Subject: John Kelly/JMDL Entrance
Someone posted asking about John's performances opening for Natalie
Merchant. Although I didn't catch any of them, I'm on the Natalie list
and reviews were posted, but they usually with only minimal information
on John. Iguess that when he opened for Natalie in Las Vegas, he got
LOTS of bickering and rude remarks from the crowd... even booing. I'm
sure that was for his appearance and not the music though. I've heard
that the performances in California went much better though and that he
did get the crowd going with "Big Yellow Taxi". The problem is that
Natalie kept introducing him as Joni Mitchell.. an often times much of
the crowd didn't figure it out until several songs into his set. Can
you imagine? Natalie was saying stuff like 'Well, it took a lot of
work, but we've got Joni Mitchell here to warm you guys up!" I think
that was a mistake because even the people who knew John Kelly was going
to be opening were confused. Natalie shouldn't have sounded so
convincing...
May I just add that I think the comment made about a JMDL entrance exam
was pretty rude. God forbid that listmembers take time out of the
all-important Teletubbies discussion to answer a Joni-related question.
Many of us have been fans for years and never known what SIQUOMB stands
for... I'm just glad I didn't ask and be practically laughed off the
list. I'd say that when the conversation drifts so far over to the NJC
side, any Joni question is a good question. Not all of us have time to
read the entire Joni biography but do enjoy her music and the
conversation found here.

The point I was trying to make is that if you read the info on the web pages,
you'll find it easily. The "exam" would merely be a clever way to use links to
show new people that the answers to MOST of their questions can be found in
the information already provided.
It is not an attempt to embarrass new people or disqualify those who are only
casual Joni fans.

I'm not saying that idea was necessarily a bad one. It sounds fun. The
way it was directed was kind of rude. You, Paul, said something to the
effect of "So we don't have to answer a question like this at least once
a month..." I'm sure nothing was intended by it, but this group of
people can and sometimes does snub others, especially new listers. When
someone can go on for pages about sexual orientation and religion, I'm
sure a few lines dedicated to the definition of SIQUOMB wouldn't hurt.
And the web pages take a lot of time to look through because they're so
nicely done. Sometimes people just want a direct answer as soon as they
can get it. Usually, a discussion list for the artist wouldn't be a bad
place to ask a question pertaining to a rather odd term coined by that
artist. This list doesn't seem to think that these questions are deep
enough, but we say we want more Joni fans and by initiating something
like a Joni-test, we're only alienating would-be fans.

For those who love Shana, Van or just good music, here are the details for
Shana's concerts this weekend:
Saturday, Feb. 13th - McCabe's Guitar Shop, 3101 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica,
CA
Show starts at 8:00 p.m. - $12.50 (310) 828-4497
And even better......
Sunday, Feb. 14th - Muldoon's Restaurant, 202 Newport Center Drvive, Newport
Beach, CA
Show starts at 2:00 p.m. but they recommend getting there at 1:00 p.m. It's
FREE, plus you can have a martini instead of the tea and cookies only
offered at McCabe's ;-)
Mr. Dulson and I plan to be there early Sunday if anyone else plans to
venture over for it. Mr. D also recently passed on an article to me
featuring Shana - she and her band Caledonia have recently released their
debut CD on Belfast Violet Records.

I've wonderd that myself, Greg. S & L is my fav Joni work since I first
heard it back in 1980. The video is even more amazing, paving the way for
all the best music videos to follow. Coyote is priceless!
S & L turned me on to Pat Metheny. I immediately went out and got
American Garage. To this day Pat remains my second-favorite guitarist.
Imaginary Day is his finest work since First Circle. I blast The Heat Of The
Day and The Roots Of Coincidence all the time.
What Pat contributed to In France They Kiss On Main Street, Amelia, and
Furry Sings The Blues is not fully appreciated. And how Lyle Mays (and The
Persuasions) transformed the boring title-track into a gospel masterpiece
makes me wish she'd hook up with these guys again!
What an awesome band....

On the NPR show; Fresh Air, today, Dawn Upshaw, the great soprano of the
Met and other great Operas, told Terry Gross that her inspirations for
singing were 1. Joni Mitchell, 2. Aretha Franklin.
Having had the opportunity to hear Ms. Upshaw live on a couple
occasions, I was delighted to hear her honor JM. Ms. Upshaw also sings
a variety of styles and is wonderful at all them.
Thanks all for the warm welcomes last week. I have been suffering from
a male-related physical discomfort and haven't been able to sit at my
computer. *Not my boyriend!!*
Love to all and more later.

I had to check.... at first I thought; huh? shooting up? yeah, right...
but the more I look at it the more I'm NOT sure... what do the rest of
you think?
I've attached a scan of the felt tip drawing in question.

I think the best response from the list to that question is to encourage you
to check out the website. It really isn't that much to read the bio, but I
guess an FAQ "quiz" is still the best way.

Luke,
You don't know me yet. I've been busier on my baseball list and haven't posted
much on the JMDL lately, but I've been reading most of the posts.
I'm not rude; I'm direct.
When Prof. Henry Higgins is accused of being cold to Liza Doolittle, he
replies, "The question isn't whether I treat you badly, but whether you've
seen me treat anyone else better."
LOL
