt a better guitar just because it has a pretty design. (3) You must practice daily and do so for at least 6 months before you will begin to feel better and actually sound better. In other words you can go a long time before you really get to the next level. So keep going and all of a sudden you are "better". Guitar learning is a plateau experience.(4) It helpsd if you can sing. (5) Practicing scales will improve your ability over time ( a long time) but not as much as having someone show you some specific techniques so try out a few teachers and avoid any teacher who bogs you down in (a) jazz or jazz chords (b) broadway show tunes or old standards (c) scales. These seem to be the places where hack teachers drag their unwitting students which leads to boredom and ultimately quitting in disenchantment. The best advice I can give you is have someone show you how to play the songs YOU like. Many popular songs are easy to play once someone shows you how to do it. Nothing breeds interest in the guitar like being able to play a song or three that you like. The last bit of advice is that the best kept secret in guitar learning is to do the following: Get a playback system like a 4 track recorder. Hook a mike into the recorder and hook a tape deck or cd player into the recorder. You now have a record playback system that can play any record or cd you like into a mechanism that allows you to play "along with" the music. You can play your guitar (acoustic with a mic or electric directly into the machine) right along with the music as it plays. The bonus benefit is that only you will be able to hear the music so you wont bother anyone even if you are in a small apartment. You can play heavy metal at 4 in the morning and no one can hear. This enables you to get better very very fast. By the way this is how every real good guitar player got that way. Hope this helps. Email if you want any more advice. marcel deste ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Feb 1999 18:36:36 EST From: RMuRocks@aol.com Subject: Re: First Time/Worst Time (NJC) In a message dated 2/20/99 12:26:52 AM Central Standard Time, tncturley@worldnet.att.net writes: << everyone had to recount not only the first concert they went to, but the worst, and why. The singer Morrisey challenged Joni's eating of meat by asking her if she would eat her cats. She said she wouldn't because that would be cannibalism. > Reflecting on this situation, I wondered if anyone is aware of > Joni's attitude towards animals? If Joni supposedly thinks so highly of Carly, then how could >she make such a scornful and dismissive remark about her? Well, it's either Joni being her brutally honest self or maybe she was taken out of context. Comparing them is like apples and oranges, afterall. Joni had made some awful remarks about her old friend Crosby, repeatedly calling him a "tailgater". Crosby calls her the love of his life yet also says she has the "ego of Mussolini". We also asked Robbie C. about the incident with Chrissie Hynde jumping and choking Carly at the Joni concert at The Fez in New York a few years back. He was there and said it was really dreadful at the time, but everything worked out in the end. A guy I work with is from Chrissie's native Ohio and adores her. When I told him about the incident, he thought it was the best thing he ever heard and thoroughly enjoyed it!
